2026 PWHL Draft

Here is what I think, so far, roughly...
1. Caroline Harvey
2. Abbey Murphy
3. Laila Edwards
4. Tessa Janecke
5. Kirsten Simms
6. Emma Peschel
7. Lacey Eden
8. Nelli Laitinen
9. Elyssa Biederman
10. Sydney Morrow
11. Issy Wunder
12. Sara Swiderski
Maybe in or near the 1st round, Petra Nieminen, relative veteran of Finland. Several outlets have more or less these names in some order for the top 10-12! There are a couple ECAC to WCHA transfers, Morrow and Swiderski, as that seems like one route for development. The picks with a certain amount of consensus about them are picks 1-3, Harvey, Murphy, and Edwards.

The draft order in which expansion teams will pick is not officially announced (I think). The top four teams in the Gold Plan, therefore picking in this order, are Vancouver, Seattle, New York, and Toronto. Last year, the expansion teams picked last out of the 8 teams in the draft.

I sure hope whoever drafts Edwards keeps her at F. I would move Eden up that list. Her intangibles are through the roof, not to mention she can score.

She did…. Ridiculous.
Taking her at projected 3 is also ridiculous.
Of course the media circus and instant hype would help any team that makes the mistake.

The league announced the draft order yesterday afternoon -
  1. Vancouver Goldeneyes
  2. Seattle Torrent
  3. PWHL Detroit
  4. PWHL San Jose
  5. PWHL Las Vegas
  6. PWHL Hamilton
  7. New York Sirens
  8. Toronto Sceptres
  9. Minnesota Frost
  10. Boston Fleet
  11. Ottawa Charge
  12. Montréal Victoire
From last year's entry draft after expansion, it had seemed the first 4 teams to draft this year would be Vancouver, Seattle, New York, and Toronto, the non-playoff teams in order of Gold Plan results. This year, though, there wasn't an expansion draft, and the entry draft has been ordered differently. All 6 rounds (72 picks) will have this order per the PWHL. Disappointing for this NY fan hoping for Edwards with the hypothetical pick order, though we will end up with a top-7 player.

And Likely (reported?) Las Vegas/Detroit Knight deal gives Vegas 3 and 5

Here's my (biased) first round draft prediction:

1. VAN – Harvey
2. SEA – Edwards
3. (DET/VEG) – Murphy
4. SJ – Eden
5. VEG – Janecke
6. HAM – Simms
7. NY – Brändli
8. TOR – Morrow
9. MIN – Wunder
10. BOS – Peschel
11. OTT – Laitinen
12. MTL – Holopainen

NY seemingly got screwed with their draft position. They need to trade up and get KK. If there ever was a draft with a generational player, she is it. Give up whatever you need to less OB to get the deal done.

I think NY could use a goalie - so I think they are sitting well at 7 - Yes they don't get KK unless the go to the top - but I don't see Vancouver giving that up.

edited: Changed 'NY needs a goalie' to 'NY could use a goalie'

Well, Detroit made the deal.
This probably is an example of why an argument should be made in the future that the actual position of the draft picks should be determined and announced well in advance. A 3rd overall for Knight is much different than a 9-12 overall. - Which I can only assume is where Detroit thought they'd be picking based on last years draft order.

Do the GM's actually make the picks or is it all just controlled by the league? Since the teams aren't independently owned it feels like the whole thing is constructed to drive attendance to make the balance sheet look appealing for a possible suitor to either start selling off teams or the whole league. After all that is what private equity firms do to make money on their investments.
