All Things Denver, XXVIII

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

On a side note I wanted to let everyone know about a crazy series of events that happend last Friday at the game. Two people from the same family got hit in the head by a puck while siting in the same seat right behind me in the 2nd row. The first guy got hit while the players were practicing and the 2nd guy got hit towards the end of the game. I hope all is well with the 2 men that got hit. It looked pretty bad but all head injuries do.

You know, "luck" isn't a word you'd want to use here, knowing how much Jesse has suffered and will suffer physically. And how much he and his family and friends have suffered and will suffer emotionally. But the doctors made it clear that we could have lost him and that he came close to being paralyzed. It frightens me to think of those outcomes. But now that we know what kind of young man Jesse is, I'm confident he'll make the best possible recovery.

I hope the powers that be in college hockey will investigate thorougly here and come up with solutions (equipment, rules, enforcement) that will reduce the liklihood of a recurrance. I don't want to see any more young men grievously injured, with their lives and futures put at risk. And anything that can be done to prevent more of these injuries should be done, immediately.

This incident has affected me and a lot of us profoundly. We almost lost a young man who represents us and it was and is scary. The fact that we were watching on TV when it happened just makes it worse. I'm sure there's a lot of thought about what we can do going forward to honor and recognize Jesse and his sacrifice for us, as there should be. And I'm not just talking about hockey. He needs to complete his DU degree, for sure. And DU should commit itself to seeing that that happens, whatever it takes. And what about the medical expenses here. Is Jesse covered? We should make sure his family isn't burdened by these expenses. And in the short term, if and when he's able to rejoin the team (assuming he wants to) every effort should be made to make that happen. As I say, plenty of other people have undoubtedly thought about these things too.

NCAA Rules, potential lawsuits, medical insurance questions & DU academic policy make answering these questions practically impossible. The phase "uncharted waters" has been used repeatedly in the past week when I've had discussions with people people associated with DU.

Sadly DU students, professors and staff die, commit suicide, get injuried, break bones, commit DUIs and kill people while drunk. And these events have all occured in the past five years. As a University, can DU treat Jesse any differently, just because he happens to play a particular sport that we follow fervently?

So far Jesse has received top-notch care and support. I can't see any reason why that would change upon his return to Denver.

Yes. He didn't commit suicide, wasn't driving drunk, didn't kill anybody while drunk and wasn't engaged in any illegal or anti-social behavior. Uncharted waters, undoubtedly. I understand we live in complicated times, that DU has to consider its legal position here. But that shouldn't stop the university from at least trying to do the right thing. I'm pretty sure I'd feel the same way if this injury happened to a gymnast who hit her head while dismounting from the balance beam or a diver who hit his head on the platform while attempting an inward tuck.

Bump!!! No TV tonight I guess. DU78, do you know of any obscure ways out there to see this game on line? Possibly through the Mavs' site or some other random thing like justintv?

The webcast for both games is on Pioneer Vision at www.denverpioneers.com (fee).

Drew Shore feature article by Mike Chambers in today's Denver Post.

To help answer part of your original question, NCAA athletes have $20 million in coverage with a $75,000 deductible.

The most important news thus far is that Jesse and his family are extremely pleased with the world class medical care he has received.

Good. I'm assuming the Martins aren't on the hook for that deductable. And depending on what the rules are about his scholie, DU should grant a tuition waiver and provide whatever academic services are needed for him to complete his degree--tutors, internet classes, etc. It's the least we can do.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

I would bet that DU not only offers to help him complete his undergraduate degree ( a given), but would probably offer him a chance for a DU graduate degree as well if his hockey career cannot continue. Jesse has given a lot to DU, and I'm am sure that DU will treat him and his family well. That's the way DU operates. Look at what they did for David Carle....

Agreed. Another instance of me having a firm grasp of the obvious.

Don't know if Jesse is on track to graduate early ala Rakh and Ruegs, but he has twice been named to the WCHA All academic team. Maybe I'm an optimist, but I certainly wouldn't be surprised if he was enrolled for the spring quarter. Winter may be a little early....but he is certainly a high character individual.

Top Drawer Facilities:
If an injury of this nature had to occur, having the team at Regions Hospital so close by was certainly a bit of good luck. And then having access to Craig Hospital in Denver--more good fortune.
