2024-25 Penn State Nittany Lions

No idea what happened yesterday, I thought the game was in the bag. On to today, let's hope PSU can protect this 2 goal lead.

Penn State takes game two by a score of 4-2 on an empty-netter from Lyndie Lobdell, for a split at UConn. Shots on goal finished at 35-29 for Penn State, and penalties ended at 5 each. UConn sure has a way of making things scary late in a game, but Penn State was on the gas for 60 minutes. Mya Vaslet took what looked like a very painful knee injury that ended her game...hopefully it isn't season-ending.

#12 Penn State is on the road this weekend for a Friday/Saturday series at Union. Both games are streaming on ESPN+. Last weekend at UConn, Penn State finally found its scoring touch on the powerplay, and also got their second shorthanded goal of the season. UConn pushed Penn State, and that was good for them, and the only real downside was losing Mya Vaslet to a knee injury (no word on how serious it is). This is a fast and gritty Penn State team, and it should be a fun series to watch this weekend.

They posted a video at practice yesterday with Mya mostly behind the camera doing the interviewing that showed Mya on crutches at the end. She's almost certainly out for the series against Union, unfortunately. I'm hoping it's not too serious and she'll be back in a few weeks!

Conference play doesn't start until October 31, so I hope she doesn't rush things during this out-of-conference part of the schedule.

Union has a new coach. Sciba left to join Fargo on the New York Pro Team. Sciba was a good coach so I think Union not having him has to be a plus for PSU.

After one, Penn State is up 1-0 at Union on a goal from Katelyn Roberts. Shots on goal are 15-5 for Penn State, and Union took 2 penalties to Penn State's 1. This game isn't even close...Penn State has controlled play from the start, they are much faster than Union, more aggressive than Union, etc etc. It's only been one period, but it looks like the only thing that could beat Penn State in this game is Penn State.

After two, it's Penn State up 3-2 at Union on goals from Tessa Janecke and Alyssa Machado. Shots on goal are 23-9 for Penn State, and penalties are 3 for Union and 2 for Penn State. One thing that bothers me from Penn State: the defense is so reluctant to pinch at the offensive zone blue line, choosing instead to start back-pedaling. I know it can't always be an aggressive pinch on every play, but so many are given away when a pinch at the blue line could've kept the play in the offensive zone. At worst, a hard pinch would've stopped any push from Union...ugh. That's my cheeseless whine for the night.

Penn State takes game one 4-2 on an empty-netter from Tessa Janecke. Shots on goal ended at 34-13 for Penn State, and penalties were 4 for Union and 3 for Penn State. That was a lot closer than it should've been, and the Union goalie really stood on her head. Kudos to her, and to Union for adjusting after the first period to make this one a game.

The team needs to clean up the body checking and roughing penalties. You don't want to roll around in the mud with Union. Union is playing hard for their new coach.

That would be nice - there was a lot of what looked like payback hits yesterday, from both sides, and it was hard to figure out what the refs were going to let go.

Jeff Kampersal said more than once in the preseason that Penn State wants to be known as a team that isn't going to get pushed around by any other team. That's kind of a given, coming from any team in the women's AHA, as this has always been a physical conference. Kampersal specifically mentioned Tessa Janecke and how teams tend to key on her, and give her a little extra grief to try and get her off her game. Sometimes it works because she doesn't usually let anything go, so she ends up in the box, and she has exactly zero issue with getting in anyone's face. It depends on the game and how it's going, but Janecke does need to work on seeing when a team is setting her up to take a penalty. I have to admit, though, that I like that she's as talented as she is and at the same time doesn't take sh*t from anybody. Just manage the payback a little better.

Union really adjusted well after the first period yesterday, and got themselves into the game. The first period looked really bad for Union, but they settled in and gave Penn State a run for the rest of the game. Penn State still really controlled the play and looked a lot faster, but it got more interesting than it should have been. It should be another good one today!

After one at Union, Penn State is up 3-0 on goals from Lyndie Lobdell, Maddy Christian, and Briana Brooks. Shots are tied at 11, and penalties are 3 for Penn State and 1 for Union. Union's first period looked better today than it did yesterday, but Penn State is really on the gas today.

After two, it's Penn State up 3-1 at Union. Shots on goal are 25-17 for Penn State, and penalties are 4 for Penn State and 3 for Union.

Penn State takes the sweep of Union by a score of 5-3 on back-to-back goals from Alyssa Machado (14 seconds apart). Shots on goal were 34-25 for Penn State, and penalties were 5 for Penn State and 3 for Union.

Barbro is from the Schenectady area so I'm sure it was great for her family to see her get a game. Fifth year Senior Annie Spring needs a game now too. Desa has been doing great building off of last year. I think Spring received goalie of the week against Dartmouth last year and now Dartmouth is next on the schedule.

How about Machado stuffing the stat sheet this weekend? Glad to see her rewarded for how hard she plays.

I've always liked Alyssa Machado and how hard she goes every time she hits the ice. She's played that way since she first got here. Three goals and two assists is quite the reward for all her hard work this weekend! I also really like how Maddy Christian is looking this season...she found an extra gear somewhere during the off-season.

Good call on Christian. There were some new names in the box score which is a big positive. The social media stuff is a great recruiting tool so it is good to see that type of content reappearing again.
