Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

I want to say it's off the Cretin/Vandalia exit from 94 but don't know the area well enough to say. Grey might be a good source for this one.

It's just north of University Ave on Transfer Rd in St. Paul's Midway area - which is about halfway between the downtowns. From I-94 you can either take Snelling of Cretin-Vandallia's exits, the station between them. University Ave is a complete disaster due to Light Rail construction so allow more time than you think if driving there.

Food in the area....not so much nearby. There's Day's Inn nearby with a bar restaurant (Tracks?) but I've never been there.

Thanks for the info. Was kind of hoping there'd be a place to grab a sandwich after a long train ride, but my sandwich will have to wait til the next day.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

What day do you get in and where are you staying?
So far, the schedule looks like this:

Departure from Holland, MI: 10/3 at 8:21 AM
Arrival at Amtrak station in St. Paul: 10/3 at 10:31 PM
Marathon: 10/7 at 8 AM
Departure from St. Paul: 7:50 AM

I'm also staying with a friend from NMU, who works in the Wild promotions office.

You've got a few days, then. That's good.

So the area around the station is primarily industrial but if you have a ride (or need one - I live within a couple miles of the station) I'm sure there's a sandwich to be found.

The past three years, I've never been able to enjoy the trip. This year, I wanted to change that; I've been wanting to come to the Twin Cities since I graduated from NMU. Hopefully, I'll be able to hang out with all of you and celebrate my finish together.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

OK, I probably shouldn't have to do this, but in the spirit of laziness...

Anyone have suggestions for family friendly activities in St. Cloud, MN? My kid (14) has a hockey tourney there this coming weekend with several hours between games on Saturday. Probably just time to eat and do one activity if there is a good one.

Thanks,

leave as quickly as possible? ;):)

Strongly considering going to Collegeville or Little Falls between games, but was hoping to drive less. We're not staying overnight, the game times work out all three days to drive up and back.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

Can I bring my own food on the train or do I have to buy from the on-board cafeteria?

Yeah, you can bring your own food and beverages on board, no one minds as long as you aren't either drunk or especially messy. You can even bring it to the cafe car and eat there. There are some decent places in Chicago Union Station too, if you forget or can't bring anything, and you will probably have enough time to buy a sandwich there.

Thank you; I plan on packing a couple extra sandwiches and water bottles so I can save some money. I'll plan more details the closer the trip.

And I do plan on going for a big sandwich and a beer or two after the race; hope to see some of you at the finish line.
