All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

CC has lost over 400 season ticket holders and will be cutting ticket prices next year. The Tigers are unique in that the college community is only a fraction of what drives their program - they need people of Colorado Springs to really support them. They still draw very well, but their core audience is not campus-centric...And that means they need to really connect to people who don't have a vested interest in the school.
They need to ramp up their student section, get a band and create a "collegiate" atmosphere. Its a simple formula but it would really work in that marketplace. I'd far rather be selling CC tickets in that marketplace than DU tickets in Denver with all the competition.

Agree 100%. I think CC's mid-90s program resurrection put a lot of heat on DU to upgrade it's hockey product and we're enjoying the benefit of that upgrade now. Perhaps DU's resugence as a more consistent national perfomer in the 2000s will force CC to upgrade it's own game night experience. Having 300 DU fans take over their arena two weeks ago must have opened some eyes down there.

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

bump!!! I noticed that UMD has three snipers, two Connally guys and another really high scoring forward. I assume they don't have much depth and once those guys sit down they will be fighting for their lives. They also have a really good goaltender too I believe.

UMD rocked the Pios up in Duluth and they can play with any team in the country when they feel like it. They have offensive depth that is as good as any WCHA team, and they have a decent defense and decent goaltending. Both UMD and UND are more than capable of taking DU to the woodshed if the Pios don't play well. That said, if DU plays it"s game well, the Pios can be a very difficult opponent for anyone.

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Looks like DU is going to be playing in Albany.

Albany Schedule

Friday 3/26

1st Regional Semi 3:30 PM ET

2nd Regional Semi 6:30 PM ET

Saturday 3/27

Regional Final 7:00 PM ET

Anyone coming this way I am thinking of going up to Albany if DU gets placed there. It is a little over a 3 hour drive from where I live.

The TV timeouts in the WCHA and during the NCAA playoffs are totally designed for a "top heavy" team like Duluth. They can roll that line all night long and either score goals or manufacture penalties.

As they showed last year, when their goaltenders get hot they are a force to be reckoned with.

Should play into DU's hands. No team in the league is more "top heavy" than they are.

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

I don't think Duluth is that top heavy. Yes we have three great goal scorers in Justin Fontaine, Jack Connolly, and Mike Connolly (no relation), but our second and third lines don't exactly feature slouches either. David Grun has picked up his goal scoring down the stretch, and Rob Bordson is probably the most underrated player in the WCHA with 40 points so far this season. The third line will usually grind most other teams down in their own zone giving the first line a breather. As mentioned, TV timeouts will limit the amount of third and fourth line usage.

Our D are young but talented. Drew Olson is extremely fast for his size, and both Brady Lamb and Dylan Olsen have howitzers from the point. Wade Bergman is small for a D, but he has great hands and makes plays with very little space to move. Our D's biggest problem this season has been consistency, many rookie mistakes and miscues have resulted in odd-man rushes. Best consistent D on the team is Montgomery, and he's actually a converted winger.

Goaltending is average but reliable. Kenny Reiter seems to be improving every week since taking over the starting job after sharing the duty with Hjelle for the first half of the season. He did suffer a setback a couple of weeks back when he suffered a hand injury, Hjelle came in and lost a one-goal game followed by a shut out against the Gophers.

I usually hate when fans claim their team "didn't play well/up to their ability/their game" when they lose, only to claim their team is staffed with future NHL all-stars when they win, but this year's Duluth team truly has a Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde personality. If they can keep D mistakes to a minimum, their offense will usually put up enough points to win the game.

Hope we beat the Sioux and get to play Denver on Friday, it looks like its our only chance of making it to the big dance.

All true. Although perhaps we should factor into the equation that DU played them on that teensy, tiny, "smallest ice in the galaxy," that may have made a difference. :D

RIT's ice is smaller at 185x85. And the DECC surface is only 10 feet shorter than an NHL rink, the width is exactly the same. (190x85 vs. 200x85).

Are you suggesting that tUMD has the edge on the NHL ice at the X? :D

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

I was just thinking about how, if DU were to play their max of 6 more games, Rakhshani could -- with some relatively healthy production in these 6 games -- become our first 60 point scorer since the '89-90 season when both Dave Shields (74 pts) and Eric Murano (68 pts) accomplished the feat.

While it ultimately pales in comparison to the obvious team goal of winning #8, it would still be a pretty cool individual achievement...

60 points in today's game is probably the same as 90-100 points in the 80s. The goalies and defenses are that much better since then.

The RnR+C line hasn't been that dominant in the last few games except when Big Joe gets angry. Maybe the other teams will have to devote more energy to the M-O-M (Maiani-Ostrow-Martin) line. They seem to be the hottest as of late.

Ruegsegger does not seem to be himself lately on the ice. Maybe he's playing hurt. He just doesn't look as comfortable out there.

If Big Joe played with a burr under his saddle more often, it would be scary.

True.

Rakh is probably more likely to come in (based on his points per game) at about 57 points. However, sneaking in a few extra points would not be impossible.

Maybe we can bring in a ringer with experience in stalking players (such as tig), to keep Big Joe as angry as possible for the next month. :D ;)

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Earlier today Fox Rocky Mountain Sports announced that the Denver versus Duluth or North Dakota on Friday would be carried LIVE. This is a change from the previous scheduling saying the game would not be aired until 1:00 A.M Saturday morning March 20.

The game will be carried LIVE at 6:07 P.M. Mountain Time this Friday, March 19th.

Great news for DU fans.

They bumped some Rockies preseason programming and ATP Tennis on Friday night to free up some space for DU hockey.

They will televise both games Saturday, but the 3rd place game will be delayed at 10 PM. The WCHA Championship game will be live at 6 PM.

Lots of good Boone coverage this season so you know you can trust their politics. :D

Yeah, but he got robbed twice Friday night against MTU. We'll need all three of those guys in overdrive to win #8, for sure.
