Re: All Things Denver XXIX

When does your flight arrive on Saturday DMann? Will you be in town in time to grab a bit to eat before the game?

I was planning on meeting up with some non posters at Chipotle and walking over. There is a huge void of Mexican food in Maine, go figure!!

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

Bump! co14ers, do you guys still eat at Spanky's, or did something happen there? If so I could swing by for a beer after the Barbacoa and Marg fest!

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

The lessons are the same every year. If you don't have the better jump or the higher compete level in this league, you'll often get a bad result. Sometimes, DU can win on superior talent or a hot goalie, but when the other team is winning the battles for loose pucks, or DU isn't moving their feet in all three zones, the chances to win drop dramatically.

At this point, I think Gwoz should coach the remainder of the games at a playoff intensity. If guys don't want to give their best to compete, let 'em sit untill they do.

This Tech series won't be easy. DU will rotating 5 d-men without Makowski on Friday, and without Ostrow, the team lacks leadership and his production. Time to unleash the Mermis once again...

Gwoz agreed with you, Swami. Stated success sometimes mask the errors that were being made. "Little things", urgency, finishing checks, defensive lapses. Gwoz downplayed injuries, but Ostrow's surgery and the its timing had to be unsettling to the team.

Seems to me DU has played frenetically in the past couple of weeks, but not necessarily smart. Jackson and Nutini and ?? really need to step as team leaders.

Adam Wodon sees the Pios as a 5-6 team or an NCAA #2 seed when all is said and done in March:

Interesting how those two losses DU has to BC early in the year are pushing Merrimack past them. While they may be hurting DU in the PWR a bit, those losses certainly showed a young DU team how a championship team plays and had a pretty positive effect on DU from then on. Whether DU is a #1 or #2 seed really doesn't make all that much of a difference to me. If Merrimack is #4 and DU is #5 and end up in the same regional, I'll take it. DU has to fly no matter what regional they are in so it doesn't make much difference where they play. I am glad we are talking about whether we will be a #1 or #2 seed rather than will we make the NCAAs.

Merrimack?!? That's a big surprise. Anybody have them in the top 10 when the year began?

Unbelievable turnaround!!! They won't last, once they get to the NCAAs they're gonna collapse like a tent! On another note, are you all follwing the "Greatest teams ever 1-58?" Very interesting, though we do have a Minny fan trying to start something with us... say no more!!!

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

#1 seed means very little to me. I'd actually prefer a #2 seed, as the #1 seeds haven't worked out so well for us lately. The #4 seeds frequently are an unfamiliar wildcard that you fall into the trap of underrating. Plus, if we aren't able to beat a #3 seed in the first round, then it's not our year for greatness, anyway.

A good work ethic, minimal injuries, and Brittain in the groove will mean much more to me than a #1 seed.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

As long as DU can get into the NCAAs, I'd consider this season a success. Win a game or two in the NCAAs and it's a big success. A Frozen Four appearance or anything beyond that would be a monumental success. Remember that DU was predicted for a fourth place finish in the league, which DU should exceed given the remaining schedule, and that's a very positive season considereing the all the top players who graduated and left DU early for the pros.

The big now concerns are getting healthy, playing harder/smarter hockey and getting Sam to heat up in the final weeks. DU can go far if those things happen...

Actually there's a method to your madness. #4 seeds usually are teams that come into the tournament on a roll having done well in their conference Tourneys. They have moved up in the last day or two in the rankings displacing teams that were eliminated early in their conference tourneys.

In other DU sports news, one of the posters on the Sun Belt board reports on conference men's basketball attendance, and DU hoop attendance is up about 50% at home this year over to just over 3,000 fans per game. It still has a long way to go, but 3,000 is much better than 1,500 a few years ago.

Once DU gets to about 4,000 fans per game or so, the program breaks even financially.
