2024-25 Penn State Nittany Lions

Penn State wins this one by a score of 11-1. I lost track of who scored in the third, so overall: a hat trick from Grace Outwater (her first), two goals from Briana Brooks, and a goal each from McKenna Walsh (her first), Abby Stonehouse (her first), Stella Retrum, Nicole Hall, Karolina Hengelmuller, and Maddy Christian. Shots on goal were 65-14 for Penn State, and Stonehill took 4 penalties to Penn State's 1. I don't know what you take away from a game like this, but it was fun to watch.

Not Penn State-related, and sorry if I missed it, but does anyone know where Lindsay has been? I haven't seen her post for quite a while. I know she said she started up a girls hockey league in her area last year, so I'm sure that keeps her busy. I hope all is well.

Knowing nothing, as is often my case, my guess would be that she wasn't a fan of how things went down in some of the transfer "debates" over the summer. Things weren't all that civil in some of the discussions, and that has turned off more than one long-time contributor over the years. Like you, I hope that she returns at some point.

I was rooting for Penn State Friday, I was really hoping we'd have the opportunity to play you on Saturday. Hopefully down the road at some point. Good luck the rest of your season.

I am 100% on board with this post.

One disclaimer. Having taken most of the Summer of '24 off from USCHO, I don't have complete knowledge of these specific "debates." But I believe your critique applies to many issues that have arisen on the Board.

Further, it was absolutely appropriate for ZedLeppelin to make this inquiry on the Penn State thread. Lindsay's primary affiliation is Mercyhurst. As such, she's supportive of Women's Hockey in Pennsylvania, including Penn State. FWIW, she's also from NE Ohio. As such, she's supportive of Women's Hockey in Ohio, including Ohio State.

In short, she's everything a National Poster should be. Her interests and expertise go way beyond any single program. If Lindsay has really left for good, that's a big loss for USCHO. At the same time, if she's found another place to post that suits her better, more power to her.

Whatever the full story is, I wish Lindsay nothing but the best.

Syracuse is walking into Thon weekend. And it's a Thursday night opener in Happy Valley with the football team having the biggest game of the year against Ohio State.

Hey Zed! All is well. You all are very kind. And yes I am definitely a Laker for life, with a concurrent interest in hockey around the region, PGB. :-) Hope you are all well too.

I decided to go touch grass for a while after wasting a Sunday bickering on here one day. (Embarrassed smiley) But it’s all good, new days and such, and im still reading, appreciating the hockey knowledge, and the writing and the community of the 17 posters.

The Lakers look stingy on defense other than vs OSU, gotta figure out some scoring but we’ll see what they do in league play. 2 wins over ranked opponents, wish they had at least one more, but it’s a long season and they do face another ranked opponent in Penn State. RIT seems better this year. Got a rare Hockey East series against UNH too that they need to make the most of.

Non hockey wise for me it is a quite busy time of life. My kids got into travel softball and baseball. I spent hundreds of hours sitting at a field with my husband and father in law this spring/summer/fall watching the kids. Great times.

The rec hockey team is in season 2. It’s challenging, humbling, time consuming and fun. We have a picture of our team from last year mounted on the wall at the rink. It means a lot to me. Probably 20 rinks in the area and I bet only 3 have a girls team on the wall (Barons, Gilmour and Garfield). By the end of this year I hope there will be more pictures of girls teams in rinks around town.

A few part time girls teams sprung up around here thanks to some devoted hockey parents. There is a local small business called Ohio Hockey Project that helps drive getting boys and girls into hockey and recently partnered with the Monsters for some learn to play stuff. That is huge, I don’t recall programming like that here before. And he’s got Brianne McLaughlin and Shannon Szabados on staff which is unbelievable. I am hoping and praying that someone can get a girls rec league going at some point. I love my team but we need more rec girls, just like them.

Since the 15/16 season girls hockey in Ohio has grown 75% or up about 800 girls to 1900. Girls hockey Nationwide enrollment for the same time period is up about 28%. 15/16 was the 2nd year of the NWHL I believe, fall of 16 is when Muzerall came to Ohio State, and when a little non profit in Cbus called COGH started pushing girls hockey. The publicity from the 2017 threatened team USA boycott, and 2018 Olympic gold, followed by a successful drive for 5 straight world championships by Team USA in 2019, and 2 national championships for Ohio State. These events have indeed left a legacy. It’s great to see. And great to be back in the rink again.

It sure does get that way on here sometimes, doesn't it? Thanks for the update, and I do hope you'll post as Mercyhurst's season rolls on, because I think your experience as a D-1 women's hockey player brings a unique perspective.

And Mercyhurst is getting votes in the polls to start this season, so as always they're going to make things interesting in the conference - they always seem to peak when it counts. Scoring is something for Penn State to work on, too (you can't really count the 11-1 Stonehill game). I do like seeing RIT climb up from what was becoming a perennial spot in the basement, and they look like they're going to be fighting for a mid-conference spot this season.

Don't blink - those days are gone before you know it! I wish I still had little ones running around, but those little turds grew up, and now their kids have done the same. It's so disrespectful...

That's really cool that you started a girls hockey team. I never coached hockey, but I did coach a kids football team when I was stationed in Texas, and I loved every minute of it. It's great when the kids are eager to learn, and so rewarding when you see them start to click and really have fun with it. Penn State does camps for girls hockey, but I don't know if every D-1 school does that, too. If Ohio State does, that would be a great experience for your team (he says, knowing exactly zero about the logistics of doing that).

I'm very glad you're still among us!

Beyond that, I'll take a shortcut and enthusiastically endorse Zed's point-by-point reply.

It's game day - #12 Penn State opens up AHA conference play at home tonight and tomorrow against Syracuse. Both games are streaming live on BTN+. This is also a home weekend for the football team, playing Ohio State at noon on Saturday, so Friday could be a little busy on campus.

After one, Penn State is up 1-0 vs Syracuse, on a goal from Kendall Butze. Shots on goal are 11-6 for Penn State, and penalties are 1 for Penn State and 1 for Syracuse. Kind of a sloppy first period, and again with the too many passes (in my opinion) when a shot could be made.

After two, Syracuse is up 2-1 on Penn State. Shots on goal are now 16-15 for Syracuse, who outshot Penn State 10-4 in the second period. Penalties are 3 for each, including a game misconduct for Syracuse...which didn't matter, because Penn State took a "too many players" penalty on the power play. That period was embarrassing. As the stats show, Penn State is still trying to get fancy with passes that aren't working, instead of taking shots. Passes are usually not on target, and when they are the intended recipient can't handle it for whatever reason. Ugh...it just looks like no cohesion at all tonight.

Penn State wins in OT 3-2 on a goal from Briana Brooks. Shots on goal ended at 37-16 for Penn State (no shots on goal from Syracuse after the second period), and penalties were 6 for Syracuse and 4 for Penn State.

After one, it's 1-0 Penn State on a goal from Maddie Christian. Shots on goal are 13-5 for Penn State. Penalties are 2 for Penn State and 2 for Syracuse. The first period was all Penn State, and none of the fancy pass nonsense of last night. They're smothering Syracuse in the Syracuse zone and leaving them not many more options than just clearing the puck and dumping it into the Penn State zone. Much better look than yesterday.

After two, it's tied 1-1. Shots on goal are 26-16 for Penn State, and both teams have taken 5 penalties, including a 5-minute major/game misconduct for Tessa Janecke.
