Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Grant Arnold nominated for WCHA Rookie of the Week. Not only got his first goal, but must have impressed with all around play. Congrats to him.
Knowlton and Jussi also nominated. Wonder if Jussi had played both nights...
Not surprisingly UND's Rocco and Rowney got the honors.

Does anyone know if the USA Hockey HOF Inductees will again attend a dinner at Magness when the Terriers are here? We went to the one with Cami Granato and Brett Hull last time - and it was really great. Worth every penny. I haven't seen any information about this year's...... thanks.

Dinner was in October in Dallas when the induction ceremony was held. DU couldn't host the game in October due to the Presidential debate.

From DU Game Notes for this weekend

OUT OF ACTION
Josiah Didier (injury) and Larkin Jacobson
(team suspension) are questionable for this
weekend’s series at Bemidji State.

I infer that means we'll be releasing the Mermis (major) on the unsuspecting Beavers. And the longer we go without seeing or hearing anything about Jacobson (Chris reported on his ominous status last week) the more it begins to seem inevitable we'll be having an announcement about him making "other arrangements."

Tom May was suspended for half a season and came back to play after Christmas in his Junior season [2006-07]. And it was a similar situation to this, nothing was ever announced.

Of course Jacobson didn't record a point last season, so DU may not have as much invested in him like they did with Tom May.

I wish our security services had the same dedication to secrecy as the Pioneers do. More than once, on between period interviews, we've heard players refer to "upper body injuries," as if any young dude anywhere ever talks like that. We still don't know what the deal was with Lukas Dora (I don't even recall rumors). Perhaps Gwoz will let us know when he writes his memoirs (I wouldn't bet on it). And I'd imagine the Jacobson situation will similarly remain a deep, dark secret. I'm not complaining, exactly. But. . . . .

Chambers with some DU updates today.

Flying Finn will play goal Friday and could play Saturday.

Viva Larraza is good to go.

Q Shore says he has no intention of leaving DU and doesn't know where rumor started he was going to WHL.

Larkin Jacobson will come off suspension after Christmas and could play against BU. Josiah Didier should be ready to return against BU.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

This past Tuesday night on ESPN radio, It was rather reassuring to hear Coach Gwozdecky more or less admit that in order to score on a power play, you need to send pucks to the net; and either have the goalkeeper or another skater block that shot; or have the shot go into the goal crease and cross the goal line. Those weren't his exact words - but you get the point. I think they're realizing that you can't score a goal when all you do is play hot potato up on top of the circles and go tape to tape, simply passing the puck between 3 players, looking for that perfect shot. It's nearly impossible for this team to score that way. You've got to, Got to, got to, GOT TO make shots on goal! Shoot. The. Puck.

I must also add this is a truism for the whole game.:D

Once again, Old Pio takes advantage of the suffering of Pioneer fans to offer an only slightly on point annecdote. As I've mentioned before, the Blackhawks used to wheel Bobby Hull out to the left point on powerplay like a d*mn howitzer. They'd lag it over to him and he'd trigger a 120mph slapper. Sometimes it went in. Sometimes a guy lost his life going down to block it. Frequently there'd be a rebound. Ultimately if they didn't score, the Hawks would send it back to the left point and the whole lethal thing would be repeated.

And to add insult to injury Old Pio throws in some video of an ancient game between the Hawks and Leafs. Bobby has a hattie. Two of 'em coming on those mind boggling slappers. Please note if you watch, and I think it's worth your time, you'll notice the crowd in the Garden ooohing and ahhing at Hull's shots.

Wonderful footage. Imagine being in goal moving your unprotected face around screens so you can see those howitzers coming in at you. Talk about cajones! Or maybe it's called dementia pugilistica.

I love that when the guys score, they just skate to the face-off circle, and get ready for the face off. They act like they've done it before.

So... Let's get a win tonight! Preferably, an authoritative one.

Sport once asked a panel of top goalies about playing against Hull. When asked if he'd ever frightened them, one guy recalled the time Bobby took an uncreened slapper from the blue line. The guy said he brought his glove up to make the save---at it hit him in the back of the glove! It had gone in and was coming out. The guy said if it were up to him he would have headed back to the locker room for a Molson's. For years, the Black Hawks claimed Hull lost several goals a season just that way, in and out so quickly nobody saw it. Gump Worsely once took a Hull slapper off the forehead. And he said the only reason it didn't kill him was that the puck had turned over and hit him flat. If it had struck him edge on, Gumper was convinced he was a goner. The banana blades of the day caused the puck to behave like a knuckle ball. So this thing's coming at your exposed face at 120mph and dipping and diving. Pass.

If you check the comments on You Tube, one genius says he didn't think the Leafs goalie was all that good because Hull scored on unscreened slappers. Uh, the guy scored hundreds of goals on slappers, screened and unscreened.

All goalies I have known have been a little "different," but those old timers had to have been certified crazies. Guys like Gumper and Glenn Hall and Cesare Maniago were famous in their universe, but there must have been something burning awfully bright in them to make them want to do that. It's also true that players kept their sticks down then, and they probably tended to keep shots lower too, especially since goalies were stand-up, not butterfly. But still . . .

IIRC, Jacques Plante was considered a "p*ssy" for wearing a mask. I grew up watching Hall in the Stadium. They used to announce him: "In goal. Number 1, Mr. Goalie, Glenn Hall." And he d*mn sure was, IMO. When he left the Hawks and helped St. Louis get into the Cup finals, St. Louis lost every game, but Hall was named MVP of the series. Possibly because he gave up a handful of goals in those four losses. He was the reason those games weren't blowouts.

He has that NHL record for consecutive starts, it's over 500 games! Think of a modern goalie starting more than 500 consecutive games. H*ll, in those days, they didn't even carry a backup. If your guy couldn't go you'd throw in the equipment man or hire somebody from the unemployment office.
