Alex Smith has committed to the Michigan Tech Huskies Division I program for the 2016-17 season.
The Flin Flon Bombers are very pleased to announce that 1995 born forward Alex Smith (Edmonton, AB) has committed to the Michigan Tech Huskies Division I men's ice hockey team for the 2016-17 season.
“I’m really excited for this opportunity and am looking forward to playing for the Huskies,” said Smith before he added, “but my main focus right now is winning a championship for the Flin Flon Bombers.”
Smith, who was acquired by the Bombers in the summer of 2014 from the Bonnyville Pontiacs of the AJHL, made an immediate impact with the team in his first season, winning Player of the Week honors early in the 2014-15 season, and finished up with 47 points (19g, 28a) in 54 games with the maroon and white.
This season, the 6’0, 190 pounder has lead the offense on most nights for the Bombers, leading the league in points with 69 (25g, 44a) putting up 21 points (8g, 13a) in the month of January alone.
“We feel that his two way style, along with his skating will make Alex a very successful collegiate player,” said Head Coach and General Manager Mike Reagan adding that Smith, who centres the first power play unit, also kills penalties.
“He produces on the power play, kills penalties for us and is one of the best in the SJHL in faceoffs. He’s going to be successful at the next level. Plus he’s a great guy, we couldn’t be happier for him.”
Smith, along with his Brandon Switzer (Brandon, MB) and Joel Kocur (Edson, AB) lead the team on most nights, contributes his success to his linemates.
“We have great chemistry and I want to thank those guys for helping me out this season, the way we’ve played this year has helped me get to where I am. It’s only a matter of time before they get a scholarship too.”
The Michigan Tech Huskies play in the WCHA with the likes of Alaska, Minnesota State and Lake Superior, and currently sit in fourth in the division with a 10-6-2 record tied with Ferris State. They play their home games at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena in Houghton, MI.

In other Flin Flon Bomber/NCAA news – Former Bomber goalie Simon Hofley (2013-2015) was named the Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the Week. Hofley led the Canisius Griffins to a three-point weekend against Holy Cross, posting a 1.41 goals against average and .968 save percentage in a pair of games. Overall, the freshman combined to stop 91-of-94 shots during the weekend series.
