95th Season of Hockey- Michigan Tech Huskies 2015-2016 - Thread #1

Tech played a solid game, but BG controlled the final 2 periods and played with more urgency.
I was nervous every time Dufour, Spezia hit our zone.
Need the full 60 tonight and absolutely need the 2 points. Do not let the foot off the pedal tonight. BG will be much better tonight as well.

I also saw 2-3 hooks that should have been called on offensive rushes by Tech.

BG under Bergeron has always been a clutch and grab, obstruct as much as possible, play with an edge and force the refs to call them out on it - type of team, especially at home.

Play our game, push back smartly and play fast like we did in the 1st period.

My thoughts.
The fans' obscene chants were less than flattering to them.

You saw a different game than the one I attended. ;)
Last time you imagined that the B-G...S-U call-and-response was F-U.
What's your beef this time?

The only one I heard was the bs chant after the fans thought BGSU scored when Jamie covered a puck behind him.

Bill Muckalt's Tri-City Storm has claimed Carver Watson off waivers from Madison.

Big win - Mel's postgame with Dirk:

Proud/happy for our team, They come to play every night.
Took a lot of blocked shots and hits, played winning hockey
Brought up Reid's name today only 1 goal but team appreciates him
Maybe a break on 3rd goal, puck luck, wasn't sure how call would go, don't think stick was above cross bar
Great fan support here too
Jamie was on his game
We had a good week of practice, worked on some things for BGSU and LSSU weekends, really helped us
8 goals on road against great defensive team, great job by players
No Heinonen/Jackson, these guys did a great job to create tough choices for the coaches when they're healthy
The team is doing so many things right, need support from our fans next weekend

Big win for the Huskies tonight. Great job by the team to recover from the early goal in the first and not allow another goal. Jamie Phillips is now tied for 2nd all-time in wins for a MTU goaltender at 48 along side Garry Bauman. He's now 10 wins behind Bruce Horsch for the record. Great to see him recover from yesterday and today's start to get the win.

Nice win! They played great. 5 in 3 shorthanded goal, that in itself was outstanding. Get out and support your Huskies!

Well in light of tonight's win, last night really looks like a "bad tie" now. Those points are so critical in the standings and you can't just give away too many if you want to win the cup. I guess we're all BGSU fans now and hope they take exactly 3 pts vs MSU and make it a three team race for the cup again. I have a feeling we're all going to be regretting that UAA series at the end of the regular season. It would be a shame if Tech finishes the conference season with a .500 or better record against every team except UAA.

That Baltus goal tonight was sweet. Been a while since we've seen some nice hands like that. Too bad the BGSU broadcast team didn't show up for Friday night's game. Would have been nice to see two games with multiple cameras, graphics, etc. I guess even video teams "mail one in" every once in a while.

Looking forward there is now roughly a month left in the regular season. Tech needs to put up 8 wins and see if the other two teams might stumble once or twice. If Tech wins out and still doesn't win the Cup they will at least be rolling into the playoffs and hopefully put themselves in a good position to win the WCHA tourney and on to the NCAA tourney.

Well the Huskies may not be the top team I. Points for the WCHA but they're the highest ranked team in the conference by PWR. Impressive to see what this team has done against BGSU and MSU.

The CBS Evening News had a segment tonight on John Scott and the NHL's attempts to keep him out of the All Star Game. He said he has an engineering degree to fall back on when his NHL career ends.

Friday night was the actual "BGSU Broadcast Team." Last night was Buckeye Cable System's crew. They film most BG home games, but with Friday being high school basketball night, and the Toledo Walleye being home all weekend, they just didn't have enough crews for Friday.

In the most reserved I've ever been at games - because my daughters were with me - wT and I chant HOSER at Nell, as it was obvious he was headed to the bench and at that end of the ice (final words are "Take off, eh!") and it would be funny. No laughter around us, and some crusty old crumdgeon turns around an yells back "HEY *****HOLE, why don't you shut up!" Right in front of my daughter.
This is also the same old man hollering at Tech players all night.

To calm myself down, I yelled towards him - "So you're allowed to yell profanity and I don't get to say anything. Ok, sir. Message received. Nice lesson for the kids."
I let 2 minutes on the clock go by, then loud enough for everyone in the section to hear as people around us are getting up to leave (because they can't stay for the whole game apparently) "And I don't appreciate your language in front of my children or others, sir. But you have yourself a good night."

Outside of that and the student "hype guy" that needed to be taken behind the woodshed and beaten with the microphone he was already trying to jam down his throat....it was an enjoyable evening.

The Tech crowd was amazing. We were clearly more audible than the Bleacher Creatures throughout the game. At least 15-20% Tech fans at the game in a crowd of probably 3000-3500. The most you could hear of the Bleacher Creatures was the boos as Tech came on and left the ice.

At least halftime got a little bit of a chuckle out of a few.....sheesh.

I love the statement that Coach made in regards to the team's focus.
"We're on a mission and they just happened to be the next team in our way."
That is a great frame of mind. One they need to keep for the rest of the season.

Not all, mainly because we don't have 4 games against MSUM, tie-breaker A does not apply.

Currently, we lose on tie-breaker B, we have one less conference win.
We own tie-breaker C and currently D, so long as MSUM & BG split in their upcoming series - which would bring us back to even on tie-breaker B, using your scenario.

To answer your question, almost. :)

Ok, thanks. Hoping for a split next weekend between those guys.

Ok, thanks. Hoping for a split next weekend between those guys.

If the mavs and Huskies finished tied for first playoff seeding would first go to who had more wins in conference. Which could favor MTU since they have less ties right now.

One strange thing I noticed this season is that Vallis struggles to crack the line-up, but when he is in the line-up you usually see him getting power play time. It is interesting to see someone who is on the PP unit, struggling to make the line-up. I'm guessing the coaching staff feels the D-side of his game is not at the same level so there are better overall options for the lineup, but he has above average play under PP situations.

Also great to see Reid get that "eagle shorty" goal. If we can find another one or two guys to pick up their scoring a little, being able to put up four goals a night will lead to a lot of Ws.

I think we have seen others picking it up in the form of Steman for sure, with 3 goals on the weekend, and Gillies forcing some plays leading to goals. Need Neville to get going. He's great on the defensive end, need him to pay more attention to the offensive side during the game like Coach was talking about on Monday. Get him and CJ going, and we have four rolling dangerous lines.
MWHAHAHA!

I liked Blacklock's and Lucchini's tenacacity in the neutral zone and forechecking. They need to continue to do more of exactly that, so long as it's kept clean. Mason needs to learn where the line is as far as after whistle contact goes. Fortunate in the first period last night that we were not sending BG to a power play a few minutes after they scored.
