29 per day

The Sicatoka

Kicizapi Cetan
Every day, 29 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver.

29 dead not bad enough?

How about societal impacts.

Excessive alcohol use led to approximately 88,000 deaths and 2.5 million years of potential life lost (YPLL) each year in the United States from 2006 – 2010, shortening the lives of those who died by an average of 30 years. Further, excessive drinking was responsible for 1 in 10 deaths among working-age adults aged 20-64 years. The economic costs of excessive alcohol consumption in 2010 were estimated at $249 billion, or $2.05 a drink.

Alcohol has become a scourge on our society. Tougher laws. Treatment programs. Nothing seems to work. How dare I say that? Even with those we still have:

  • 29 alcohol related vehicular deaths (drunks and innocents) per day
  • 1 in 10 deaths of those aged 20-64 related to excessive drinking
  • a quarter-trillion dollar economic cost in just 2010 related to overconsumption

We claim to care.

What's the answer.

Better public transit for the DUI issue. People having alternative methods to get home without driving tends to work in other countries with good public transit options.

As for the over consumption issue I'd probably lower the drinking age like Germany and figure out other ways to deal with it.

More (and younger) people with alcohol will make it better? More booze, less drunk driving? More booze, less abuse of it?

But yes, the German and Scandinavian laws might be something to think about.

And every day in America 96 people are killed with guns. Seems like a bigger problem by oh.....let's see....over 3 times. But we should probably ignore that.

The bar in Hunter, ND, burned down recently.
The nearest pub is Arthur, ND.
When's the next bus run?

The answer is pretty obvious: North Dakotans are being paid too well for the region if they have superfluous money. Cut their wages.

In your 96 you're including gun suicides (59 of the 96) which correspond to the "1 in 10 deaths of those aged 20-64 related to excessive drinking" (dare I say drank themselves to a suicidal death). My 29 per day figure is driving related only.

I don't have the number per day for the combo of driving plus the "1 in 10" factor.

Death penalty for any death from DUI.

No appeal.

Just shoot to kill behind the jail day after victim dies.

Then it may stop.

How many of your 29 are where the drunk person was the one killed? You want apples, let's get apples.

Re: 29 per day

Wait.
I can take a run at the number ...

Excessive alcohol use led to approximately 88,000 deaths and 2.5 million years of potential life lost (YPLL) each year in the United States from 2006 – 2010,

88000 alcohol deaths per year. 365 days per year.

That's 241 excessive alcohol use related deaths per day. (I'll kindly assume here the 29 related to driving are in the 241.)

I'd say 241 is about 2.5 times 96.

We end up shooting everybody who kills someone while driving drunk, and shoot everyone who kills someone with a gun, we're going to escalate those gun deaths in this country pretty quickly.

Nah. We'll just make the town drunks drive over those convicted of gun-related homicide. The numbers will balance out.

Irony :)
