A Discussion of US Immigration Policy

Re: A Discussion of US Immigration Policy

This should be interesting. Folks are going to freak out

I think I'll wait for somebody a little more even-tempered than Fox to actually analyze the content. They have been known to scream **** You, Obama! about executive actions that just continued Dubya's policies because that's the narrative their audience wants to hear.

When I googled "immigration obama" under Recent News the top four responses were: Fox News, Washington Times, National Review, and WSJ. Sounds like somebody already had their outrage cued up ready to go.

You do that, I predict people are going to freak out

I know some people are going to freak out. Some people freaked out over Benghazi. The question is whether it will be warranted, or whether it will be the usual Echo Chamber game, "Obama spends billions to arm millions of government employees! Calls radical plan 'army.' We go now to our Senior Freedom Consultants, who are deeply troubled."

Re: A Discussion of US Immigration Policy

Apparently, Canada is having a border problem, too. From the Manitoba Herald (sorry, link is not working)

The flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada has intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the illegal immigration. The recent actions of the Tea Party and the fact Republicans won the Senate are prompting an exodus among left-leaning citizens who fear they’ll soon be required to hunt, pray, and to agree with Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Beck.

Canadian border farmers say it’s not uncommon to see dozens of sociology professors, animal-rights activists and Unitarians crossing their fields at night.

“I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood producer huddled in the barn,” said Southern Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield, whose acreage borders North Dakota . “The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry. He asked me if I could spare a latte and some free-range chicken. When I said I didn’t have any, he left before I even got a chance to show him my screenplay, eh?”

In an effort to stop the illegal aliens, Greenfield erected higher fences, but the liberals scaled them. He then installed loudspeakers that blared Rush Limbaugh across the fields. “Not real effective,” he said. “The liberals still got through and Rush annoyed the cows so much that they wouldn’t give any milk.”

Officials are particularly concerned about smugglers who meet liberals near the Canadian border, pack them into Volvo station wagons, and drive them across the border where they are simply left to fend for themselves. “A lot of these people are not prepared for our rugged conditions,” an Ontario border patrolman said. “I found one carload without a single bottle of imported drinking water. They did have a nice little Napa Valley cabernet, though.” When liberals are caught, they’re sent back across the border, often wailing loudly that they fear retribution from conservatives. Rumors have been circulating about plans being made to build re-education camps where liberals will be forced to drink domestic beer and watch NASCAR races. [I'd agree to an increase in my taxes for this one!]

In recent days, liberals have turned to ingenious ways of crossing the border. Some have been disguised as senior citizens taking a bus trip to buy cheap Canadian prescription drugs. After catching a half- dozen young vegans in powdered wig disguises, Canadian immigration authorities began stopping buses and quizzing the supposed senior-citizens about Perry Como and Rosemary Clooney to prove that they were alive in the ’50s. “If they can’t identify the accordion player on The Lawrence Welk Show, we become very suspicious about their age,” an official said.

Canadian citizens have complained that the illegal immigrants are creating an organic-broccoli shortage and are renting all the Michael Moore movies. “I really feel sorry for American liberals, but the Canadian economy just can’t support them,” an Ottawa resident said. “How many art-history majors does one country need?”

In an effort to ease tensions between the United States and Canada, Vice President Biden met with the Canadian ambassador and pledged that the administration would take steps to reassure liberals. A source close to President Obama said, “We’re going to have some Paul McCartney and Peter, Paul & Mary concerts. We might even put some endangered species on postage stamps. The President is determined to reach out.”

Re: A Discussion of US Immigration Policy

Someone put together a montage of all the different times during the past six years that Obama, in a speech or at a press conference, said over and over again that the President does not have the power unilaterally to rewrite the immigration laws.

For six years, he kept saying the same thing over and over.

What changed recently that he suddenly discovered that he does have that power after all?

Thing is, he probably does have the power since the limits on executive action seem to be foggy. One positive outcome of this could be that the scope of executive action is finally thoroughly and unambiguously defined. A nice little Constitutional Crisis now and then can be a good thing.

Unlike 99% of all the wailing from the righty wahmbulance over the years, this is legitimate criticism. That's an accident, since the only reason they're upset is the letter after the executive's name -- they were mum when Bush did much worse -- but just cuz the clock's broke doesn't mean it isn't 6 o'clock. Politically it makes sense (Congress shirks its duty, the President thinks something needs to get done). Procedurally it probably is legal, but IMHO it violates the spirit of the separation of powers. The solution to an obstructionist Congress is to clean out Congress. The voters didn't do that, in fact they gave even more control to the very people who are causing the problems. But in our system the voter knows what he wants and he deserves to get it good and hard. This is not the way.

Mitch popping a bolt today. Someone needs to remind him that Obama is still the President no matter what the automatons did in Kentucky.

Mitch popping a bolt today.

He's ready for his close-up, Mr. DeMille.

Mitch is in heaven that the knucks are going to be out in force screaming IMPEACHTEHWITCH!!!11, because he knows when they're not distracted by some DEMONcrat red meat, they remember how much they hate... Mitch.

Gotta loved Colburn's concern trolling about violence after the announcement. If the shoe were on the other foot the Echo Chamber would be screeching about inciting to riot and demanding a resignation followed by an exorcism and a beheading.

Re: A Discussion of US Immigration Policy

Policy wise this was relatively small ball. De-emphasizing deporting immigrants who aren't committing crimes to focus on those that are? That's kinda the unofficial policy already and has been long before Obama got into office. Work permits for 2 years for 5M? Okay that's a change but I major one? Not really.

Politics wise for once pundidiots have it right. He's directly daring the GOP to either a) do something stupid, or b) actually pass a bill. Lets just say I know which one my money's on.... ;)

I like Itch McConnell's senile response. "The new Senate will act" - yes they will, as as conservatives they'll act in one of three ways.

1) Whine
2) Suck their thumbs
3) Play with themselves

Or some combination of the 3. :D

You forgot their signature move

4) Take the economy hostage and threaten to shoot it if they don't get their way

Just because the GOP is pathetic doesn't mean it's not dangerous.

This is JUST LIKE the Affordable Care Act. The Republicans have no policy.

I don't remember a "no policy" clause in the constitution. Is it next to "congress has to pass things I want or else I get to do it myself" subsection?

Re: A Discussion of US Immigration Policy

well, at least Jonathan Gruber is no longer front page news on the political front.... :(
