Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

Mrs. EoDS and I are heading to Seattle/Vancouver around New Year's. Any suggestions? So far, I've got that fish market in Seattle and the incredible urge to take our time driving to Vancouver. And, for sentimental reasons, visit the Pelmeni restaurant in Seattle.

Sounds like my fiancee's brother is getting married in Greece the spring after our wedding, so I guess that's out for our honeymoon. I think we're definitely leaning toward the Caribbean at this point.
Mrs. EoDS and I did Jamaica.

There are some off-resort things we enjoyed while we were there, but let's be honest: that wasn't a very high priority item on our agenda!

I very rarely fly. I think I've only been on two round-trip plane trips. One non-stop because it's hard to drive to Frankfurt, and one as part of a senior trip in K-12 school.
I can't say that. :p
I have about 30 segments so far this year, with at least 7 more left before the end of the year. Including 3 trans-Atlantic flights. But I fly almost exclusively Delta/KLM.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

You may be the only person I've ever heard describe the Metrodome as "nice." ;)

Otherwise, good. You picked a pretty good set of tourist locations all in all. Glad you liked the train too - Amtrak should be even nicer next year once St. Paul Union Depot opens, though you'll still be paying $2.25 for a bottle of water on the train.

Do you hear dueling banjos played off in the distance when you go to sleep at night?
I have my hostess to thank for showing me around. She knew all the touristy spots and knew exactly where to take me.

As for the Metrodome, it was nice as in "my first time in a professional football stadium," not nice otherwise. I thought the concourse looked pretty dumpy.

The whole place is the definition of dumpy.

Yup. Thank Parise the Humpty Dump/Metrodump is not long for this world. When I was 9 and it was being it built it seemed cool. :o
So you wish the snow would have finished the job last year?

Also, I find it odd that Hennepin County Medical Center is right next door. Granted, HCMC was pretty nice, including cute nurses and a fly as hell social worker. If I got sick again, I wouldn't mind being treated there.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

I have a buddy that is a paramedic for HCMC. If the stories he tells are even half true, the people that work there are pretty awesome.

I remember thinking it was cool as it was being built and inflated....also remember thinking this place sucks the first time I went to a game.
The ultimate sign of insecurity at the dump? A big 'ole "We Like It Here" banner down the right field line.

I couldn't remember my friend's phone number, and she was the only one that could come get me. So after telling the social worker that my friend left me her phone number on Facebook, the social worker grabbed her phone, pulled up my profile and messages, got my friend's number, called her using a hospital phone, and told her where I was. Overall, between the Health East ambulance crew and the staff at HCMC, I was treated with the utmost care and respect.

Cancun. fly in rent a car and head south to tulum or akumal. rent something on the beach. make sure the gas station boys zero the counter before they pump your gas. keep a couple of $10 or $20 bills ready to pay off cops. dont drink the water. anything goes on the highway - its a madhouse, but better than the bus. food is delicious. beaches beyond beautiful. snorkel. visit the cenotes. tulum ruins are incredible. climb the pyramid at Coba. see the mayan ballcourt. see the armed soldiers guarding the national parks. the chocolate is also fab. dont even think about drugs. stay sober and stay safe. dont get caught in the crossfire.

its really beautiful, you just have to be careful.

Yep. Sounds like a great time. ;)

Went to the Maya Riviera two years ago. Shuttle from the airport to the all-inclusive which was beautiful, but was told it was 25% dicey to leave the compound. I loved the place but I'll never again go to a destination again if I'm going to feel shakey about walking around. (and no I am not one of those dopes that are afraid to go into a city)

We went to Cozumel to an all-inclusive place a couple years ago. Really enjoyed that. We didn't venture too far into town, but have had friends who have rented cars there and drove all over the place without difficulty. There is also a ferry to the mainland with some Aztec/Mayan ruins not too far away.

The island vibe is nice and laidback as well.
