2024-25 Penn State Nittany Lions

And still scoreless after three, so it's heading to overtime. Shots on goal are 37-18 for Penn State. The Syracuse goalie set the NCAA career saves record in the third period.

Katelyn Roberts finally gets one past this Syracuse goalie for the OT win. Shots on goal ended at 41-18 for Penn State, and penalties were 6 for Penn State and two for Syracuse. Tessa Janecke got the assist on the OT goal, so she is now the Penn State career points leader.

Syracuse has 5 grad players and it has made a difference. I'm not going to say Kelly is like Selander but how about Selander lite. PSU almost got Kellied. It's good to see that PSU has the moxy to play in such a close game on the scoreboard. Props to Roberts and to the D and Desa with another shutout.

Game 2. Three zip after two. Outwater, Janecke and Hall. Walsh had an assist which is nice to see. Desa in net again. Still waiting for a Lobdell assist or goal. The watch continues.

Penn State travels to Lindenwood this weekend for an AHA conference series on Friday and Saturday. Both games are streaming on FloHockey, but I don't know if I'd pay a FloHockey price if you're only doing it for this series against Lindenwood. Friday's game is at 7:00 Eastern, and Saturday's game is at 3:00 Eastern.

Penn State is 12-0-0 in AHA play and in first place, Lindenwood is 2-9-1 in AHA play and in the basement. The only player I know of at Lindenwood who could be a concern (if the stars align or something) is forward Morgan Nietzke, their most productive player. I'm not going to try to get a read on Lindenwood, or make up some imaginary upsides for Lindenwood in this series...sometimes they show up, sometimes they don't, and about the only consistent thing they do is hit people, so you just go out and play your game and see what they do about it.

Penn State has a couple of interesting storylines heading into the weekend. Grad student Lyndie Lobdell is one point away from setting the women's hockey program record for career points for a defender.
Tessa Janecke, who already set the women's hockey program record for career points last weekend, is now only three points away from the overall (men's and women's) hockey career points record at Penn State. That's some good stuff from a player who is still just a junior.

I'm ready for some hockey - I've had a very crappy week of dealing with Covid, but the worst of that is over, finally. I coughed so much my ribs hurt, I lost every bit of my appetite, I couldn't sleep, and I got so stuffed up...yuck. Happily, my appetite is back with a vengeance.

Nietzke had fantastic Sophomore and Junior years. Not so much this year and really will have to turn it up a notch if she wants to be All CHA.

Lobdell leads the team in blocks and is second in scoring for D. Butze is first in scoring and third in blocks. Tullock the frosh is second in blocks.

Janecke leads the way in overall scoring and Christian and Roberts are tied for second.

I think Desa has 8 shutouts.

Lindenwood and another plane trip there is no gimme for PSU.

After one at Lindenwood, Penn State is up 1-0 on a goal from McKenna Walsh. Shots on goal are 10-7 for Penn State, and surprisingly there have been no penalties called so far. Both teams look jittery, but it's the first period of the first game, so things should settle down.

After two, Penn State is up 2-0 on a second period goal from Katelyn Roberts. Shots on goal are 27-16 for Penn State, and Lindenwood took 3 penalties to Penn State's 1.

Penn State takes game one 3-1 on a third period goal from Stella Retrum. Shots on goal ended at 40-26 for Penn State, and penalties were 5 for Penn State and 4 for Lindenwood. Credit to Lindenwood for showing up to play for 60 minutes - not always a given with them.

PSU has to remember to not roll around in the mud with Lindenwood tomorrow. Janecke, Roberts and Stonehouse remained a line There is still no sign of Hengelmuller.

After one, Penn State is up 1-0 on Lindenwood on a goal from Tessa Janecke. Shots on goal are 13-5 for Penn State, and there are no penalties so far.

On a sidenote, I didn't notice Lyndie Lobdell not coming out at the start of the game, but apparently she got a 10-minute game misconduct after yesterday's game ended, and had to serve it to start today's game. I don't know what she did to get that. Long after yesterday's handshakes were done, I did see her on the boards with the refs, talking about something, and the one ref finally started waving his finger at her for some reason, so she must have talked her way into a misconduct.

After two, Penn State is up 3-0 on goals from Maddy Christian and Grace Outwater (shorthanded). Shots on goal are 25-14 for Penn State, and Penn State took 4 penalties to Lindenwood's 1.

Penn State sweeps Lindenwood by a score of 4-0, with a third period goal from Nicole Hall. Shots on goal ended at 48-20 for Penn State, and penalties were 6 for Penn State and 3 for Lindenwood.

RIT and Syracuse split. Mercyhurst pounded Robert Morris for two.

It's still too early to call, but with each team having six games remaining (and 18 available points), Penn State can win the regular season title with any combination of regulation wins, OT wins, and OT losses that gets them 10 more points (3 points for a regulation win, 2 points for an OT win, 1 point for an OT loss). 10 more points will put them out of Mercyhurst's reach. The worst Penn State can do is finish the regular season in second place, but that would take a serious meltdown.

(39) Penn State
(30) Mercyhurst
(20) RIT
(20) Syracuse
(09) Robert Morris
(08) Lindenwood

Next season, Delaware joins the conference to start their D-1 program. Is that when Lindenwood is going to bail on the AHA and join the WCHA?

Looking at awards for the CHA - my guesstimate will be: Janecke player of the year. First team Janecke, Alvarez RIT, Upson Mercyhurst and either Christian or Roberts PSU. It is possible that the Fifth year player that did a grad year at Syracuse gets in there, Saarela. But, I'm thinking second team for her.
The goalie of the year should be Desa based on all her awards so far.

The d will be either Lobdell or Butze and a big ? Mark. Could it be two d from PSU?

Rookie of the year will be probably be Outwater.

Second team will likely have Nuutinen and Nietzke and ?

Lastly, St Thomas is way better than estimated after they spanked UMD twice. The only bad loss PSU has right now is Merrimack in my opinion.

Robert Morris is up next. Six games left in the regular season for PSU and the others and the above analysis could change.

This weekend's series at Robert Morris is streaming on Sportsnet Pittsburgh (never heard of it). It's $18.00 a month, but that will get you the Robert Morris series and the RIT series at the end of the regular season. Why a Pittsburgh streaming service is doing a Rochester series is anyone's guess, but that's what it says on the Penn State schedule.
