All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

IMHO, I'd say we've become too concerned with scoring goals and as a result are not playing the quality defensive game we were projected to have. Too much action in front of Sam tonight that should have been cleared.

We just have to work harder on protecting our net.
Agreed completely. I have been quite concerned with the defense. They have relied much too much on goaltending, and in games where the goalie only played well instead of great, the other teams has scored several goals.

Would that be the same Hockey Least and ECAC that are currently holding down 6 of the top 7 PWR spots (7 of 8 if you count soon to be HE member ND)?

As for DU, I think my point was proven this weekend. It's one thing to beat a bunch of unranked teams, another to beat teams in the top 10, which DU was unable to do on two occasions this weekend at home. To be honest, not even sure if they belong in the top 10 anymore - certainly not the top 5...
There you go! That's how you talk smack! For future reference, just be like this! Don't do this namby-pamby 'well maybe you guys might have been the beneficiary of a weak schedule or something.' Just say what you think. Declare yourself. Then eat the crow if you're wrong. My opinion of you just went up tenfold.

And this is where I would eat the crow, if I had said that DU would win this weekend, as opposed to just pointing out that polls are stupid and PWR meaningless this early. However, I have had serious reservations about the D all season, and this weekend showed exactly why. DU scored 2 relatively soft goals on a guy who, by all accounts, seems to be one of the top goalies in the country, and they couldn't take advantage. Against CC, the UNH fans mentioned in the game thread that allowing 2 goals in a game has been unusual, so I think DU and CC can be proud of hanging 4 each on them. But DU got real complacent, and a good team made them pay.

As for UNH fans, you might consider the fact that you have given up more than one goal in relatively few games, then allowed four in consecutive games as a cause for some concern. And Hockey East fans in general might take that as a sign that out west, we can score some goals.

I wouldn't go that far. He/she doesn't even have the guts to post his/her top 10 so we can see who he/she thinks is so great. Check out the Week 7 Rankings thread for further proof of this.

I think I can post his top ten for him...

1) BC
2) Northeastern (since they beat BC, they are obviously the 2nd best team in the country)
3) Someone else in Hockey East aka the only good conference in the world
4) Someone else in Hockey East aka the only good conference in the world
5) Someone else in Hockey East aka the only good conference in the world
6) Someone else in Hockey East aka the only good conference in the world
7) Someone else in Hockey East aka the only good conference in the world
8) Someone else in Hockey East aka the only good conference in the world
9) Someone else in Hockey East aka the only good conference in the world
10) Someone else in Hockey East aka the only good conference in the world

(1) Maine
(2) Army
(3) Navy
(4) Air Force
(5) Marines
(6) Delta Force
(7) Shattuck St Marys
(8) Bowdoin
(9) UNLV
(10) DU - and that's being generous as they have ZERO quality wins and just lost two at home to boot!

Bwaaaaaaaahahahaaaahahahaaaahahahaha. I take it back. You suck at smack talk. My opinion of you just went back to less than worthless. Now go away, little man. :)

"Hockey Least?" "EZAC?" Wanna-be hockey swamis stereotype the skills and play of whole conferences, not just teams. Recent scores indicate their ouija boards need oiling.

Glendower: "I can call spirits from the vasty deep."

Hotspur: "Why, so can I, or so can any man; But will they come . . .?"

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

To say this was a disappointing weekend is more than an understatement.
  • Sam Brittain had an absolutely forgettable game--average at best--not up to Great Brittain standard.
  • Killer instinct is an unknown for this team. Come out strong, get a lead, then retire. Ooops the other team came back at us, they didn't retire. Didn't you expect them to play the rest of the game?
  • What happened to the dynamic power play? Anemic at best and that's being kind
  • Where was the hard work, team first effort?
  • Those elite defensemen must, at times, play D-Fense.
  • Callow Youth--15 of 24 of the players are freshmen and sophomores. Some of their decisions are less than educated.
  • When opponent has a strong or physical forecheck, the scheme/system falls apart. What is Plan B?

A few good things should be noted:
  1. Juho/Jussi/Juicy Olkinuora played exceptionally well.
  2. Ty Loney re-engaged. Make it a streak Ty, not a one night wonder.
  3. Penalties were down. IMHO this is a good thing with the exception of Scott Mayfield. Not advocating a 5 minute major, but a "gray area," big, nasty hit that gets his blood just south of boiling seems to ramp up his play.

Note to FS23: Yes I am holding you responsible for Friday's loss ;) , but you were correct ND on Friday was North Dakota:)

But North Dakota won on Friday? :p:D:D

Disappointing weekend from the Colorado teams...that will hurt the WCHA when the pairwise matters.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

bump!! This weekend is ripe for a upset. I feel like this is a really important weekend for the Pios. If we take care of business, like we should, we can shake off last weekend and write it off as a fluke. They will regain their confidence and hopefully get on a roll. If they lose to a struggling team, it could send them into a downward spiral and that 9-1 record will seem like a fluke. Oh the humanity!! Somebody say something positive!

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Positives - 1) We're still 9-3, way better position than I & many thought we'd be at this point. 2) We're still on top in the WCHA & yes you trolls that does count for something. 3) I'm writing off Sam's performance on Saturday as a total fluke. He's an outstanding goaltender who just had a bad night. 4) We lost both of those games due to lack of effort & focus, not because the other teams came in and kicked our a**.

We started off playing as a team & were mopping up the ice with the opposition. For some reason, that cohesion came apart this last weekend & we suffered for it. These boys are tough & smart, they'll figure it out & get things on track again.

Say more things like that!!!!

Oh, yeah. Forgot one - we're now only ranked number 5. That does a couple things in my mind - removes a big old target from our backs & maybe humbles our team a bit to provide a little motivation.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

After such a disappointing weekend,it's pretty easy to go all doom and gloom. But the fact it, I don't think we learned anything that we couldn't already see; the defense has not been what we hoped it would be, and when you don't put a good effort into defense, you don't win hockey games against good teams. And while I haven't seen Wisconsin play, it's hard for me to believe that Wisconsin doesn't have something in them. Like others have mentioned, I'm not too concerned about Brittain's play. I am, however, concerned about the number of odd man rushes and breakaways that both Yale and New Hampshire got. And it's not a new problem. DU goalie's seem to have to defend way too many of these.

In any case, this weekend is a good opportunity for DU to come back and get some points and some confidence after a tough pair of losses. Given the way these two teams have played so far, this should be a good weekend.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Did anyone else notice Gwoz got only one question at the Tuesday press conference?

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Assumptions:
  1. Olkinuora and Brittain in goal this weekend.
  2. Murray still out with injury.
  3. Jacobson still suspended.
  4. Kerdiles will begin his career as a badger

Questions:
  • Injury status of Didier
  • Will DU come out flat Friday
  • Will DU get a lead and then fall asleep
  • Will UW's Zengerle play this weekend

DU could potentially only be able to dress 17 skaters and 3 goalies this weekend. Out due to injuries could be Murray, Didier and Jarrod Mermis. Assuming Larkin Jacobson is still suspended that leaves 20 roster players including 3 goalies.
