Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

Rent a house on St. John for a week. You can do some touristy things on that island but most touristy people don't go there (hence the recommendation).
Interesting idea. I've had a couple of good experiences with VRBO rentals in the past, but I'm not sure how well it jives with the resort-with-on-site-spa template that my fiancee has in mind.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

In case anyone is travelling through New England, the "northern section" of the Bennington Bypass (VT 279) has opened. This allows high-speed access from NY 7 around Hoosick Falls to the Molly Stark Trail (VT 9) east of Bennington, and is, IMO, the quickest free road through the Berkshires from the Albany area to points in Southern VT/NH or Northern MA (though I've never been on US 20 east of Pittsfield MA). http://www.wcax.com/story/19418826/2nd-leg-of-vts-bennington-bypass-open-to-traffic

I've travelled the western segment (NY 7 in Hoosick Falls to US 7 north of Bennington) several times, and it's a very nice super-two highway. I may have to check out the northern section when I'm over there again. I really wish the northern section were completed around 2007-08, so I didn't have to go through downtown Bennington on my way to Winchendon MA.

What kind of weather should I expect the first week of October in Minnesota?
In a normal year, mid 50's to mid 60's for the daily highs. This year? Who knows. It was 94 today, and tomorrow it's going to be 66.

Where should I go on my honeymoon?
to be serious for a second, Paris is the gold standard. Very, very romantic and plenty to do. e mail me if you are serious about it.
second on my list would be Greece. Cheap, fantastic beaches, nice people, plenty to do. Bali is cool too but expensive to get to. Canadian Rockies nice.
In the US, NYC is nice, with a ton of things to do and is very safe ( really), but expensive, Chicago same, Puerto Rico is a great time and has good beach even in winter, no customs required.Mackinac Island is nice in the summer, Also some places in Colorado are very cool, Durango in particular.I enjoy San Francisco and LA but a lot of people there just like NY. so lot's of choices depending on your budget.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

If you can't decide on where to go, you could always drive the country in a '58 Chevette, or one of those vehicles you hear the stories about couples getting it on in the back of. ;)

I think your suggestion of NYC is perfect for jmh. He'd really enjoy that ****hole. :D

Go to Kauai and deal with the hell of having to leave and go back home.
I have been to a lot of places in the world, from Argentina to Zimbabwe. And Kauai is on my short list of places that exceeds every expectation. Just amazing.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

The one place I've gone that blew away any epectations was Scotland. It was on my list of places I'd like to see, but I wasn't anywhere close to actually going there, until I was sent there for work. The place was incredible, with the only exception being that the weather sucks something fierce.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

In case anyone is thinking about going to Texas, they will have a toll road with a speed limit of 85 MPH. To think, 30 years ago vehicles were given speedometers with 85 being the top-out speed, and now people will be able to legally go that fast once again in this country (Montana and Nevada previously having reasonable & prudent). http://www.nydailynews.com/autos/te...t-highest-u-s-highest-world-article-1.1156551

Thanks for the pointers. We're hoping to go someplace neither of us have been before (so Paris and California are out), and as BBDL noted we live in NYC so I don't think that's in our honeymoon plans. We've been considering Greece; my sister and brother-in-law went there on their honeymoon and loved it. I have a friend who lives in Oregon who recommended Bali as well, but the flight from the East Coast is significantly more expensive than from out where he lives, if I'm not mistaken.

Think not only in terms of monetary cost, but time cost. Would you really want to spend two days sitting on an airplane? Perhaps a place like Cancún or the Caribbean would be a possibility?

Granted, I hate to fly, so I probably wouldn't necessarily do that if I were to go on a honeymoon, not to mention we'd probably leave from Toronto so the TSA doesn't rape my wife.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

I'd stay away from most of northern Africa these days.

Actually, I'd like to visit Croatia's coast. Some of the coastal areas are supposed to be a lot like Italy, but obviously different, and much cheaper. Paradoxically, the country is listed as both a high income and emerging market economy.

Yeah, the Caribbean is another one that's high on our list for a variety of convenience-related reasons; probably not so much Mexico because we'd be a bit concerned about safety. (I'm of the opinion that even if we want to stay at a resort, we should try to get off the resort property and actually see some local character, and I would be significantly more hesitant to do so in Mexico than I would be in most of the Caribbean.)

On the other hand, while spending a long time sitting on an airplane isn't really appealing, this could potentially be a trip that's long enough to justify a plane ride of significant length. Like, say we wanted to go to Australia (which we don't, because it's late fall in the southern hemisphere, but for the sake of argument). It seems like the best way to get there is to leave JFK in the evening, fly to LAX and arrive later in the evening, have a layover of a couple of hours, and then spend 15 hours in the air to Sydney, arriving two days later (i.e. leave NYC 6pm Tuesday, arrive Sydney 7am Thursday). If you're taking two week trip, spending a day and a half in the air sucks, but the trip is long enough that the flight doesn't eat up a massive portion of it; not so if it's a one week trip. But because we won't be able to plan many trips of longer than a week in the future due to a variety of factors, and we might be able to now, then if we do have a destination we'd like to go that's that far away, it makes sense to take this opportunity to go there.

That being said, while it'd be awesome to go to the South Pacific (or I guess if we were considering Bali it's in the Indian Ocean), 3 grand and up for flights (coach, that is) is pretty steep.

Edit to add, since St. Clown posted while I was typing: I've heard fantastic things about Croatia, both in the mass media (Bourdain had glowing things to say about it in his show earlier this season) and from personal accounts (my fiancee's brother spent a long weekend there while he was studying abroad in Europe this spring and when we asked him about it he just said "GO"). I think we may add it to the list as well.

I'll throw in Malta (specifically, Valetta). It probably isn't a place you could spend a week+ at, but maybe if you do go the Greece route, you could add it to the itinerary. Tons of real old buildings (iirc 14th/15th century, maybe earlier), southern Mediterranean weather, and some great beaches that are only a super, super cheap bus ride outside of Valetta.

I enjoyed seeing the Athens/Piraeus area when I was there a couple summers ago. Don't need to explain too much there, but feel free to ask questions and I'll see what I can do.
