29 per day

Re: 29 per day

More (and younger) people with alcohol will make it better? More booze, less drunk driving? More booze, less abuse of it?

But yes, the German and Scandinavian laws might be something to think about.
All I can say is that for me, drinking lost some of its appeal when you could just buy it legally at the store or (pay whatever the markup is) at a bar. In high school it was more the rebellious types who were drinking and partying and sneaking around getting alcohol, there was a certain thrill to that. By the time you're 21+ even the biggest squares are drinking and it's not really something that separates you from others (this was probably true even before I turned 21). Now it's kinda just a normal part of life and I'm less likely to over drink when I can just easily get it and do it whenever I want to rather than having limited access and overdoing it because the opportunity presented itself.

If I had to guess, something along those lines is part of why the lower drinking age works.

Then frankly, you're not the problem.

How do we keep it away from those with mental health issues (addiction) that can't handle it as well and may make bad decisions that affect themselves or others.

Now you've found some common ground. What are you going to do to solve that problem? No good solutions there, is there? Nope. Not really. Some people hide it well until BANG, tragedy.

Re: 29 per day

Wait.
I can take a run at the number ...

88000 alcohol deaths per year. 365 days per year.

That's 241 excessive alcohol use related deaths per day. (I'll kindly assume here the 29 related to driving are in the 241.)

I'd say 241 is about 2.5 times 96.

You just finished discounting suicides in the gun number, so let's get down to it. How many people are killed by someone else due to alcohol? If you want to discount suicides for guns then all those self inflicted alcohol deaths need to be discounted too. Give me a number.

Let's not mince or parse, take the top line numbers.

Both seem to be credible sources: 241 per day or 96 per day.

Universal healthcare

Sic, you're not going to like hearing this, but "socialism" is a way to fix this. A large increase in spending for health care (all aspects, preventative, urgent care, mental, etc.) to help identify and prevent those from abusing alcohol. Better spending on education.

Gotta make cuts somewhere, so that means that our Military Machine needs to be reduced. "But our veterans!" you wail. They will be beneficiaries to improved health care. They will find ways to not need a bottle to solve their problems.

A rising tide lifts all ships.

You assume a bit too far. The military is overbought right now. I'm for lean, mean and, well, a ruthless, only as a very last resort, military.

And yes, we've made a mess of our mental health care system. It's biting us hard right now. And unfortunately, too many vets need that portion of big health care.

Re: 29 per day

Canada classifies DUI as a felony and may ban anyone with a DUI conviction from entering the country for up to 5 years.
