Re: All Things Denver XXX

Anyone coming from Denver/out of town, beware the outdoor show is the same weekend and parking will be iffy. Get there early.

Re: All Things Denver XXX

Who is this Maggie you speak of? Ha ha. I wish they had some film from his days at DU. Or maybe they do?

Just a boy from Saskatoon. He and his homie, Cliff Koroll, had a pretty good run at DU and then the Hawks. Cliff, who had more than 200 NHL goals, never made first team WCHA or All American. How deep was DU in those days?

Cliff had a tryout with the Denver Bears, and after losing half a dozen balls over the left field wall, they offered him a contract on the spot.

How 'bout this: get the film/video of Maggie together and create an interactive "Magnuson" display at Magness, to go along with his portrait or bust or whatever? And one for Bill Masterton. And, ultimately, one for Matt Carle. It'll never happen, of course, 'cause this is DU we're talking about. But a guy can dream.

note: it's on posts like this that I especially miss Jimbo.

Nice meeting you, Dmann.

Nice meeting you too Pablo and Puck Swami, twas an honor. Bagman, where were you? That was really fun last night. Nice to see the target practice in the third period, that poor goalie actually kept the game closer than it could have been, despite the freak goal. My streak is alive, I hope we get to Manchester this year, maybe I can spread a little good luck to the boys.

Now DU goes on to Nebraska, should be a great series!!

Re: All Things Denver XXX

Let's hope the team recovers next weekend and gets four points
This is going to be a very interesting weekend for DU. UNO considers us to be one of their biggest rivals and we've never played a conference game against them yet. I would doubt that 5% of our players or fans would know what their school nickname is.

UNO is having a magical season and they are going to be pumped up this weekend.

UNO is an enigma. 0-3-1 against Bemidji, swept by Quinnipiac, sweeps against Sconnie & Minnesota and split four games with North Dakota.

DU blew the MacNaughton last weekend, but control their own destiny for 2nd place. Time to seize the moment.

It is amazing to me how well this UNO team has done this year in the WCHA. I figured they would be about where Bemidji is now. I assume they were pretty good in the CCHA last year and I guess their coach has a very good reputation. Still though, to be just 1 point behind us with all of our blue chip recruits, hard to believe. Is college hockey great or what?

We do? I hadn't heard.

Before I consider you a rival, I would like two questions answered:

1) Why it so dark in your rink? and
2) What is the deal with your amputee-bird logo?

Should be an epic weekend. Welcome to travelers from DU.

Re: All Things Denver XXX

1. It's only dark on TV. When you are there, you can see just fine.

2. The "amputee bird" logo began official "demphasis" in 2006-2007 in anticipation of a new mascot/logo. The school came out with three new wordmarks with "DU" and Denver" in different configurations which have largely replaced the bird in official capacity. The school did not allow Boone the mascot to come back for political correctness reasons in 2008, but did allow student and alumni to use Boone an unnoffical capacity. The unnofficial Boone has basically replaced the bird as well since then.

I believe CO14ers has nicknamed them the "corncows" as "landcows" is already taken.

Re: All Things Denver XXX

UNO originally wanted in the WCHA and DU voted to let them in immediately. But a majority of the schools voted against it, requiring them to wait a while. The Mavericks then joined the CCHA. Omaha's a good hockey town. There were nights when the Mavericks and USHL Lancers both played to sellouts: UNO in an old downtown arena (8,000) and the Lancers in the Ak-Sar-Ben (read it backwards) arena which has since been torn down (7,000). Before UNO went D-1 in Hockey, the Lancers were treated like stars, complete with fashion shows and appearances at big events, with big write ups in the paper and full page ads.

In their first year in D-1 UNO hosted a very bad DU team in a series and won both games. Because of DU's reputation and history, this was a huge jolt for UNO. They, their fans and the whole school were energized by taking down an elite team. I don't know if they can sell out the Qwest center, but if they can, they'll do it this weekend or come pretty close. The Pioneers will need to buckle their chin straps because UNO will come out smoking.

No, but it once happened to Michigan's football team. They were on the road and coach Fielding "Hurryup" Yost (a familiar name) got 'em all fired up to take the field. And they went out through the wrong door and into the pool.

I can unequivocally state that I have NEVER spoken to so much as a single UNO fan that now, or, has ever, that considers Denver to be a rival. I certainly do not, either. We have almost no history between the two schools to make anybody around here feel that way. It'd be like saying I hate brussel sprouts--even though I've never tried them!

UNO has some fluky losses like the two to Quinnipiac and the one to Alabama-Huntsville. It's worth pointing out that we outshot those teams in those three losses 166-77.

UNO leads the nation in shots on goal, and, shots on goal versus shots allowed differential and is the only team in the WCHA besides UMD to have 5 guys with 10 or more goals. We've had games of 60, 59, & 56 shots on goal this season. John Faulkner leads the nation in shutouts with 6 and he's taken a shut-out into the 3rd period 12 times now!

I don't think we're sneaking up on anybody, having been an NCAA bubble team last year and we have a coaching staff that we are very glad to have.

That said, we look like exactly what we are, sometimes, and it's why we are an enigma, as you put it. We have 11 freshmen on this team and 10 of them are getting significant ice time. That is why we've kinda been Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from time to time. I think the kids have tended to play down to the competition, somewhat. We've honestly been at our best all year against the better teams we've played. Just ask North Dakota fan.

FYI, the advance sale for our games with DU is far better for the Saturday night game than the Friday night game. I'd bet there will be as big a walk-up for these two games as any in school history as well. There will be 10,000 plus on Saturday. Not so sure about Friday. The Omaha Boat, Sports, and Travel Show will be going on at the Qwest Center at the same time so there will probably be a lot of double dippers, too, since they are already down there.

Re: All Things Denver XXX

Back in the day of the Big 8/12. Colorado and Nebraska were pretty fierce rivals. There was always a sea of red at Folsom Field. Now I know we are talking to different school, but they are the same states. Other than CC and Air Force, UNO is the most proximate to Denver. And by simple geography and the number of Nebraskans who immigrate to the Denver area, this should be a natural rivalry.

Now when you consider the WCHA standings, this weekend should be the start of something big.

And USCHO and USA Today have Denver at #6 and UNO at #12.

I agree with you. Another "rival" wouldn't hurt at all.

Back in the days of Bill "she must kneel to my will" McCartney, Nebraska was his prime target in the Big 8. Husker fans hated it and pointed out his 1-12-1 record against Big Red wasn't exactly the stuff of epic rivalries. After Neuheisal replaced McCartney, he tried to continue the rivalry. I recall a game in Boulder where he had the team come into the stadium through the stands, with Samoan warriors beating on drums. They took the opening kickoff on one of those 12 play drives that eats up half of the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.

The Huksers put the ball in play on their twenty. Osborne called a variation of the toss sweep they hadn't used all season and Ahman Green went 80 yards to tie the score in one play and about 15 seconds. Talk about sticking a pin in a balloon!

Dmann- Sorry I missed you, I was at the game on Sat, helping sell raffle tickets in the main entrance.

I should think being in the WCHA for the first season, calling DU a rival should be an honor. Geographically, the two schools are not far apart, we are not in traditional hockey states like Minny, Mass etc. (I'm in Denver right now, so I'm talking like I live here), and we're neck and neck in the standings. Why not be rivals?, it adds more to the game. It almost sounds like you are offended to call us that.
