All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

I think it's tough for a 9-1 team that is not ranked #1 team to be overrated. That said, most of us DU fans still have some questions. I don't expect DU to keep up this torrid pace. That would mean getting to records of 20-2 and 30-3 as the season wears on. There will likely be an offensive drop off. But I don't think it will be TOO much of a drop off, just because of the scoring balance that we have, and the fact that our defensemen have been as much of an offensive threat as our forwards have been. Plus, there still is room for improvement in our defensive zone. Athough the goalies have been playing well, I wouldn't say they are yet playing "lights out."

So I guess I'd summarize by saying DU is not overrated. They have some holes in their game, but there is also room for improvement, and it's possible that the two will balance out.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

I always consider myself a hockey fan first, and a DU fan after that. I really don't know about those ranked 4-5 to say we are better or worse, but for once I do think we may actually be properly ranked.

This weekend will be a real test. Yale, with their schedule and Pairwise ranking of 8, DU ranked 1, and NH ranked 2, will say one way or another to the naysayers if DU is a real team or not.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

You can't really put too much stock into statistics at this point in the season. Denver will play a very difficult schedule when all is said and done. Of course, if they keep putting up 6 goals/game, it won't matter who they play.

When its all said and done? I think they've played a difficult enough of a schedule to this point. Lowell and Air Force aren't cupcakes, DU just made them look that way, and Tech too. They've played SCSU and CC and laugh all you want, Mankato is not a city they all that well in and they grinded out two wins. I think questioning if they're for real bc of their schedule is complete hogwash.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Yale's pairwise ranking is much too high due to the early season anomalies in that system, one vote from being 20th in the land in the USCHO poll is a proper ranking for Yale (at this time). UNH ranked 2 in the parwise is a much more realistic number. Wish i could be there!

It will all work itself out in the end, but you have to wonder if DU would have the same record if lets say they played BC (9-1-0) instead of UML (3-5-1) from HE and had 2 games at MN instead of MN State. DU has also only played 3 road games vs 7 at home and there next 4 are at home as well. DU is no doubt a top 10 team, just not sure if they are the second best team in the country, that's all..

Yes, when it all is said and done. You can't really put too much stock into stats at this point in the season. Of course, I shouldn't really have to say this to a SCSU fan...you guys know exactly how it feels to win the November National Title only to have your season crushed in March.

As for their schedule, I'm not saying it has been cupcake city (In fact, I haven't said much about their schedule at all, other than they will play a difficult schedule when all is said and done). I'm also not questioning if they are for real. I've said it before, but I guess I need to say it again, DU will not be fading away this year. In fact, I said before the season that I thought DU would improve as the year went on (didn't see this fast start happening though).

That being said, it is very easy for someone to look at their schedule and criticize it for lack of quality...

Massachusetts Lowell is tied for 8th in Hockey East with a 2-4-1 record, and is 3-5-1 overall.
Air Force is 7th in Atlantic hockey with a 2-1-1 record, and is 3-4-3 overall
Michigan Tech is 7th in the WCHA with a 3-5-0 record, and is 4-6-0 overall
St. Cloud State is 6th in the WCHA with a 4-2-0 record, and is 6-4-0 overall
Mankato is tied for last in the WCHA with a 1-5-0 record, and is 3-5-2 overall
CC is tied for 4th in the WCHA with a 4-2-0 reocrd, and is 7-5-0 overall

To date, DU has played 2 teams with over .500 records (and just barely), and their only loss came to one of those teams. The majority of their schedule has been against below .500 teams. Again, I don't put too much stock into stats/records at this point in the season, but if someone wants to question DU's ranking due to an easier schedule, I think that's fair. I have DU ranked #2 in my top 10...obviously I think they are legit. However, we won't know until it is all said and done.

Sure, but they haven't played BC. Perhaps if they had, BC wouldn't be 9-1. Of course, unlike BC, they also haven't lost to Northeastern (2-6-1). And they haven't spotted Merrimack (3-3-1) a 3-0 lead that they then had to overcome. Or been pushed to OT by UMass (3-5-1) The fact is, I don't see any team running away with anything right now, so while I won't swear that DU will still be ranked #2 in a week, a month, or heading into the tournament, right now they strike me as a pretty solid number 2.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

DU has had the advantage of home ice in the first 10 games, but...Coming up are back to back road trips to fka Sioux and Bemidiji. In 2013 a rematch in St.Cloud, at Duluth, and lastly at the gopher hole.

And a Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Yeah, its actually not fair to say they have had too easy of a schedule. 8 teams' fanbases can complain about it.

And that team that is barely over .500 happens to have the toughest schedule to date, and the only blemishes on their record have come at UNH, at DU and at home against UND.

Its pretty crazy to blame the opponents records when nine of the losses CAME AGAINST DU. :)

Every team would have a .500 record or better if they hadn't lost to DU. Jeez.

Not everyone, and still only 2 would be above .500. Again, I am only saying it is a legitimate criticism, not one I necessarily agree with. It is funny watching the DU fan and Euro getting their panties in a twist about this whole thing though. :p:D:D

Yes... pointing that its ridiculous to say a team with the 9th toughest schedule has played a bunch of cupcakes so far is "getting my panties in a twist."

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

My only point was that the front end of the schedule wasn't loaded with tough divisional games against the likes of MN, NoDak, nor tough non-conference games which are coming up now against UNH, BU, etc. The other issue is your schedule is front loaded with home games. Doubtful that as the season progresses and the competition gets tougher and you have a lot more away games, your high winning percentage is going to hold up. Regardless, DU is certainly a good team.
