Re: All Things Denver XXIX

From the INCH chat on Friday.
Is DU a dark horse to win it all this year?

Mike Eidelbes (2:33 PM)

Can a top-five team really be a dark horse? It's scary to think that this Denver team -- assuming it can keep all the high-end talent from turning pro -- is probably a year or two from reaching its ceiling. Sure, they could win it all, but I think the first period of last Friday's game at Colorado College might be one reason they won't; that's as big of a regular-season game as those kids will play, and they weren't mentally prepared at all and got blitzed early.

Our young team still has to work on playing the whole game.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

The Avs 5-3 loss tonight is the perfect ending to a crappy hockey day. Time for bed.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

All is not bad. UMD only got 1 point this weekend and DU is all alone in 2nd place in the WCHA with 31 points, 1 behind UND with MTU looming this coming weekend. On the other hand they are only 1 point ahead of UMD and UNO who swept Wisconsin this past weekend.

DU remains a #1 seed in PWR as they are tied for 4th with Merrimack and hold the statistical edge.

Jason Zucker leads the WCHA in points with 29 and the goal scoring race with 18.

More importantly DU has MTU coming to town, This is a MUST sweep weekend.

The Pioneers got the road split this weekend and that's a good result in this league.

Minnesota was scrapping for it's playoff life, and the Gophers outplayed the Pioneers for most of the weekend - DU had won 5 in a row in Mariucci coming into last night and that streak wasn't going to last forever.

The Pioneers have a great opportunity to get back to winning next weekend against MTU.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

I feel really uneasy after this weekend. I know a split on the road is awesome, but man did we get outplayed (granted, I haven't seen the 3rd period from last night, but I a little worried. We need Kyle back!!!!

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

Sorry for the back to back posts, but in honor of my 2000th post, I will now make my announcement so many have been waiting for. Yes, the rumors are true, I am coming to Denver and will be at Magness for the Mich Tech game Saturday night! clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap. Now you guys really don't have to make a fuss, please no parades this time, no banners, no between period tribute, really!! FWIW, I have not seen DU lose in person since DG and I saw them lose in Maine in 2005. And for some reason, I always seem to catch the Tech series (Minny last year as well). So I am counting on being a good luck charm this coming weekend and am hoping to see a bunch of you guys at the regular corner, coincidentally near the beer. There are still of bunch of guys I haven't met yet: Pablo, Magness Man, Puck Swami to name a few, I hope to meet you guys this time. DG, will you be in attendance? I'm really looking forward to this, I know Tech has a terrible record, but you never know. Isn't their top scorer, Olson, hurt? I hope he's back for this series, I want to beat them at full strength!! See you guys there and remember, no parades, it's embarrassing!!!! seriously!!!

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

Dmann- looking forward to seeing you this weekend. Saturday's debacle aside, Minny was great fun.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

Dmann--I hope to meet you Mich. Tech weekend.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to give a shout out to John Ryder--he played an amazing game on Friday night. Cleaning the clock of several Gophers, without going to the box. Although many Pioneers hustle and play hard, Ryder is our main physical presence out there, and the only guy that makes the other teams keep their heads up. John Ryder--you are a man of action, and I salute you. Well done.

I don't know what happened on Saturday night. I would prefer to forget this game, and move on. I hope some lessons were learned, much like after the shellacking by CC.

Thanks Pablo, I'll be in the corner hangin' with my old classmate Bagman. I will most likely have a large cold beer in my hand! As for Ryder, so true, so true. I was thinking of putting a question out to you all as to who is the most feared defenseman on our team, Ryder or Nutini?

It has to be Ryder. From my limited perspective, he doesn't talk too much trash, rarely does anything chippy, and rarely takes a dumb penalty. But if a DU player has laid out an opponent with a big hit, it's a safe bet that Ryder was involved.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

The lessons are the same every year. If you don't have the better jump or the higher compete level in this league, you'll often get a bad result. Sometimes, DU can win on superior talent or a hot goalie, but when the other team is winning the battles for loose pucks, or DU isn't moving their feet in all three zones, the chances to win drop dramatically.

At this point, I think Gwoz should coach the remainder of the games at a playoff intensity. If guys don't want to give their best to compete, let 'em sit untill they do.

This Tech series won't be easy. DU will rotating 5 d-men without Makowski on Friday, and without Ostrow, the team lacks leadership and his production. Time to unleash the Mermis once again...

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

Prior to tonight's Beanpot, DU is 4th in PWR. It will be interesting to see where everyone is after tonight. Also DU is rolling 4's right now. They are 4th in both the USCHO Poll and the USA Today Poll.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

Bozak back with Kessel in Toronto and newcomer Joffrey Lupul is on the other wing. Kris Versteeg was just traded by the Leafs to the Flyers for 1st and 3rd round picks. I would expect Leafs GM Brian Burke to continue with some trades prior to the deadline as the Leafs are out of it.
