Adrian Hockey: Season 9

Re: Adrian Hockey: Season 9

U-18 4
Adrian 1

Talent took over in the 3rd.

Wednesday night was my first glimpse of the Bulldogs under Coach Krug. Big team. Looked good for much of the night against the USA team but didn't score on some good chances. Adrian took it to them in the second period. They had plenty of chances to extend their lead. On the other hand, #19 - Keller, was a fun player to watch. He had a helluva goal from a tough angle. I'm sure we'll see several of those players in the NHL draft this upcoming summer.

I'll be watching on the computer tonight against Stevens Point after Michigan football takes it to that team down south.

Go Blue!

Adrian 3
UWSP 2

Adrian-UWSP games all typically have the same style. Thump and bang hockey. Physical. Rough. Chippy. Up and down action. Tempers flare, on the benches and on the ice. And you know what? I love this series. I'm glad we do this every year now. There's other teams that play this way that I don't care for. But for some reason, I enjoy this one.

This one was no different. Adrian scored two in the last 4:20, including the game winner with 1:12 left, and held on to pull out a 3-2 win. Kevin Entmaa let in a soft goal early on, but more than made up for it, robbing UWSP at least three times in the first period. The 2nd goal he gave up was from a scrum in front of the net where he just could not corral the puck, and into the net it went. That led to the eventual ending, with Adrian scrambling to hold UWSP off the board on a last second rush that may or may not have been a penalty on Adrian, but there would have been no time left on the clock for a faceoff.

Great, exciting game. I can't wait for the next one in February at Stevens Point.

Re: Adrian Hockey: Season 9

Hi.

We're at the break now after today's 2-1 win at Nazareth. It was nice to see Pat George and Michael Hoy each get their first goal of the season today.

We're going into the break at 8-1-1. A little bit of a slow start to the season, with the split at MSOE and the 3 point weekend at Marian that could have been either a sweep or a split, but I'll happily take it. This was to be expected, with the number of incoming players that needed to sort things out and get acclimated to each other and D-III competition in general.

The defense is coming around, led by seniors Adam Davies and Chris Leone, and the emergence of Kevin Entmaa in the net. And there's plenty of scoring with the addition of Connor Armour into the mix on the top two lines.

Get some rest, boys, because we're going right back into the fire right after New Years.

Re: Adrian Hockey: Season 9

And we came through the fire just fine. A pair of nice wins, first against Williams, and then in the title game against Oswego. Nice to see us knock the rust off quickly and get going. Also nice to see everyone get back to campus in one piece, more or less.

Off to Aurora for their first series there.

Re: Adrian Hockey: Season 9

I see an over/under question in the National Pick 'Em thread for us, asking if we beat Aurora by 5+ goals both nights. I'm trying to make some kind of sense of this new team.

Here's the reason I have cause for concern this weekend: Jacob Rutledge. Aurora's goaltender. Once upon a time this kid was on the USNTDP U-18 team, and played a season at Michigan. I saw him play for the U-18's at Arrington many moons ago. We scored 6 on him that night, but no one is at Adrian from that team. Circumstances now leave him at a first year NCAA D-3 team. Fine. But somewhere in there, that talent is still there inside that kid. I just hope that dragon doesn't come out of his lair this weekend.

SNC beat this team 4-1 in DePere, scoring all 4 goals in the 3rd period, outshooting them 54-17 that Friday night. Rutledge made 50 saves. The next night, SNC opened it up, winning 7-1. The starting goaltender got yanked that night early in the 2nd, and Rutledge came in, stopping 18 of 20 shots.

The numbers aren't there for Rutledge, with a 5.04 GAA and a .884 save percentage. The numbers are far better in conference play, with a 3.60 GAA and .907. Aurora doesn't look like they can score goals, with 25 goals in 11 games, and nobody with more than 3.

I don't think this is going to be quite the cakewalk that others think it is going to be. If this kid gets hot, we're going to end up in a dogfight. We'll see.

I decided on that question for the Bonus Pick and I kept going back and forth whether or not to make the Over/Under 3.5 or 4.5 goals. I like the Bonus Pick to have a balance of 50% one way, and 50% the other way. That way I know I picked a good, tough bonus. Looking at the picks that have been submitted so far, it looks to be fairly split. It will be interesting to see the strides Aurora makes this season and over the next few seasons.

Re: Adrian Hockey: Season 9

You watch. Now that I wrote that, they'll go out and roast Aurora 8-2 and 10-1.

Re: Adrian Hockey: Season 9

I do, too, for other reasons.

Later start tonight. 8:30 ET. We'll be in the 3rd period of the women's game tonight at Arrington by then.

I believe the SNC/Aurora series was at Aurora.

Rutledge had eye surgery early in his freshman season as an 18 year old at Michigan. No idea if or how that has affected his play since...

Re: Adrian Hockey: Season 9

The Adrian series is also at Aurora.

Shots are 45-10 at the moment, and apparently Aurora is going to be down a man for tomorrow as well, as one of their guys took a 5-CFB and a DQ, according to live stats. I think we took care of business tonight. We'll see about tomorrow afternoon.

Re: Adrian Hockey: Season 9

It has come to my attention that junior goaltender Peter Megariotis has transferred to St. Scholastica. He transferred here this past summer after being at Ohio State and LSSU.

The kid wants to play. I don't blame him for that. I do not begrudge him one bit. He was our third-string goaltender behind Entmaa and Parks. I had the chance to get to know him briefly this year. He's a good guy. I wish him the best, with the exception of when his team meets ours. Go get it, Pete.

Re: Adrian Hockey: Season 9

Adrian 8
Aurora 1

Adrian 11
Aurora 0

Well, scratch all that about my concerns with regards to Rutledge. We shelled him pretty good both nights, and he got pulled today. 5/9 on the power play today, per the live stats, and Parks got the shutout.

We come home next weekend to host Lake Forest.

Re: Adrian Hockey: Season 9

Adrian 5
LFC 1

Adrian poured in 3 goals in the last ~5 minutes of the 1st period. Then in the 2nd LFC took two penalties before the referee could blow his whistle, giving Adrian a 5x3 for a full 2 minutes. Adrian didn't need the full 2 minutes, and unloaded LFC's penalty box all by themselves to make it 5-0. Podolsky was pulled, and it looked like LFC had surrendered. LFC got a goal shortly afterwards to get it to 5-1, but that was it for the night. A little chippy in the 3rd, but nothing egregious.

We might need more of a 60 minute effort today, especially going into next weekend's series with you-know-who.

Re: Adrian Hockey: Season 9

Sorry. Calendar dictates otherwise. I'm probably at my office Saturday morning. Plus I get to watch our girls demolish Finlandia this weekend at home, although I'm not working this series.

I remember the last SNC-Adrian game where I was at a game at Arrington while the boys were at SNC. I didn't like how that one ended.

Re: Adrian Hockey: Season 9

UWSP 6
Adrian 4

We grabbed a 2-0 lead, and after that I didn't like anything I saw/read/heard about. Get home, get this fixed, and let's get back to playing like we're supposed to.

Re: Adrian Hockey: Season 9

Totally agree, that was not pretty to watch. Looked like a few individual players instead of teammates and poor sportsmanship too.
