Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

Stay away from Planet Hollywood Casino. The place is hell.

The brunch buffet was pretty good at the Bellagio.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

The buffet at Paris Paris is pretty good.

It's really hard to go wrong in Vegas....

I believe Gordon Ramsay is opening a restaurant at Paris Las Vegas, with the Hell's Kitchen winner as a senior chef (though likely not executive; they typically don't have the winner be the executive chef).

St. Thomas

Gonna be there for a week in December. Anyone been?

Staying at Bolongo Bay and diving with St. Thomas Diving Club.

Beyond that, looking for suggestions. Cool beaches, good snorkeling areas, essential restaurants...

Las Vegas? I've never been there and we are going out next month.

The definitive guide to Vegas.

Sign up for player's club cards, they'll mail you crap for free/reduced rooms. Don't get in strange taxis/limos (legit taxis will never park on the Strip or the curb, it's illegal. Go to a hotel dropoff if you need a taxi.) Don't make eye contact with the handbill slappers (you'll know what I'm talking about when you see one.) "Best" odds on gambling are blackjack and craps (just bet the pass line/odds, keeps it simple and most other bets are sucker bets.) Avoid slots unless you just want to kill time or are gunning for comps, avoid video poker unless you SERIOUSLY know what you're doing.

MGM and New York New York are nice. Tropicana is kind of a dump. Stratosphere has the rides at the top which are awesome if you have no apparent fear of death. Cirque du Soleil is a must see.

I asked my host about where to go for Italian, and she suggested Cossetta's or Yarousso in St. Paul. Of the two, which one's better?

Everyone who's been there recently will have an opinion. Frankly, I'm with Brent in that I tend to prefer the classier places like Bellagio or Mandalay where you feel the need to put on a sportcoat in the evenings - sort of "modern old school" Vegas. The family-era theme joints (Excalibur, NY NY, Paris, etc.) weren't a high point for me, though a late lunch at one of the fake Parisian sidewalk cafes was bearable.

Tropicana is indeed a dump, but also one of the last of its kind in being mostly a 50s-era slots joint. Might as well stroll through before it comes down for the next monolith or MGM expansion.

"Downtown" Vegas may or may not be worth the cab ride. You could kill half a day shopping there if the family is bored, or you can gamble at the Nugget while the wifey shops. There was a fun western shop if you're looking for one of bb_dl's neat hats. :p

I'm probably in the minority for enjoying the cheesy, late 80s tropical vibe of the Mirage - saw Danny Gans there before he croaked and ate in an awesome, gourmet Chinese restaurant that did not have a famous chef's name plastered on it ;). That whole trend was just starting when I was last there, so I'm sure it's exploded to ridiculous proportions by now with all the new places that have opened in just the last five years.

If you are a big Beatles fan you have to go to Liverpool. awesome is an understatement, and it's cheap there.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed Liverpool when I visited there. Many other people were surprised since I guess it had gotten a reputation for being sorta dumpy. I was there in July 2008, so they were the cultural city of the year or whatever thing they had going on, lots of development anyways.

I've spent more time in Vegas than the rest of you combined and this makes absolutely zero sense. In fact, your entire post reads as if it was pulled off some hotel lobby brochure in Park City, Utah. It's Vegas, not Moscow for crying out loud. Were it Moscow your black-market taxi advice should be more than well-heeded though you can usually get out of it with a small payoff to the authorities. I also have a good feel for which train stations have the best heroin-laden hookers but I doubt that's what jmh is looking for in a honeymoon.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

I have gotten into taxis on the strip as well. None brought me to a strip club or anything, but a few were pulled over. The Metro doesn't like it.

My folks go to St John every yr for a month. Their advice whenever anyone goes down is to bring food (boxed or packaged) for lunch and sunscreen because everything there is ridiculously expensive.

They need to get out more. Tourist places and tourist areas are expensive. But real people live on St. John, and they eat real food. Being that it's the US, the food places are better controled than what one would think- so you can go to any hole in the wall, and be ok. There are holes in the wall places on Islands. Just takes some work to find.

While I've not gone too far into the USVI, if you can find a sea side town, not really a major tourist place, I bet you can find some really good and cheap seafood. Puerto Rico- they are all over the place.

(other than that, I'm no help. remember to drive on the left!)

While I'll try most things at least once, I think heroin-laden Russian hookers might be on the list of things I'll try twice.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

Is there still a Dinapoli's around in downtown St. Paul/Minneapolis? We went there growing up and on occasion since, and it was always good Italian food. Heard they had moved from their long time location awhile back.
