All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

That was the first game of the season on the road at a notoriously tough place to play, breaking in 3 rookie D-men vs a team that had already played a game. Since then, BC hasn't lost and has beat the #8 and #11 PWR teams. Furthermore, DU has played 8 of their 11 games at home. Not sure what your agenda is, but you cannot compare the two...

Excuses are for Losers (DU fans will like that one).

My point is, calling DU overrated for 1 loss to a quality squad (Top 5 in both PWR and KRACH), is stupid. I'm simply pointing out that using your same arguments, you should also consider BC overrated (and probably everyone in the country at this point).

Personally, I don't think either team is "overrated." However, coming into this thread and looking like a complete a$Shole is a good way for me to want to destroy your argument. Keep in mind that earlier in the week I was actually defending your criticism because I think it is somewhat valid, but certainly not provable by 1 game.

Consider yourself lawyered. ;)

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

So then answer me this one question, do you think DU is the second best team in the country, YES or NO?

We'll see what happens tonight and tomorrow. If they win tonight they likely stay at #2 in my top 10. If BC loses to Dartmouth, I might actually move DU ahead of BC and put them at #1. Would that mean that they are the best team in the country? I would say that question is not answerable at this point in the season (too few games played). However, would that mean that they deserve that spot in the poll at this point in the season? Absolutely.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

So if someone put a gun to your head and asked you who would win on neutral ice, DU vs Nodak, MN, Miami, ND, UNH, BU, etc, you'd pick DU over any of those teams? If not, then you obviously don't believe they're the second best team in the country.

Right now, yes, I would say DU over any of those squads.

North Dakota is too inconsistent right now, and does not play well on Saturdays.
Minnesota has struggled in 5x5 play.
I haven't seen enough of Miami to know too much about them...this would be the trickiest of all of the picks.
Notre Dame struggles against good defensive teams.
We'll find out about New Hampshire tonight, but they tied with CC last night, and DU swept the Tigers last weekend.
BU is a decent team, but probably not nearly as good as anyone else on this list, so I would definitely go with DU.

Fortunately, college hockey is not so serious as to require guns to the head. If it did, we'd all be dead.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

The only reason I'm rubbing it in your face is the fact that I was called out for even - wondering - if DU may be a little overrated due to their soft, home heavy early schedule. You can't ask a legit question these days without someone being offended. To be honest, I had the same concerns about BC until they beat BU and ND recently.
I'm pretty sure no one was offended.

What I took away from other people's responses to you was that no one thought DU was a shoo-in to win these games, but that frankly, there is no team in the country that has played a tough schedule to date AND has no weak losses. So basically, who cares what the polls say, since they are utterly meaningless?

Given that, I'm curious what exactly it is that you believe you're rubbing our noses in. Usually, I think of that when either a) a fan base has been cocky, which we haven't or b) the person doing the rubbing is just a poor sport all around.

Which of these teams do you believe the record shows is clearly better than DU, and why? It seems like you believe it's too early in the season to believe that DU is really good, but these other teams, it's not? I don't understand.

DU fans, a friend is having trouble getting the video feed to work. She signed up and tried to watch the replay of the yale game. It keeps flickering and then pausing every 10 seconds. Any suggestions? It works fine for me on my laptop and she was able to watch the CC/UNH feed last night alright...

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Nodak, BU, UNH and ND have all beaten top 10 PWR teams, while DU has not beaten any top 15 PWR teams and lost the only game it played against one of those teams at home.

Hate to be the voice of reason, but PWR is absolutely meaningless at this point in the season, and there's a reason that USCHO never published it before late January previously...

Edit: I just realized it was a BC and NoDak fan arguing the merits of DU. Carry on ;)

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Brutal weekend for DU, need to sweep Badgers next weekend.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

“We know we can play offense,” said associate head coach Jim Tortorella, who works primarily with the defense, “but if we all play defense we’ll have more offense and I think the guys are taking pride in that.”

Rycroft saying the same thing after the game. Except DU was the one that should have been listening.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

IMHO, I'd say we've become too concerned with scoring goals and as a result are not playing the quality defensive game we were projected to have. Too much action in front of Sam tonight that should have been cleared.

We just have to work harder on protecting our net.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Tough weekend for a team that had been cruising along--riding high after sweeping CC. This team has a strange Jekyll and Hyde thing going on with puck control. I don't understand where it comes from. It was all Jekyll in the third tonight and close to 40 minutes last night. How many shots did we have in the third tonight...2? No ability to sustain the zone at all. -2 for 10 on the PP for the weekend. That sums it up right there. It will be interesting to see how this team responds to this big heaping serving of adversity.

I don't know much about Denver overall but from reading threads in anticipation of the UNH-DU matchup I get the sense that this team was, much like UNH, outperforming expectations this year. I think a tough weekend like this could help Denver more than people may think. They are out of conference games against quality teams which can be a wakeup call of sorts without hurting too much in the rankings. It's better to have it this weekend than in conference play in February.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

The other point is that the WCHA has one of the most competitive conferences in the nation (2nd and maybe not even to the CCHA)--nothing compared to Hockey Least and ECAC.

Would that be the same Hockey Least and ECAC that are currently holding down 6 of the top 7 PWR spots (7 of 8 if you count soon to be HE member ND)?

As for DU, I think my point was proven this weekend. It's one thing to beat a bunch of unranked teams, another to beat teams in the top 10, which DU was unable to do on two occasions this weekend at home. To be honest, not even sure if they belong in the top 10 anymore - certainly not the top 5...
