2024-25 Penn State Nittany Lions

One hour to game time vs RIT, and not a peep from Penn State about the game, or if there's going to be live stats, or anything else. FloHockey has the game, but it's a $30 monthly pass.

Well, isn't this great - Flohockey was happy to take my money to watch a livestream they listed on their broadcast schedule, but they're not really even doing today's game. Bang up job, Flohockey. And this is the streaming service that the conference was so proud to team up with.

I went up to the game, 7-0 win goals from Outwater, Stonehouse (2), Hill (2), Vaslet, Garcia. They did a 3v3 5 minute period after regulation and then a shootout which RIT won 2-1 after about 12 rounds (I did track who scored and missed if anyone wants that haha)

Lines as best I could tell were:
Stonehouse Janecke Roberts
Retrum Brooks Outwater
Hall Vaslet Machado
Christian Hill Walsh

Each goalie played a period, 38-9 on shots before the OT period.

I'm sure I missed something so if you have any questions I can try to answer best I can, otherwise first game on Thursday night.

Thanks for the update! Interesting that Stonehouse & Janecke were on the same line. We are looking forward to the game on Thursday! Hopefully they'll get a good crowd for the banner raising.

Yes, many thanks for the game recap!

I'm going to guess Janecke, Brooks, Vaslet and Hill as centers? I guess Stecker is back to playing D this year at least for now. Is Walsh redshirting this year or did she redshirt somewhere else? I'm not surprised that Retrum was peeled off Janecke and Roberts, to see if she can help another line with scoring. I see Vaslet and Machado are together again as a line and that won't be fun to play against.

I know it was game one, but were you able to get a feel for how the freshmen fit into D-1 hockey?

I don't claim to be an expert in hockey in any way, really only got into it because it's the only sport my father would go with me to, and I ended up getting invested over the last 3 years. But from my limited knowledge, I thought at least Stonehouse looked pretty legit, Outwater had some moments as well. You'll see me at all the games though yelling at the ref because I certainly don't understand what makes every penalty a penalty :)

#12 Penn State opens the regular season tomorrow (6:00 Eastern) and Friday (3:00 Eastern) at home against #13 Northeastern, with both games streaming on BTN+. They faced each other to start last season, too, when Northeastern was ranked #5, and split the series, with Penn State losing 1-0 and winning 2-1.

Penn State lost very little offensively to graduation, and added some good freshman offensive potential, particularly Grace Outwater and Abby Stonehouse. So as far as offense goes, they are pretty much intact from last year's championship season, but now with some added spice, too. Defensively, they only lost Alva Johnsson and Maggie MacEachern, and added two defenders with good size: Grace Tullock at 5' 9", and Taya Macdonald at 5' 11". I would expect if Kampersal recruited those two defenders, it means they are the kind of physical players that he likes, and they should fit right in with an already solid defense.

The roster this season has 12 forwards and 7 defenders - four full lines of forwards, and three full lines of defenders, with one spare. Katie DeSa returns in net, along with grad student Annie Spring and junior Mankato transfer Lauren Barbro.

Is Walsh redshirting this year or did she redshirt somewhere else?

Walsh is no longer listed as a "redshirt freshman" on the roster --> she had not taken a redshirt year anywhere else so I guess plans have changed and she is playing this year. She played in the scrimmage and is now listed as a "freshman" on the roster. As Zed noted, the roster is pretty short as it is: 12 forwards and 7 defenders.

Looking forward to the home opener tomorrow!

It's game day! Finally, the 2024-25 season is starting, and it's streaming on BTN+ tonight and tomorrow. This should be a good series with Northeastern. I'm really anxious to get a look at the new players, and see how they look with the linemates they've been matched up with. Here are the video and stats links:

Posted line chart for Game #1 (pretty much the same as for the scrimmage against RIT):

Starting goalie: DeSa

Forwards: Roberts-Janecke-Stonehouse
Hall-Vaslet-Machado
Retrum-Brooks-Outwater
Christian-Hill-Walsh

Defense: Butze-Garcia
Hengelmuller-Stecker
Tullock-Lobdell

Extra skater: Macdonald

After one, it's tied up 1-1 at Penn State. Katelyn Roberts got the goal for Penn State on a beautiful one-timer off a faceoff. Northeastern had 4 penalties and Penn State had 2. Shots on goal are 6-5 for Penn State. Penn State had more time in the Northeastern end, and now they just need to settle down a little and make their plays happen.

After two, Northeastern is up 2-1. Both teams are at 6 penalties apiece, and Penn State leads the shots on goal by 17-15. Penn State played half of that period on the penalty kill. Katie DeSa has made some great saves, but these penalties have to stop (or get called equally...he says, in his biased voice).

Northeastern wins this one 3-1 on a late empty net goal. This looked like a typical first game of the season. Penn State had chances, but Northeastern played a really good defensive game. For being a first game, it sure looked like these two teams have a history and don't like each other, but they've only played one other series...so hmmmm. There were plenty of flashes, but I guess it should be expected that not everything was clicking yet. I'm not going to over-analyze a season opener...both teams played hard, both teams had chances, and Northeastern took advantage of theirs.
