All Things Denver XXXIII

Re: All Things Denver XXXIII

I've always wondered, if the Coach consults or even calls the parents in these situations, before handing out these types of suspensions. Interesting that they are allowed to practice but not play. You have to wonder, come parents weekend, if the other parent's are giving these Moms & Dads the google eyes. Probably not; boys will be boys - and I'm sure they learn their lessons - especially when it happens to top tier, drafted kids.

Re: All Things Denver XXXIII

I don't have time to read the whole thread, but is there a reason for Denver to be so short of players, or did they do it to guarantee ice time?

4 goalies with 2 getting full scholarships with the 3rd probably getting something this season. Most players at DU are getting full or partial scholarships due to the high cost of the school. Wade Bennett had to retire from hockey before training camp due to injuries. Dan Olzsiewski was suspended indefinitely last last season and is not on the team anymore. Both were non-scholie players as far as I know. Lost 3 underclassmen forwards to pros. That is five players that could have been here this season. Almost all of the recruits that are coming in next season are still in high school so no one could come in early. This year's players will not be complaining about playing time. Team has 20 skaters and 4 goalies. Down to 18 skaters and 3 goalies to start the season.

thanks,

The last time we ran that lean, we got burned by injuries and then the WJ's took 3 or 4 players. WE already lost two players this year, nothing like a season ending knee injury at the team party to start the year off. the other player that got hurt was the walk on practice goalie, and we have found another of those in the general student population.

Fingers crossed the injury bug doesn't bite quite as hard this season. Of the three who left early, the most frustrating to me is Beau. Kid didn't even get a chance to give us a sophomore year.

Re: All Things Denver XXXIII

Oh my, but it's good to see that picture again. :D

Edit: It looks like someone different is doing play-by-play. No flying solo tonight?
Mitch Hyder did the PBP for the exhibition game last year too.

Re: All Things Denver XXXIII

DU ties tonight. Good to see college hockey start in the state of CO. Now, it's time to get the season going!

A decent crowd, more than I expected.

Not sure who the **** he was, but there was a self-proclaimed "big time DU fan" sitting behind me who kept yelping some crap about how good "Sammy Mayfield" is and that "Tony Looney" is really good as well.

But, yeah,...HOCKEY SEASON!!!

It was interesting seeing 3 d-men on a PP...with Zajac serving as a forward. Maybe we see Zajac shifting up as a forward for now? Though Nick Shore also double shifted as the 4th center sometimes tonight...

Re: All Things Denver XXXIII

Gwoz in post-game said he rolled 4 lines all night and only shortened the bench in the OT. Expects Tabrum back in a few days and he should be ready for the opener. Matt will center the 4th line. Last night the 3 centers rotated centering the 4th line in his absence. DU needs to finish better around the net. Outshot UBC 47-29 but only tallied 2 goals. The UBC goalie did make some good saves and was probably their best player.

Following the lead of Peter King of SI, I give you:

Things I Think I Know

  1. Exhibition games just aren't as exciting as the real thing.
  2. Jay Stickney and Mark Rycroft add flavor to PioVision and the game experience.
  3. The top line is Ty Loney-Nick Shore-Chris Knowlton
  4. I think the top defensive pairing is Paul Phillips and David Makowski.
  5. Scott Mayfield will apply BIG Hits, but needs to stay out of the penalty box.
  6. The least touted freshman, Garrett Allen, was the first frosh to score a goal. Keep scoring Garrett!
  7. Jarrod "Unleash" Mermis and Grant Arnold were on the 4th line at least for last night.
  8. Nick Shore had a LOT of ice time.
  9. Happy to see Makowski back on the ice.
  10. To avoid confusion, after the 1st period refer to the Shores and Mermises/Mermi by 1st name.
  11. Finally, UBC has had a lot of Olympians and 47,000 students.

Oh yeah, that was me, and I stand by it. Of course, it goes without saying how great Nate Shore and Jimmy LaLeggia are!

Very good list. You know with all that time on his hands from not giving us: the score, the time left, the penalties, the time left, the scoring, the assists, the time of the goals, etc. I was hoping Mitch could run down the list of those UBC medal winners. Especially the bronze medal winners. Unless one of their athletes is somebody well known, like Ben Johnson, then a list of their Olympians falls at or near the top of the "who gives a sh*t list."
