2024-25 Penn State Nittany Lions

The offensive scoring is there, but PSU will have to work on the stifling defense they have been known for.

It seems like I say this a lot in recent seasons, but I'm not a fan of the defensive style overall. I think they are way too quick to give up the offensive zone and start backpedaling way too soon, when a little more aggression at the blue line could keep plays alive for the offense. When a defender does choose to pinch at the blue line, it works and the play stays in the offensive zone, and I'm yelling at my screen, "See? It works!"...ugh. But that's why I'm not a coach, because there's probably some logical reason for that style of defense, and it works for them.

All in all a fantastic first half of the season. Kampersal is doing a nice job with 3 players out with injuries.

Penn State is the only unbeaten team in AHA play at the holiday break. They had a big gap to close when Mya Vaslet went out in the fourth game with an injury. No, Vaslet is not a Tessa Janecke, but she was a big enough impact player that her absense required a lot of shuffling of lines. She was on an upward trajectory and really prime for good things this season, too, so I feel badly for her. Kampersal has done a great job of rebalancing lines. The same goes for managing a defense that is missing two key players to injury. This holiday break comes at a good time, and hopefully Santa brings a big bag of healing goodies to the team.

Speaking of Tessa Janecke, she's at 131 career points now, six points away from Natalie Heising's program record. Heising set the record over five seasons - Janecke is halfway through her third season. It was great to see her not take a single penalty all weekend at Mercyhurst.

Being halfway through the season, and really bored today, I'm going to take a shot at a freshman report card:

My easy favorite freshman forward is Grace Outwater, who is fourth in scoring behind only Janecke, Maddy Christian, and Katelyn Roberts, and within four points of Christian and Roberts with one fewer game being played. She settled in to D-1 play pretty quickly, and is a good aggressive player with a deceptively good shot. She's not super-flashy, just good with the puck.

Abby Stonehouse came in with a bit of hype, but she hasn't found her scoring touch in D-1 yet, with only 2 points on the season so far. She's absolutely a hustler and a fast player, always jumping into a scrum and battling on the boards and not afraid to bang it up with anyone. She has no shortage of energy, for sure...sort of like another Alyssa Machado, minus the scoring touch. She'll get there.

Nicole Hall is another strong forward a little short on scoring, but no shortage of hard play. Like Stonehouse, she is quick and not afraid to mix it up along the boards, and also like Stonehouse I think she will be fine once she settles into D-1 and learns the parts of her game that work to bring out the scoring. She's got the hustle, the fight, the strength, all of that...she just needs to find what in her game works best.

McKenna Walsh is fun to watch, which is probably a little rude to say, because she's fun to watch due to being so little (barely over 5 feet tall...yikes). With players getting bigger every year, that doesn't seem fair to her, but here she is. She's a scrapper, too. I don't know what to say about her, because she's not a game changer with scoring or anything, but she really leaves it all out on the ice when she plays. She is definitely valuable for the role she does play, and she plays it with gusto.

There are only two freshman defenders - Grace Tullock and Taya Macdonald. I don't remember ever hearing Tullock's name on a livestream, so she must be doing okay, or at least not getting smoked. There isn't a single thing I can think of to say about her game, because I can't say I've noticed anything...good, bad, or neutral, I just haven't noticed her. On the other hand, Taya Macdonald has made her presence known, and is settling nicely into D-1 play. She's listed at 5' 11" tall, and it's nice to have a big defender on the roster. She's even got points, so bam...she's a keeper. I'd like to see her work on moving the puck a little quicker, but that will come. It's going to be fun to watch her game develop over her time at Penn State.

$100 to anyone who actually read every word of this babbling (okay, not really, but bless you for your endurance).

Great write-up. I notice a little bit different things offensively which is likely the new assistant coach bringing some new ideas to the table. In particular, the neutral zone regroup going wide and a stretch pass for a breakaway to Christian. Those are some new wrinkles.

Brooks has really anchored the second line.

Lobdell, Butze and Stecker have really stepped up on D.

Machado makes sense with Janecke and Christian as not only is it a scoring line, it is a phenomenal forechecking line.

TIme to get Retrum going in the second half of the season. Roberts has been consistently good.

Just did a little checking up on current stats and former players. Janecke is now tied with Christian for goals. Butze is leading the d in scoring.

Gough and Mackay are playing in Europe. Mackay is another former NAHA player. PSU seems to have a really good pipeline from NAHA going.

Bemiji with Bothun should be interesting.

After Nashville, I don't think PSU can take anything for granted. Rebounding with two wins against Mercyhurst was clutch.

Bemidji with Bothun should be interesting.

Josie Bothun better be in net for that game...she's not the starter at Bemidji, but I hope the coach lets a grad transfer face her old team one last time. It's not like the game matters to either team, so let this face-off happen. I loved having Bothun at Penn State, but I hope they light her up. You know that handshake line afterwards is going to be a hug fest.

Penn State has the Gophers the next day, so yikes...best of luck to them.

The Nashville tournament was embarrassing - I hope they learned something from it! Those conference points at Mercyhurst were so important, and are going to matter down the stretch, so good on them for grabbing those before the holiday break. After the Bemidji/Minnesota weekend, Penn State is at home vs RIT, and RIT is playing like they mean it this season, so I'm glad Penn State gets a weekend of work after the holidays before playing RIT.

