2024-25 Penn State Nittany Lions

Penn State's highlight reel from the win over Minnesota: https://x.com/PennStateWHKY/status/1876641987379753130

Grace Outwater was named the AHA conference Rookie of the Week, Katie DeSa was named the AHA conference Goalie of the Week, and Tessa Janecke was named the Penn State Student-Athlete of the Week.

Outwater leads the nation in freshman goals, and is second in the nation in freshman points. Janecke is two points away from tying Natalie Heising's career points record at Penn State...as a junior. Heising did it in five seasons.

Heising was the better scorer - Janecke is the best player in PSU history so far. Desa is having a good year. One thing is for sure Kampersal is able to sit goalies on the bench for a couple of years and then the goalies seem to simmer and then when given a chance the goalies really produce. I noticed Hall on the power play on Janecke's goal which is a new opportunity for her. The Brooks line now has Retrum and Roberts.

Penn State hosts RIT tomorrow and Saturday for an AHA conference series at home. Both games are being streamed on BTN+, Friday at 2:00 (Eastern) and Saturday at 1:00 (Eastern).

On paper, this should be a Penn State sweep, but RIT has beaten Colgate and tied St. Lawrence so far this season, so there's a little extra pep in their step this year. I'm glad to see RIT getting better, because the stronger the conference teams get the stronger the conference gets.

I always forget that former Penn State player/Penn State grad Jordin Pardoski is on the bench at RIT with former Penn State coach Celeste Brown. Pardoski was one of the originals when Penn State started D-1 play in 2012-13, and was here for the opening of Pegula Ice Arena. Unfortunately for her, she had to play her freshman season at the old gloomy Greenburg Ice Pavilion while Pegula was being built. Anyway, just another reminder of how small a world this sport is.

After one, Penn State is up 1-0 vs RIT on a goal from Abby Stonehouse. Shots on goal are 17-5 for Penn State, and Penn State took the only penalty. This one is all Penn State so far.

Two back hand goals, the first top shelf and the second on a redirect. Brooks should have received the secondary assist on the play as the play was a nice give and go from Brooks to Roberts to Brooks. Roberts is changing her game a bit without Janecke and has had some playmaking assists since the break and it's nice to see her playmaking ability shining through. Stonehouse is on a nice run in scoring since the break.

After two, Penn State is up 2-0 on a second period goal from Brianna Brooks. Shots on goal are 33-13 for Penn State, and each team is at 2 penalties.

Penn State takes game one by a score of 3-0 on a third period goal from Brianna Brooks, her second of the game. Shots on goal were 48-18 for Penn State, and penalties were 4 for RIT and 2 for Penn State. There's not really much to say with this one - Penn State controlled the game from start to finish. They're back at it tomorrow at 1:00.

Lines have been jumbled again to start the game which is a bit of a surprise, but hey why not? The d and goaltending are not getting enough credit in the recent success. Is Kampersal trying to keep Celeste from trying to analyze tendencies by changing lines?

After one, Penn State is up 1-0 vs RIT on a goal from Katelyn Roberts in her 100th game. Shots on goal are 10-3 for Penn State, and RIT has taken the only 2 penalties. RIT came out more aggressively today, but they're just a bit outmatched overall. They've had some offensive zone time and some chances, but Penn State just stays on the gas.

Penn State just had a Janecke goal with an assist from Stonehouse called off. Celeste wins the challenge. The Janecke Roberts Stonehouse line could of had two. I think that was the first line to start the season. Kampersal has not used that combo since way at the beginning of the season.

After two, Penn State is up 3-1 on goals from Brianna Brooks and Abby Stonehouse - two more Penn State goals were called off, too. Shots on goal are 21-13 for Penn State, and both teams have taken 2 penalties. In her 100th game today, Tessa Janecke has tied the all-time scoring record at Penn State, with a period left to go in this game.

Penn State takes the sweep by a score of 3-2, in a game that almost got away from them because of penalties. Shots on goal were only 25-19 for Penn State, after having 48 shots on goal yesterday. RIT came to play, for sure, and they look better than they have in years. Penn State improves to 19-4-1 overall, and 10-0-0 in AHA conference play.

Penn State moved up to #9 in this week's USCHO poll, with Quinnipiac and St. Cloud State both dropping down a spot. It's one of those poll spots that usually give voters more than one choice, so it's good to see Penn State wearing a top ten number this week.

I think there is room to go up more - maybe to 7. If PSU can hit the 25 win mark it bodes well for future recruiting. I think the new coach will help with the Euros and Canadians. I see a new recruit publicized from British Columbia. Lobdell is quietly having a nice year and was rewarded with d player of the week and Stonehouse after a quiet start to the year has been rewarded with rookie of the week and has been on a tear to start the New Year.

Syracuse is on tap and historically plays PSU hard.

Penn State travels to Syracuse for a weekend series on Friday and Saturday. Unfortunately, that means no BTN+ livestream, so you're stuck with FloHockey ($$$) if you want to watch the series.

Mercyhurst swept Syracuse last week to move back into second place in the AHA. Only two points seperate those two right now. Mercyhurst takes on Lindenwood this weekend and should come away with a sweep, so their hold on second place looks pretty safe. Mercyhurst is three games and a point away from Penn State in the standings:

(28) Penn State
(18) Mercyhurst
(16) Syracuse
(13) RIT
(08) Lindenwood
(07) Robert Morris

Let’s go Hurst! Appreciate the summary. I assume Penn State has the reg season locked up.

I don't know about that. Syracuse and Lindenwood have both taken Penn State to overtime already this season, and both Penn State games against Merychurst were close, so the rest of the regular season isn't a wash. As long as Penn State is consistent, they're in good shape for winning the regular season title, but then there's the conference championship tournament, and you know Mercyhurst is always ready for that.

Tatum White is playing her fifth year at Syracuse. Allie Kelly, a transfer to Syracuse, is going for the record for all time NCAA save leader and had 65 saves against St Lawrence this year. Syracuse seems to have made improvements after a disastrous last year. I'm not sure what happened to Robert Morris, however last year might have been an overachieving year. I agree with Zed on Mercyhurst always being formidable.

I needed a hockey game tonight, so I paid for the FloHockey feed, since Penn State is on the road a lot for the rest of the schedule.

Anyway, it's scoreless after one at Syracuse. Shots on goal are 15-4 for Penn State, and both teams took two penalties. If it weren't for the penalties, Syracuse would've never seen the Penn State zone in the first period. Their goalie is standing on her head so far, so kudos to her.

It's still scoreless after two, mostly because Penn State can't stay out of the penalty box. They've taken five penalties to Syracuse's two. Shots on goal are 23-13 for Penn State, but this Syracuse goalie had another great period.
