One strange thing I noticed this season is that Vallis struggles to crack the line-up, but when he is in the line-up you usually see him getting power play time. It is interesting to see someone who is on the PP unit, struggling to make the line-up. I'm guessing the coaching staff feels the D-side of his game is not at the same level so there are better overall options for the lineup, but he has above average play under PP situations.

Also great to see Reid get that "eagle shorty" goal. If we can find another one or two guys to pick up their scoring a little, being able to put up four goals a night will lead to a lot of Ws.

Ryan J

Could also be an issue of a very fresh set of legs? Does he have a great shot?

In the most reserved I've ever been at games - because my daughters were with me - wT and I chant HOSER at Nell, as it was obvious he was headed to the bench and at that end of the ice (final words are "Take off, eh!") and it would be funny. No laughter around us, and some crusty old crumdgeon turns around an yells back "HEY *****HOLE, why don't you shut up!" Right in front of my daughter.
This is also the same old man hollering at Tech players all night.

To calm myself down, I yelled towards him - "So you're allowed to yell profanity and I don't get to say anything. Ok, sir. Message received. Nice lesson for the kids."
I let 2 minutes on the clock go by, then loud enough for everyone in the section to hear as people around us are getting up to leave (because they can't stay for the whole game apparently) "And I don't appreciate your language in front of my children or others, sir. But you have yourself a good night."

Outside of that and the student "hype guy" that needed to be taken behind the woodshed and beaten with the microphone he was already trying to jam down his throat....it was an enjoyable evening.

The Tech crowd was amazing. We were clearly more audible than the Bleacher Creatures throughout the game. At least 15-20% Tech fans at the game in a crowd of probably 3000-3500. The most you could hear of the Bleacher Creatures was the boos as Tech came on and left the ice.

At least halftime got a little bit of a chuckle out of a few.....sheesh.

As salty as I am, if there are kids around, "sucks" is the strongest language I use, and come down hard on people who don't do likewise. Good for you to be stern, clean, and make your point. Especially knowing how riled you get during games (we recognize our own kind ;) )

John Scott, NHL All Star MVP, who though that would ever happen in a million years? And the thing is, he actually held his own with the best players in the game, and he became a fan favorite, he did anything but embarrass himself, he showed he belonged.

John Scott Day in the NHL.

John Scott... he showed he belonged.
Honestly, anyone who really watches hockey had to know he was going to be ok in the game. You don't get to the NHL for any reason without at least an above average ability to skate, stick handle and shoot. If that wasn't true, NHL teams would just draft MMA athletes to protect their talent.

Scott's second goal in the ASG was very similar to one he sniped with the Sharks last season. All these guys at the top end of hockey can play. Think of it another way, if Scott played 20 minutes a game, in all types of situations, like most other players, how many points would he get in a season? Does Scott not play because he doesn't score, or does he not score because he rarely plays?

Very true, he actually expressed how disappointed he was in not getting to play more with Arizona because he felt like he was playing really well in the chances he got.

He's a body that gets in the way and slows down the offense, IMO. When MN had him and Boogaard, I wanted them both on the PK, and clog the lanes. What do you think would happen? Those 2 giants? Yeah.

Anyway, love Scott, love how he handled this, love that he backed up the rep of his stand-up character.

Aside from his chasing people down on the streets of Houghton one time... he's been a model citizen. I'm happy all this turned out the way it did.

For the longest time he's been mocked and ridiculed, but would any of you turn down $750K a year to play Sheriff on the ice? He played Sheriff and he did it well. I know I'd be a great Sheriff for that price. This is the end of an era. It's like the last of the 4-barrel carbed muscle cars. Like he said in his article, he can skate and shoot enough to make it to college and through the minors. It's not like he's some guy grabbed out of the stands.

The burn on Roenick was SICK. Mike Milbury had steam coming out his ears. He couldn't trash the people's champ!

Great weekend!!!

Mike Milbury should be fired. That is the next campaign to start. Get that ***** off the TV, where he belongs.

A few of my Mel P show takeaways. I didn't realize they're on TV Friday, have never heard of American Sports Network. 8 PM ET start

Mel P notes:
Jumped right into with John Scott - Mel as fellow alum - so proud of how John and his wife handled media

On BGSU:
Goalie Nell's numbers were unbelievable - didn't want to talk to our team about that
Did tell our team if anyone was going to go to BGSU and beat them it was this team now and they were prepared
Bus ride home - leave 10PM home at 8AM
BGSU had 21 straight games of not giving up more than 3 goals
Petan's goal - long review - refs decided it went in off BGSU stick

Questions for Mel:
Will Evan Anderson be a redshirt, he's played 2 games.
He redshirted last year. Evans made good strides in practice, we've told Evan to be ready. We have 5 games coming up at home, he is an option.

For non-conference is it possible to schedule two teams that could play at NMU/Tech. It's possible, Denver/CC or BC/BU, maybe St. Cloud/Minnesota.
We've talked about it, but it's hard to get teams to come up here with a regular schedule, much less added travel and find 2 teams with open dates in that example.

Distraction concerns with Winter Carnival?
A little bit, want them to enjoy their time with families. Everyone is different, but want a routine and stick to that routine to be ready mentally/physically.

Some reserved seats for WC - general admission tickets are on sale.
Friday night game is 8PM (TV Coverage info will be posted on website) and Saturday 5PM.

Mel said yes we'd go on TV - but want features on community, the university etc., they've said they'd do that. Otherwise wouldn't mess with the later start.

Blueline luncheon on Friday. Reservations Thursday by noon.

Heinonen had a good weekend, worked out with Shelast. We'll see how much he can do this week. Guys have stepped up in his absence, tough decisions going forward.
Jake Jackson making progress too. Anderson, Hyland, Kero all doing good too, we have depth.

I have a request in to ASN to get a full list of networks carrying the game but I already know that it will be on:
MASN (Mid-Atlantic Sports Network) available in Baltimore/DC area as well as on sports package of DirecTV and Dish Network nationally, in HD.
WUCW 23.3 (3rd digital channel of CW in Minneapolis/St Paul (normally called Grit TV), not sure this will be in HD or not, guessing not.
Altitude 2 in greater Denver Area but not live, thats tape delay in the middle of the night.

People who think Denver/CC, or especially BC/BU would travel to the UP need to step out of the meth lab. SCSU/MN is more realistic, but still unlikely to happen anytime soon.

Just had a chat about this with SG. Some others we mentioned were: UConn-QU, RPI-Union, and SLU-Clarkson

BC/BU is completely unrealistic. I do see the possibility of DU/CC, but actually, its more likely they could pull off AFA/CC. The NMU/MTU fans wouldn't have to leave Colorado Springs.

The more likely pairings to actually pull off would be SCSU/UMD, SLU/Clarkson, RPI/Union, Quinnipiac/UConn, maybe something like Northeastern/New Hampshire.

I guess I spoke too soon. I was told during Scott's intro Milbury says "moving right along...moving right along...". What a joke. The same guy who coached a fleet of goons over his career is going to bash the last one left. What a joke.

I like John Tortorella. I like him more after finding this:

In other news MTU moved up to 15th in the USCHO Poll and debuts in the USA Hockey Poll at #14 after receiving votes the last few weeks.