I sure hope Karley Garcia and Karolina Hengelmuller are healthy for the second half of the season. The defense really needs those two back in the mix. As far as Mya Vaslet goes, who knows? If she's going to take a medical redshirt for this season, I'm sure there must be a deadline for doing that, but I don't know what it is. Alyssa Machado, Brianna Brooks, and Tiffany Hill are all on their grad year this season, so maybe a redshirt for Vaslet this year is good for the team, getting her back for next season. What a way to spend her senior season this year...ugh...gotta feel for her.

Happy holidays to you, and to the rest of the women's hockey fanatics here, too!

Since everyone is on the holiday break, I hadn't thought to take a look at the AHA standings, and wow...who saw it being like this at the break?

1) Penn State..........(8-0-0)
2) Syracuse............(5-3-0)
3) RIT....................(4-3-1)
4) Mercyhurst.........(4-4-0)
5) Lindenwood........(2-6-0)
6) Robert Morris......(0-7-1)

Mercyhurst in fourth place? Syracuse in second place? Man, that's just crazy. Mercyhurst always seems to come on strong in the second half of the season, but right now they're four games out of first place, and I'd be really surprised if this Penn State team gave up those four games. RIT is the only AHA team Penn State hasn't faced yet, so we'll see them for two series in the second half.

Sooooooooo...wow, never would've seen the conference standings looking like this at the break!

I' d add RIT has beaten Colgate out of conference. I'm right there with you on not guessing the order of the standings.

PSU had another d commit from Pennsylvania.

Butze is at 17 pts, Lobdell at 12 and the surprise is Stecker at 11. That is solid production for your d. The two frosh d are hanging in there. Garcia and Hengelmuller are hopefully on the mend.

Penn State is back in action this weekend in the East-West Showcase at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis. They face Bemidji State on Friday at 2:00 (Eastern), and Minnesota on Saturday at 5:30 (Eastern). Both games are streaming live on BTN+.

The one interesting storyline of the weekend is that Penn State (hopefully) will face their former standout goalie Josie Bothun in net for Bemidji, if the Bemidji coaches let Bothun face her former teammates for the final time in her career. I really hope they let that happen, even though Bothun is not the starting goalie at Bemidji. This will be the first time Penn State has ever played Bemidji State. In the second game, it will be the fifth meeting between Penn State and Minnesota, with Minnesota having won the four previous games.

I don't care who Penn State plays - the break is over and we're back to some hockey!

After two at Ridder Arena, the game is tied 3-3 vs Bemidji State on goals from Abby Stonehouse, Grace Outwater, and Leah Stecker. Josie Bothun is not in net for Bemidji State, which is a shame. I can't find live stats for the game, so...um, the game is tied 3-3.

Penn State takes this one 6-4 on third period goals from Grace Outwater, Tessa Janecke, and Alyssa Machado. Shots on goal were 28 for Bemidji and 26 for Penn State, and penalties were 6 for Penn State and 4 for Bemidji. Penn State took a late penalty that gave Bemidji a 6-on-4 for the final 1:40 of the game. No sign of Josie Bothun on the Bemidji bench, so I'm guessing she's hurt again, but that would've been fun to have her face Penn State today.

Unfortunately, according to her Instagram it looks like she retired due to another injury. Super Sad to see.

Good win today but lots to clean up, gave up 3 PP goals.

PSU cannot really get excited about beating a team with Three wins, but considering this could have been a brutal loss...... The news on Bothun is unfortunate and explains why she hasn't played since way back in the beginning of the season. Tullock had a beautiful pass to Outwater. I think Penn State really misses Vaslet. She is incredibly hard to play against. I noticed that lines were jumbled up after the score was 3-1 which is good. You just never know what you are going to get after the break.

After one, Penn State is up 4-0 vs Minnesota on goals from Grace Outwater, Stella Retrum, Abby Stonehouse, and Maddy Christian. SHots on goal are 27-10 for Minnesota, and Penn State took the only penalty.

After two, Penn State is up 5-1 on a second goal from Stella Retrum. Shots on goal are 22-16 for Minnesota, and penalties are 2 for Penn State and 1 for Minnesota. Abby Murphy has gotten away with a textbook crosscheck right in front of a ref, and then whatever you would call for just punching someone in the chest...again, right in front of a ref, and no call.

Retrum is from Minnesota and Christian is also and are leading the way today. Roberts had a hustle play to assist on the second Retrum goal. My guess is Stonehouse went home to Ontario and had some skills sessions with her favorite instructor as she is also heating up. Garcia is back from her injury as of yesterday.

I wonder if Janecke was taunting the crowd with her jersey like the announcer said or if she was acknowledging the little kids sign saying “our cousin is the Penn State goat”

fun stuff either way.

Murphy looks like such a cry baby to come and kick a Penn State players stick that she is holding after the player got rocked. Some days I think there should be fighting in women’s hockey lol

I'm sure Murphy is not used to having two players who can bounce her around like Janecke and Machado. Machado is just relentless.

Penn State beats Minnesota 6-2 on a third period goal from Tessa Janecke. Shots on goal ended at 34-25 for Minnesota, and penalties were 5 for Minnesota and 4 for Penn State. This one ended with Karley Garcia getting some payback on Abbey Murphy, holding her until the penalty was called, and then tugging her down to the ice on her way to the box. Good for her, because Murphy was dirty on Garcia a lot in this game, including the punch earlier.
