Re: All Things Denver XXXIII

I know, I know!!!! 1986, the sea was angry that day my friends!! We had to get past Cornell to get to the NCAAs in Providence. Joe bleep'n Newendeick (sp?) almost single handedly destroyed us. We just squeaked by them, but came out of it badly bruised. Over 60% of our players were hurt by the time we played Harvard!!

Bad memory. On a more pleasant note was George Morrison scoring his final DU goal, in Dryden's 5-hole, to help the Pios to a NC in the old Broadmoor World Arena. Cheers me up to this very day.

In case you didn't know our very own Old Pio was the runaway winner of USCHO's Fan Forum 2011 Poser of the Year & (by self proclamation) winner of the Rodney King Can't We All Get Along Award.

Old Pio has graciously declined to wear the tiara and sash during his reign:D

Actually, I'm wearing the tiara now. Just not in public. ;)

Re: All Things Denver XXXIII

Lax boys squeaked into the NCAA tourney, they play @UNC on Saturday. Their ECAC semifinal against #1 seed Loyola was a dramatic one, DU trailed by 6 and generally looked terrible heading into the 4th, then out-scored Loyola 7-1 to force OT, only to have a long-stick mid score 6 seconds into the extra stanza to crush DUs hopes of locking up a tourney bid. Somehow they managed to get in anyway, likely on the heals of their blowout win over Duke at Mile High a couple weeks ago.

DU's game against UNC will likely be on ESPNU, time TBD.

It would be fun if DU could mount another run like they did last year. Playing at UNC will be rough, but at least they got the lowest of the seeded teams.

IIRC, in what would have been his senior year at DU he scored 100 points on the Gretzky line. You could make a strong case that Glenn Anderson is the best player we've ever had. What a career. 498 NHL goals! And not a bad freshman year for the Pioneers, either. 26 29 55.

Trottier said GA was fastest player in the league while in control of the puck. The same could have probably been said of Jason Zucker on the college level.

FYI DU Supporters- New DU bookstore management, Follett, is bringing in some nice tees and sweats.

Will any of the items be crimson and gold? I guess Bobby Hull was out of the league by then. Bobby was timed, skating with the puck, at nearly 30mph. If Glenn was in that range, he was truly a rocket.

Re: All Things Denver XXXIII

Found out via reader comments & newspaper confirmation that Van Voorhis & Pham will come to DU in 2013.

That means that things might be very interesting on the recruiting front this summer...

DU graduated 5 players [Goal Czar, Dewhurst, Jackson, Lee & Ryder].

3 players left early [D.Shore, Zucker & Bennett]

6 Freshmen are coming in [Mermis, Allen, Zajac, Q.Shore, Arnold & Levin]

Looks to me like DU has two more forwards to bring in. Either they bring in one or two guys from the 2013 recruiting class [Hawkinson and/or Smith] OR they go shopping for late bloomers in Canada, Europe, NAHL, USHL or find someone to change their commitment [a la Wiercioch/LaLeggia]

Should we be concerned? We have lost some major talent here, more than usual. How good are these guys coming in?

2010--we lost Chevy, Colborne and Weircioch. Just as an aside Hockey Futures reviewed Ottawa's prospects and the telling line--in retrospect Weircioch should have stayed in college for another year. (We Knew that)

Dmann, Ray Piggozi is coming in this year instead of next. Not sure you can expect any recruiting class to come up with the three you mentioned. Of the 3 only Zucker really took off as a freshman. Drew Shore didn't do much as a frosh, but had a huge jump as a soph. Bennett began to get in the groove the last part of his freshman. Somehow I doubt there is a Jason Zucker, rhymes with Booker ;), in the crowd.

Looks like there is room for 1 more and who knows whether Olzewski will be "unsuspended"...which might mean 2.
(He was a WCHA Scholar Athlete so it is doubtful his transgression had anything to do with academics. Rumors, guesses, etc. that it had something to do with "bad behavior" on the Wisconsin trip. As always Gwoz's silence is deafening.)

Does Jussi have any friends who are high scoring forwards? :D
