Still some hockey to be played before that decision is made. I'd be thrilled if we can hold the overall number one seed.

No offense to y'all, but I'd love Miami to get it so we have to go to Ft. Wayne.

We'll see.

This was a strange series. Denver played sporadically well over the weekend and got the job done, but there were some serious chunks of uninspired play by the Pios as well, particularly a very bad first period on Saturday.

Now that all the game remaining are either WCHA Final Five Games, or NCAA games, I hope DU can put the kind of effort on the ice to match their talent level.

We also saw a big step for Joe Colborne's development tonight - he went from a good player to a good leader, which is exactly what he needs to do. Joe can be so effective when he's really engaged and emotionally committed, and his team can really get behind him.

When Joe got ticked off in the second and showed how much he cared about Rhett by chasing down the Tech player and hounding and challenging him into the penalty box, I think the whole DU team fed off that emotion and the momentum of the game shifted to DU's favor. The Joe got that Shorty in the final seconds of the second and that was the ballgame.

Well done Joe. It's been such a pleasure watching him blossom at Magness.

Gotta love Otto, I knew him at DU and he definitely was one of the top skiers ever to ski for the school. One of the first guys to go pro as he knew there was some money to be made and not by running a ski school. DU made a great choice in seeking him out to get DU back into the game when they went back to D1. BTW I believe he now sits on the DU Board.

This is a telling quote from Chevy in Chamber's article on the game.

"Sometimes you come out flat, and when you have as much talent as we do, guys don't always remember you have to work hard to succeed," said DU goalie Marc Cheverie, who made 28 saves. "It's just the way it goes, and as a goalie, you always have to be ready for those times."

One other observation. There have been a couple others who have really matured as well in the second half. Knowlten, Shore, Donovan and Lee. Lee has stepped up in Chris's absence and really solidified his D play. The fact that the third and fourth lines produced in the last third of the season is a big part of reason this team is a solid number one in the PWR. What's the word on Chris N? We need him back for these single elimination games.

One last point. HP has been making the point that Gwoz should make Patrick W a forward. His mistakes last night confirmed that again. If he does that kind of crap in the single elimination games he could blow it for the whole team. As Gwoz said last night, not even a superior goalie like Chevy can save you from a mistake like that.

Who's hot, who's not? Who's a pretender, who's a contender?

In order of their standing among the current top 16 teams in the PWR before games resume later today, here are the records of all 16 teams since January 1, 2010. [UAH and any AHA team are not included]. I apologize if I've miscounted a team's W-L-T record. This chart is meant to give fans a quick view as to who's on a roll as the playoffs continue and who is struggling. Each of the teams listed has played roughly twenty games since 1/1/10.

1. Denver 16-2-2
2. Miami 12-4-2
3. Wisconsin 13-4-2
4. B.C. 13-7-1
5. NoDak 12-6-2
6. St. Cloud 13-5-2
7. Bemidji 10-5-3
8. Yale 13-5-1
9. Ferris 8-8-4
10. Cornell 12-4-2
11. UNH 9-6-4
12. NMU 12-3-4
13. Alaska 9-6-5
14. Vermont 8-7-5
15. Lowell 9-9-3
16. Duluth 10-10-0

Interesting observations. This DU team has the talent to go all the way, but I think most Pioneer fans are still scratching their heads on this team's tendency to drift into long stretches of uninspired play. In a one-and-done situations, those kind of stretches can (and will) get you bounced from a tourney. Gwoz knows it and the team knows it. The question becomes how to sustain intensity. We now enter the stage of the playoffs where there are no bad opponents. Every team the Pioneers face now is a quality opponent - which means that DU will need to play with more consistent intensity. Can they do it? Certainly, the Pios have beaten some quality opponents this year to get where they are, so the capacity is there, but is the willpower there?

As I see it, there are up to six games remaining, which breaks down into 18 periods, and 36 ten minute segments. DU should be focusing on maintaining intensity in those 10 minute increments, and by winning short term battles, they add up to winning games. Moving feet, winning battles for loose pucks, finishing checks, blocking shots, and being smart are the hallmarks of intense team, and those things need to come from within. The seniors need to lead, but others need to display their commitment...

I thought Colborne's fit of anger at MTU last night was a big step for him and for the team. You could see the intensity ratchet upwards in that second period, and DU was very good when they were angry. This team has to be a little more nasty at times, without being stupid.

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

With UND beating MN tonight , DU will be playing the Friday night game at the Final Five. They will face the winner of the Thursday play-in game. UMD will be one of the teams in the play-in game and either MSUM or UND will be the other pending the outcome of the SCSU/MSUM game which is going into OT.

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

SCSU wins, Denver plays winner of UMD/UND on Friday night.

CC is done again for the season :) Can't wait to see the match ups for next weekend. I assume we will know nothing about the NCAAs until next weekend is completed, correct? I saw some post about us playing UAH, is that because we are the #1 seed and they are #16? Again, don't we need to know the outcome of next weekends series before that's determined?

Just looked like a good, hard hit in the corner to me. I mean, I won't mind if he gets a game for it, but ...
