Re: All Things Denver XXX
This is going to be a very interesting weekend for DU. UNO considers us to be one of their biggest rivals and we've never played a conference game against them yet. I would doubt that 5% of our players or fans would know what their school nickname is.
UNO is having a magical season and they are going to be pumped up this weekend.
UNO is an enigma. 0-3-1 against Bemidji, swept by Quinnipiac, sweeps against Sconnie & Minnesota and split four games with North Dakota.
DU blew the MacNaughton last weekend, but control their own destiny for 2nd place. Time to seize the moment.
I can unequivocally state that I have NEVER spoken to so much as a single UNO fan that now, or, has ever, that considers Denver to be a rival. I certainly do not, either. We have almost no history between the two schools to make anybody around here feel that way. It'd be like saying I hate brussel sprouts--even though I've never tried them!
UNO has some fluky losses like the two to Quinnipiac and the one to Alabama-Huntsville. It's worth pointing out that we outshot those teams in those three losses 166-77.
UNO leads the nation in shots on goal, and, shots on goal versus shots allowed differential and is the only team in the WCHA besides UMD to have 5 guys with 10 or more goals. We've had games of 60, 59, & 56 shots on goal this season. John Faulkner leads the nation in shutouts with 6 and he's taken a shut-out into the 3rd period
12 times now!
I don't think we're sneaking up on anybody, having been an NCAA bubble team last year and we have a coaching staff that we are very glad to have.
That said, we look like exactly what we are, sometimes, and it's why we are an enigma, as you put it. We have 11 freshmen on this team and 10 of them are getting
significant ice time. That is why we've kinda been Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from time to time. I think the kids have tended to play down to the competition, somewhat. We've honestly been at our best all year against the better teams we've played. Just ask North Dakota fan.
FYI, the advance sale for our games with DU is far better for the Saturday night game than the Friday night game. I'd bet there will be as big a walk-up for these two games as any in school history as well. There will be 10,000 plus on Saturday. Not so sure about Friday. The Omaha Boat, Sports, and Travel Show will be going on at the Qwest Center at the same time so there will probably be a lot of double dippers, too, since they are already down there.
