A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

One of the things I've been thinking about is a place to celebrate after I finish the marathon on the 7th. Ideally, it would be close to the finish line.

Also, I've done some more thinking, and I would definitely like to go on a "food tour." I do want my first Jucy Lucy experience at Matt's, Gasthof's sounds like a good place, as do the mills, and I'd like to visit Peace Coffee as well. Are there any good markets, bakeries, or coffee shops I should visit?

I'm giving this some thought. In the meantime, the City Pages newspaper here in the Twin Cities has a great (and deserved) reputation for restaurant/bar recommendations. You should bookmark it! http://www.citypages.com/restaurants/search/

I will give props to City Pages for random things to do. They have a severe hipster bias against chains and such, but that's what they do.*

*Believe it or not, some chains are fun.

From tcmevents.org:
The point-to-point course begins near Mall of America Field in downtown Minneapolis and finishes at the State Capitol in Saint Paul. The course winds around four beautiful lakes and both sides of the Mississippi River. While it does have some rolling hills, with a starting and finishing elevation of approximately 840 feet and no climbs over 100 feet long, they aren’t anything you can’t handle. Run past the clanging bells of the St. Paul Cathedral. From there you'll get a specatular view of the State Capitol with a nice downhill to the finish line!

From tcmevents.org:
So, St. Paul...I only know the places around there that I've gone for hockey games or other events at Xcel. I guess I'd recommend a place like Great Waters, a brewpub in downtown St. Paul, that has pretty good food. Or else you could go to McGovern's or another place like that. I don't know of any places closer to the Capitol though. If you want to get a little further away, there are some places on Grand Ave, and Selby, that are pretty good. You should talk to Greyeagle, he's the St. Paul guru.

I'll do just that. Also, another friend of mine sent me a list of restaurants to check out, so I'll add those to the list.

Once I finish, I'll be looking to eat and have that post-race beer.

City Pages . . . They have a severe hipster bias . . .

Early on I just accepted that the first thirty pages were "Evil world government/corporations/entrepreneurs/normal people want to squash lesbian playwright/bike messenger/organic watercress commune" stories, and went straight to the good theater and restaurant listings. :D\

edit: I should point out, for any lesbian playwrights/bike messengers/organice commune residents reading this, I'm all for your doing your thing. But that doesn't mean you are by definition awesome.

Lots and lots of deet.
you can avoid the bugs if you go after the first frost, or early enough in the year that it still frosts at night but is pleasant during the day, but the ferry stops running pretty much a few days after labor day so your season to get there and enjoy is very short.

I was thinking mid-September. Usually cooler than August, and most of the tourists have gone back to Ill-annoy, WI, and Detroit.

I've been presented with so much information that it sounds like I'll have to make a return trip. And for what it's worth, I'd like as many of you to join me in the post-race celebration.

Also, this might sound stupid, but where is the Amtrak station? And are there any decent food operations that are nearby and open after 10:30 at night?

I want to say it's off the Cretin/Vandalia exit from 94 but don't know the area well enough to say. Grey might be a good source for this one.

It's just north of University Ave on Transfer Rd in St. Paul's Midway area - which is about halfway between the downtowns. From I-94 you can either take Snelling of Cretin-Vandallia's exits, the station between them. University Ave is a complete disaster due to Light Rail construction so allow more time than you think if driving there.

Food in the area....not so much nearby. There's Day's Inn nearby with a bar restaurant (Tracks?) but I've never been there.
