All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

This has been quite a season. We have never yet seen the team that I expected coming into the season. First we saw the offensive juggernat that frankly shocked all of us, but without the defense that I think most of us thought that we would see. Then the offense went down around where we kind of expected to see it, but the defense stayed bad. The season is still salvageable, but I have to say, I don't have a lot of hope.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Well, another disappointing weekend to be sure.

On the bright side - We're only a point out of first in the WCHA & we still control our own destiny. If the lads can pull it together over the break, we could still be a team to be reckoned with.

No one expected the offensive monster this team was in the first nine games. If that monster wakes up again in the second half & we can play a little better defensively, watch out.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

So, as luck would have it I get to travel to Woodbury, MN here in January. I am planning on going to the MN vs NDame game on the 8th.
If anyone has any suggestions on where to pre-game and/or peeps to hook up with let me know!
thanks!!

This has been an interesting season for a Pioneers/Chicago Bears fan. They seem to be having the same season. :(

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Pios are #14 in USCHO Poll.
After Saturday, a surprisingly good ranking.

In the all important PWR DU is #16, right now on the outside looking in. While it is still early in the PWR, DU has their work cut out for them with a very challenging second half schedule. Right out of the gate we have BU in the Hall of Fame game followed by 2 with Cornell. Luckily all those games are at home and finish the non-conference schedule. For the first time in many years, DU will have a full team for these two post-Christmas games as no one will be at the WJC. Need to have a good showing in those three games as they will be very important in the PWR. Denver finishes up the schedule with 7 WCHA series with 3 at home, 3 away and a split series with CC. Except for UAA, the other 6 teams are all vying for home ice advantage in the WCHA playoffs.

That's some tough sledding. I think that at this point, we can say that, if DU goes to the NCAAs, they will have earned it.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Gwoz held his last press conference of 2012 today. Team needs the rest they are getting now to refresh themselves both physically and emotionally. He felt some players were trying to do too much in the last month and others are battling some injuries. Everyone should be available to start 2nd half except Coach Lassonde who is helping coach Team USA in the WJC in Russia. Very proud of their performance in the classroom in the Fall Quarter. Three players had perfect 4.0 GPAs, 10 had 3.5 or better and all but 2 had 3.0 or better. He did not name any names of the players but is real happy with their off-ice work in school. Says Jussi is arguably the #1 goalie but didn't commit to him being named the #1. He said with the difficult schedule ahead he will need all three to be ready.

That last line is a little different than what we have been hearing. He has been pretty consistent in a need to get down to the top 2.

Anybody know if the all-time goal-scoring and points leader amongst American-born ice hockey players in the National Hockey League (maybe you REMEMBER THAT league too?) will be doing the ceremonial puck drop inside Magness Arena on the 29th?

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

At least we made the news...

The Fall-alalala of Denver

Don't we know it!
I take issue with this line
DU’s defense – a strong point during their winning streak

I have not seen one single game this year where the defense didn't strike me as a cause for concern. During the winning streak we were getting huge offense and crazy goaltending. But not especially good D.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

University of Denver hockey head coach George Gwozdecky has announced the addition of four student-athletes that will join the Pioneer program for the 2013-14 season. Will Butcher (Sun Prarie, Wis.), Brad Hawkinson (Aurora, Colo.), Trevor Moore (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Matt Van Voorhis (Edina, Minn.) have made commitments to join in time for the 2013-14 campaign.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

I've been wondering when DU would announce the early commits. Butcher and Moore appear to be very highly thought of in the hockey world.
There are still 7 more in the recruiting class for next year to hear from. When is the next time they can sign LOI's?
