2024-25 Penn State Nittany Lions

#12 Penn State is at home this weekend for a Friday/Saturday series against Dartmouth. This will be the season opener for Dartmouth, so there's not much to scout as far as how their season is going so far. Well, they haven't lost a game yet, so there's that :p. Both games are streaming on BTN+.

We'll see if Penn State senior Mya Vaslet is back from her knee injury, but I kind of hope she sits out this weekend, too, so she isn't rushing things - it's not exactly a season-defining series.

After six games, five different Penn State players have scored two (or more) goals, so that's a good sign. Alyssa Machado's back-to-back goals in 14 seconds last weekend at Union were the fastest back-to-back goals by the same player in program history.

PSU seems to always do better at Friday afternoon games rather than Friday night games when at home. Hopefully, this can get corrected. Kampersal did a radio show recently.

Stella Retrum is back on the top line tonight with Tessa Janecke and Katelyn Roberts. Mya Vaslet is not in the lineup, and Katie DeSa is in net.

No score after one period, shots on goal are 9-5 for Penn State, and penalties are 2 for Penn State and 1 for Dartmouth. Penn State is blazing fast tonight, but they need to shoot the puck a lot more.

This one is still scoreless after two. Shots on goal are 23-12 for Penn State, and penalties are 3 for Penn State and 2 for Dartmouth. Dartmouth found their forecheck in the second, which has given them more time in the offensive zone, but Penn State has theirs, too. The freshman Czech goalie for Dartmouth is having a great game.

Penn State takes the first game by a score of 2-0, on goals from Nicole Hall and an empty-netter from Tessa Janecke. Shots on goal ended at 44-15 for Penn State, and penalties were 4 for Penn State and 2 for Dartmouth. The band actually showed up again, so that was nice to see. This game was fast, and one of the stars of the game has to go to the Dartmouth freshman goalie...she was outstanding.

The band was there and so was the Nittany Lion! Really nice crowd -- it's parents' weekend which helped and there were a fair number of Dartmouth fans in attendance as well. Penn State controlled the game but the Dartmouth goalie kept them in it until the 3rd period.

Awesome on the band and a shutout by Desa. Shout-out to the d. Looks like the band is going to be a regular thing That's just phenomenal for the atmosphere.

After two, it's Penn State up 3-1 on goals from Stella Retrum, Katelyn Roberts, and Grace Outwater. Shots on goal are 25-8 for Penn State, and Dartmouth has 4 penalties to Penn State's 2. I missed the entire first period and half of the second, thinking the game started at 3:00 when it started at 2:00...derrrrrp. From the half a period I saw, and the shots on goal totals, Penn State is all over Dartmouth today.

Penn State sweeps Dartmouth by a score of 4-1, with a third period goal from freshman Grace Outwater, her second of the game (and the first two NCAA goals of her career). Shots on goal ended at 38-13 for Penn State, and penalties ended at 6 for Dartmouth and 5 for Penn State. Penn State really dominated this game, and just like last night that Dartmouth goalie was outstanding.

Butze has some beautiful passes on goal two. Brooks is really good at skating to open ice waiting for things to develop. Penalties need to be cut back if PSU wants any success next weekend.

Penn State and Cornell have been playing against each other regularly as of late and should be yet another interesting game. The attendance of 1,404 at the last game is stunning for this time of the year. Free tickets this year and or the free skate afterwards could be explanations. Is there anyone in the East getting crowds that are similar in number?

After one, Cornell is up 1-0 on a goal with 8 seconds left in the period. Shots on goal are 10-8 for Penn State, and each team took a penalty. Things look pretty even so far.

It looks like Vaslet is still out. That's a big loss. PSU has 13 blocks through 2. I notice Bergmann is in net for Cornell and is a USA hockey regular.

After one, Penn State is up 2-0 vs Stonehill on two goals from Grace Outwater. Shots on goal are 28-4 for Penn State, and each team took a penalty. About the most interesting thing about this game is that Penn State grad Maeve Connolly is doing her fifth year on this Stonehill team. Yup...that's about as exciting as this one is.

After two, Penn State is up 6-1 on second period goals from Maddy Christian, Briana Brooks, Stella Retrum, and Karolina Hengelmuller. Shots on goal are 48-9 for Penn State, and penalties are 3 for Stonehill and 1 for Penn State. The score could be a lot worse for Stonehill if Penn State would just shoot the puck instead of trying so many extra passes. Lauren Barbro was goalie for Penn State in the first period, and Annie Spring was goalie for the second.
