2024-25 Penn State Nittany Lions

Penn State makes it a sweep by a score of 5-2, on third period goals from Abby Stonehouse, Leah Stecker, Stella Retrum, and another from Maddie Christian. Shots on goal were 37-18 for Penn State, and penalties were 7 for Syracuse and 6 for Penn State. That's the game Penn State should've played yesterday. Lauren Barbro was in net for this game.

Finally won a game one. Games at 6 pm during the school week remain a struggle. There was balanced scoring this weekend. Syracuse came to play. If PSU ever starts to click on all cylinders watch out.

Maddy Christian is leading the team in goals. Janecke and Lobdell are tied for the lead in assists. Lobdell is leading the team in blocks. Desa has been solid. The frosh have been contributing.

The team needs to get healthy with Vaslet and Garcia. Perhaps the weekend off next week can give those two time to get back to contributing to the team.

I really like Maddy Christian's game so far this season. She seems much quicker and more aggressive, and it's really helping fill the void from Mya Vaslet's absence. She got an extra shot of mojo from somewhere. I also like Karolina Hengelmuller's game, too - she's a defender who isn't afraid to step up at the offensive zone blue line and fight to keep the puck in the zone. Not always, but more than the other defenders, who start back-pedaling way too soon (drives me insane).

I thought it was interesting to see Kampersal put Lauren Barbro in net for game two against Syracuse, instead of Katie DeSa. It sure is a luxury to have three goalies who are each capable of playing a solid game in net.

That is a great observation on Hengelmuller. Stecker's versatility is helpful.

I felt stupid when the BTN+ guys were saying Leah Stecker was used as a forward last week, instead of her usual defender position. She's always jumping into the play, so I just thought she was having her usual offensive game. Her goal against Syracuse was all individual effort - she drove to the net, took her shot, got the rebound, and shot again and scored - no fancy passes, no unnecessary stuff, just grab and go with the puck. Penn State has a bye week, and then they're at home against Lindenwood...always chippy, so Janecke is probably licking her chops. :p

I found the rivalry series game in Vegas on NHL on the fly by chance and I watched the last four minutes of regulation. USA was down 4-2 and Zumwinkle had an awesome goal. And then there was a timeout. I was looking for Janecke and another girl was 15, Tessa evidently is 22. She went out with about 2 minutes and 20 seconds left and had a secondary assist to Knight. Then, much to my surprise, Knight and the other wing came off the ice and Janecke stayed on and took the face off and played the rest of the game. Janecke played the last two minutes and twenty seconds of the game. That's impressive.

Wakefield is a nice addition to the staff. She checks a box for experience in Canada and Europe which should help recruiting.

You read my mind - when I was going over Wakefield's bio, all her Canadian and Swedish experience really stood out, and I'm hoping that means she's got lots of contacts in both places.

My computer decided yesterday that I had become too comfortable, and decided to make me reinstall everything, so I missed yesterday's early game with Lindenwood. Instead, I was playing "forgot my password/reset my password" on a gazillion sites for a lot longer than I liked, losing my mind in the process.

Anyway, after the bye week last weekend, Penn State was at home again yesterday and beat Lindenwood 3-2 in OT, with goals coming from Tessa Janecke, Maddy Christian, and the OT winner from Karley Garcia. It was as physical as expected, and Penn State outshot Lindenwood 51-10, but Lindenwood's goalie obviously had a great game. Still no sign of Mya Vaslet, so her injury must have been pretty serious - I wonder if she's going to end up with a medical red shirt for this season.

Today's game two is even earlier, streaming on BTN+ at 1:00 Eastern.

karolina hengelm?ller was also out yesterday. Did not see her at all, have seen Mya in the tunnel or after games, not on crutches or anything which seems like a positive sign. Hoping for a bigger win today, always love an OT victory, but outshooting like that should lead to a crushing, not a close one.

After one, Penn State is up on Lindenwood 1-0 on a goal from Maddy Christian. Shots on goal are 16-4 for Penn State, and Lindenwood took the only penalty. That period was all Penn State...I don't know how Lindenwood managed to get four shots on goal.

After two, Penn State is up 5-1 on second period goals from Grace Outwater, Katelyn Roberts, and two from Tessa Janecke. Shots on goal are 33-8 for Penn State, and penalties are 3 for Lindenwood and 1 for Penn State. Not much to say...Penn State was all over Lindenwood.

Butze with a goal and 5 assists!!!! Garcia with the OT winner yesterday after returning to the lineup. Christian remains red hot. Outwater continues to be productive.

Penn State takes the sweep with a final score of 7-1, with third period goals from Stella Retrum and Kendall Butze. Butze ended the day with 5 assists and the goal. Shots on goal were 45-18 for Penn State. Penalties were 8 for Lindenwood and 6 for Penn State. Lindenwood was never in this game, and didn't really look like they cared all that much.

Penn State has had great luck with their NAHA recruits and is adding another, Megan Keller. Karly Garcia, Tessa Janecke and asst coach Makenna Newkirk all have the NAHA background.

PSU seems to be making strides on the recruitment of International players.

Desa has been solid. RMU is next up.
