A New Coach for UMass...

Re: A New Coach for UMass...

What about someone like Mike Bavis? He's an assistant for the Springfield AHL club now, longtime assistant BU coach. Could be an interesting opportunity.

Re: A New Coach for UMass...

I think the candidate pool might consist of any/all of the following:

CURRENT D-1 HCs
* Rick Bennett

FORMER D-1 HCs
* Paul Pearl
* Tim Whitehead

CURRENT D-1 Associate/Assistants (with HE ties)
* Ben Barr
* Scott Borek
* Jerry Keefe
* David Lassonde
* Albie O'Connell
* Bill Riga
* Mike Sousa

FORMER D-1 Associate/Assistants (with HE ties)
* Mike Bavis
* Darren Yopyk

Tim Whitehead doesn't really seem like a good fit. His MO is to take already-good programs and deposit them directly into the garbage.

Re: A New Coach for UMass...

I know hoky loves rick bennett and he'd probably be good for umass but things haven't gone so well the last couple years for him.

Which could be an opportunity for UMass to poach him from Union.

Re: A New Coach for UMass...

Exactly. He maximized his opportunity to win it all with the talent Leaman left for him and now he's struggling to get back to that level with his own recruits. It could be an opportunity for him to get a nice raise and land in a situation where things can't get much worse, whereas if he stays and things at Union keep trending downward where does that leave him? His value may never be higher than right now.

Did he not leverage a national title into a significant pay raise at Union?

Can UMass pay all that much for a hockey coach at this point? Football is losing money like crazy.

Plus the 400+k contact settlements for Michelletto and their women's coach. That doesn't include assistant coaches etc. They aren't going to have the finances to give any D1 coach a major raise.

Re: A New Coach for UMass...

The fans in western mass will support a good product and the facilities are better than most schools in the league. Not an easy place to recruit to but who considers lowell, Massachusetts a destination? (No offense). That hasn't hindered norm bazin.

The right guy (provided there's a good AD) can do a hell of a lot better than john micheletto.

Re: A New Coach for UMass...

U Mass can pay far more than Union
Union recruits coming in and fresh Soph classes are exceptional. Pipeline is outstanding
Union is in very good shape going forward

Right, but its not like we hear about Norm winning recruiting battles... or anything about Lowell recruits

To be expected. All about finding the right coach. A good coach can win anywhere. Mel Pearson at michigan tech, leaman at union and pc, etc.

I didn't realize until just now that Bennett was an assistant on Leaman's staff at Union, so he would have been involved in recruiting those players. Not really fair of me to say he won with Leaman's recruits.

Re: A New Coach for UMass...

$244,400 in 2015 per Boston Herald.

With that amount of coaching salary and an administration willing to spend money on recruiting, this program could be competitive. I get the feeling that this new AD is going to achieve success in hockey.

Generally speaking, what is the average of a coaching salary in college hockey?
