2024-25 Penn State Nittany Lions

I have to say I am surprised at the outcome. Let's hope for the best. On paper and gelling live are two different animals. Kampersal is good at game two adjustments. There is an influx of new players and it may take time to have everything running as it should.

Penn State was dominating possession but not able to take advantage of their offensive opportunities -- I'm optimistic that will improve with time. There were way too many penalties, without those this game might have had a different outcome. And the band was there for the home opener!

I also spotted Allison Coomey & Melissa Samoskevich in attendance -- tonight was banner raising for last year's championship team so it was nice Coomey was back for that.

Penn State and Northeastern close out their series this afternoon at 3:00 (Eastern). We'll see if Jeff Kampersal makes any adjustments to the lines for today. Last night, late in the game, he moved Stella Retrum back up to the top line in place of freshman Abby Stonehouse, reuniting the Janecke/Roberts/Retrum top line from last season. Here are links for the BTN+ livestream and the live stats.

Having the band there at the opener is fantastic! Janecke and Roberts have carried over that chemistry from last year. Back to the basics to win: 20 blocks, .94 save percentage and three goals.

Here are today's lines - a little shuffled around from yesterday:

Retrum-Janecke-Roberts
Hall-Vaslet-Machado
Outwater-Brooks-Stonehouse
Christian-Hill-Walsh

Butze-Garcia
Macdonald-Lobdell
Hengelmuller-Stecker

After one, it's Northeastern up 1-0 at Penn State. Shots on goal are 5-4 for Penn State, and penalties are 1-1. Shots on goal are way down from Penn State's average last season, and that's a testament to Northeastern's smothering defense. Penn State got some great looks in the period.

After two, Penn State is up 2-1 on Northeastern. Shots on goal are 17-13 for Penn State, and Penn State took the only two penalties of the period. Tessa Janecke got the first goal on a rocket, and then she set up a highlight reel shorthanded goal from Maddie Christian. Okay, and then Janecke took her second penalty, but hey...she scored. :)

Penn State makes it a split with a 2-1 win over Northeastern. Shots on goal ended at 25-18 for Penn State, and penalties were 3 for Penn State and 1 for Northeastern. This looked like the Penn State from last season, and a lot better than they looked yesterday. Katie DeSa was a stud in net again.

Christian has speed and it was impressive to see her be able to jump into the play. It's not easy to keep up with Janecke. Looks like Christian earned her way into more pk time.

Lorelai Nelson, a forward out of Edina high school in Minnesota has committed to Penn State for 26. This is a very good pickup for them.

I watched some highlight videos of Lorelai Nelson, and she's got some good hands - you're right, she looks like a good pickup for Penn State.

#12 Penn State is at #9 UConn for a Friday/Saturday matchup between two reigning conference champions. Both games are at 3:00 Eastern, and both are streaming live on ESPN+.

In other Penn State news, junior forward Tessa Janecke has been named to her fourth Team USA Rivalry Series roster (https://gopsusports.com/news/2024/10/3/janecke-named-to-team-usa-roster-for-november-rivalry-series). The series will be played November 6, 8, and 10. Good news: that's a bye week for Penn State, so Janecke won't be missing any Penn State games.

However, if (if?) Janecke makes the roster for the Rivalry Series being played on February 6 and 8, she will miss Penn State's final regular season series against Mercyhurst, which will likely have implications for regular season final standings and conference tournament seeds. On the plus side, Penn State isn't a one-dimensional team, so they have plenty of players who can step up and cover Janecke's absence.

It's scoreless after one period at UConn. Shots on goal are only 7-4 for Penn State, and Penn State took two penalties and UConn took one. Penn State has controlled the flow of this game so far, but both defenses have been good at shutting things down.

Desa has been looking good. On another note, I see Bothun has recovered from her injury and is playing for Bemiji and getting playing time. That's great to see.

After two periods, Penn State is up 1-0 on a goal from Stella Retrum. Shots on goal are 12-10 for Penn State, and penalties are now 3 for Penn State and 1 for UConn.

UConn takes the first game by a score of 3-2. Shots on goal were 23-19 for Penn State, and penalties were 4 for Penn State and 3 for UConn. Penn State was up 2-0 halfway through the third period and somehow let this one get away from them. Penn State was the faster team, and I couldn't tell what went south for the last half of the third, other than UConn deciding to turn it up.

After one at UConn it's still scoreless. Shots on goal are 13-6 for Penn State, and Penn State has taken 3 penalties to UConn's 1. UConn had a better first period than they did yesterday, but like yesterday both defenses are clogging things up. Maddie Christian has really sped up her game this season...just had to point that out...and she's blocking shots, too.

After two, Penn State is up 3-1 at UConn on goals from Maddie Christian, Katelyn Roberts, and a shorthanded goal from Tessa Janecke. Shots on goal are 24-15 for Penn State, and penalties are 4 for Penn State and 3 for UConn.
