2024-25 Penn State Nittany Lions

I thought today's game had a later start, but nope...it's a 2:00 (Eastern) game today. #12 Penn State is at home against Robert Morris, who is currently in the AHA basement (which surprises me for some reason). Being a home game, it's streaming on BTN+.

Mya Vaslet and Karolina Hengelmuller are still out of the lineup: https://x.com/PennStateWHKY/status/1860020422374289869

After one, Penn State is up 3-0 on goals from Stella Retrum, Maddy Christian, and Brianna Brooks. Shots on goal are 17-4 for Penn State, and penalties are three for Penn State and one for Robert Morris. Even with all the time on the powerplay, Robert Morris just isn't generating anything, and I think Penn State has more shorthanded shots on goal than Robert Morris has on the powerplay. .

Snow and Puddifant graduated, the two solid St Lawrence transfers and they obviously had a lot to do with RMU's surprising success last year. Don't underestimate those grad transfers is the lesson I guess. The Brooks, Christian and Outwater line is cooking. PSU seems to do better with earlier starts on Friday for whatever reason.

After two, Penn State is up 5-0 on second period goals from Tessa Janecke and a shorthanded goal from Maddy Christian. Shots on goal are 30-11 for Penn State, and Penn State took three penalties to Robert Morris's two. Robert Morris was a lot more aggressive to start the second period, but Penn State is just too fast and playing aggressively themselves.

Penn State takes game one by a score of 5-0. Shots on goal finished at 43-20 for Penn State, and penalties ended at 5 for Penn State and 4 for Robert Morris. Penn State dominated this game from start to finish (understatement), and they were faster and stronger end to end. Robert Morris made things chippy as the clock ran down, but that was about all they had today.

Dominant win by Penn State.

I also noted that Ben Halford is no longer with PSU -- he wasn't announced pre-game, he's wasn't listed on the line chart, and he's no longer listed on the PSU web site. This is a change since last week. Guess Penn State is looking for a goalie coach.

After one, Penn State is up 1-0 on a goal from Alyssa Machado. Shots on goal are 15-11 for Penn State, and penalties are 3 for Penn State and 1 for Robert Morris, including a 5-minute game misconduct on Stella Retrum for something not even the announcers clarified or saw, so no idea what she did. Robert Morris decided to play today's game, and it's a physical one already...tons of chippiness. Notably absent today is Karley Garcia, out with an injury, so now Penn State is playing without Garcia and Retrum and still without Mya Vaslet. We'll see how they adjust for the rest of the game, but so far Robert Morris looks totally different than they did yesterday.

(Edit: Retrum's game misconduct was for "butt ending", so apparently she speared someone)

After two, Penn State is up 2-0 on a second period goal from Kendall Butze. Shots on goal are 32-14 for Penn State, and penalties are 4 for Penn State and 3 for Robert Morris, including a 5-minute major of their own. Penn State played more like themselves in the second instead of getting caught up in the chippiness of the first period. A couple more goals would be nice.

I just read the bio on Halford, he is also an assistant coach at Wilkes men's D 3 and runs goalie camps. He had a great impact on the program with multiple goalies winning goalies of the week and more. I think it is a loss as having good goaltending is a necessity. However, the new assistant is a nice get for the program and I think she will help with the recruiting and bring new ideas for practices.

Brenneman gets hurt and Burke gets CHA goalie of the year. Bothun gets hurt and Desa has been solid for two years. Spring got a goalie of the week. Halford should put on his resume that he coached three different girls that all received goalie of the week in one season.

Penn State finishes the two-shutout sweep of Robert Morris by a score of 4-0 on third period goals from Grace Outwater and an empty-netter from Tessa Janecke. Shots on goal ended at 49-24 for Penn State, and penalties ended at 6 for Penn State and 5 for Robert Morris. Got to hand it to Robert Morris for at least making it a game, unlike yesterday, but they just didn't have anything much offensively.

Janecke sent Jersey Phillips for a ride. Janecke is dominating faceoffs. Butze is on a hot streak.
Desa with two doughnuts. There is a lot to like about the weekend!

Outwater rookie of the week and tied for the lead in pts for frosh in the NCAA. Desa gets goalie of the week. Showcase in Nashville is next up. Merrimack and ? Happy Thanksgiving Zed.

Happy Thanksgiving Zed.

Thank you, Reddington - Happy Thanksgiving to you, too!

I really like Grace Outwater so far. She looks like she's getting more comfortable and confident as each game comes. I always wonder how a freshman is going to adjust to D-1 play, and she's done a good job of it.

This Nashville tournament looks okay, with Clarkson, St. Thomas, and Merrimack. I hope Penn State ends up getting to play Clarkson, just because I like them in a good hard challenge, rather than the kind of lopsided game they got against Stonehill. I hope Karley Garcia and Karolina Hengelmuller are back for it, but then again Kampersal may want to wait for games that count the following weekend against Mercyhurst.

With Mya Vaslet only having played four games this season before her injury, is she eligible to medically redshirt the rest of the year?

Well, cool stuff - the 2024 Smashville Women's Collegiate Showcase in Nashville on Friday and Saturday will be streaming on YouTube, so that's a new one (for me, anyway). I'm glad we'll be able to watch a tournament that's not in a venue normally covering women's hockey. I'm not sure about links for Saturday's live stats, but the schools should have those on game day Saturday if you want to look them up.

A nice chartered bus to the airport to fly to Nashville to play at the same arena that the Predators play at should play well with recruiting. I would also like to see a Clarkson matchup. it's hard to believe that PSU shut out Robert Morris twice and went down a spot in the rankings. I'm not sure on Vaslet. Less than five games qualifies for a medical redshirt or at least it used to.

It's scoreless after one at the Smashville Tournament, and live stats are non-existant, so who knows? Merrimack is a lot quicker than I expected, and they kept up with Penn State for that period, so we'll see how long they can keep up that pace.

After two, Merrimack is up 2-1 on Penn State. Tessa Janecke got the goal for Penn State. Merrimack was all over Penn State that period, and their game plan seems to be to swarm whoever has the puck, and it's working. Penn State is really missing Karley Garcia and Karolina Hengelmuller on defense.

Merrimack gets an empty-netter to win this one 3-1. It's hard to believe they're at the bottom of Hockey East, but they were all over Penn State from the start and making things difficult. Lots of blocked shots, too.
