All Things Denver, XXVIII

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

I'm happy to hear how well the recovery is going.

But ugh...I can't shake the regret that he has to go through all of this, due to one ill-advised play that was so unnecessary.

Anyway, staying on a positive note: it's touching to hear how his Dad reacted on seeing his first steps after the surgery. Thanks for the updates, everyone.

Despite a slow offensive start to the season, Bozak seems to be a favorite of the Ontario press, he's interviewed regularly on the Leafs site.

Currently he is the top Leafs forward on the draws at 59.3 per cent, good enough for seventh in the NHL. Remembering his days at DU, he had that talent then.

Yeah, Bozak was always strong on the faceoffs. But he and the rest of the Leafs' first line better pick up their scoring pace, or they won't be on the first line for long!

I keep doing this too. If only the puck hadn't dribbled off of his stick, if only he didn't look down at it, if only he didn't glance at that player to his left, if only, if only. Like any horrific accident, I try to look for the silver lining. I'm still looking.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

I just posted this in the Jesse Martin thread, but thought I would post it here as well. I received a copy of the statement made at World Arena after the DU lineup was introduced at the Saturday night game and I thought I would share it with those DU fans who were not at the game (or like me, who missed part of it because of the cheering).
Hockey fans, we’d like to take a quick moment to recognize one student-athlete who is not able to join us for this Gold Pan rivalry game this evening……Denver Senior Forward Jesse Martin is currently in a Minneapolis area hospital recovering from a broken neck sustained last weekend in a game at North Dakota. While his recovery is progressing nicely, he can still use your encouragement and support. So Tiger fans and Pioneer fans…let’s rise as one and cheer at the top of our lungs…..loud enough so Jesse can hear us in Minnesota….with our best wishes for a full and speedy recovery for Denver’s #14 Jesse Martin!

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Thanks, JS. It was very cool of CC and Owens to do that.

I also think Jesse would have been happier if you guys would have called off the dogs with a four or five goal lead, but that's OK. ha ha

ESPN is reporting that DU will leave the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) and join the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). An official announcement is expected today. Hockey, skiing and lacrosse are unaffected by this move. The move is primarily to upgrade the league that men's and women's basketball play in.

Denver Post confirming the story. DU will begin play in the WAC in 2012-13.

Of Denver's 17 teams, 10 will go to the new conference — men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf and tennis, gymnastics, volleyball, women's swimming and women's soccer.

The Pioneers men's swimming team, which was competing in the Sun Belt, will have to find a new conference, most likely the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, because the WAC does not have the sport. DU's men's soccer team and women's lacrosse team now play in the MPSF.

This is a major, major event in the history of DU's sports programs. Having more regionally relevant teams to play is going to help DU both at the gate and on the recruiting trail, and we're also joining a league full of larger public schools that care about having meaningful budgets. This is a major coup for Peg Bradley Doppes and her team, as well as other DU leaders who have been working tirelessly for years in trying to get DU out of the Sun Belt and into a conference where people in Denver have actually heard of the opponents...

Gee i would miss DU versus my alma mater, La Universidad de Norte de Texas, if i cared at all about basketball. That is about as likely as this making a real difference - WAC is second tier and this will buy some regional exposure that might draw a few more fans, players and regional telecasts. I wish i could find my well-reasoned and insiteful post about dumping Men's basketball and putting all those resources into Women's basketball, but sadly that post is imaginary.

I would not be surprised to see DU continue to schedule UNT in future non-league action as the one school in the Sun Belt that DU had some aspects of a rivalry in men's hoops and women's soccer, although I'm not sure that anyone at UNT would be that excited to play DU. Utah State, New Mexico State and Idaho all have large alumni bases in Denver, and if Montana joins the WAC, they'll have that too, so DU hoops crowds will be bigger for sure. Personally, a winter hoops road trip to Hawaii could be fun, and San Antonio and San Marcos are both nice places to visit.

Wacky Day!!

I would like our AD to challange Bosie St to a football game right away. Being the fame seekers they are, BSU will ignore and hide from the challege.
