2023 - 2024 SEASON : Boston College

I think it is more BC couldn't keep up with the recruiting until recently.

You must admit the talent and depth this year is the difference. Yet if BC is not careful, they could be one and done in the NCAAs if they have a relapse like today when UMass scored 3 goals in 3 minutes.

UMass got a break on one of the penalties instead of a major they only got a 2 minute minor. The ref review according to BC radio team should have been a 5 minute major because it was a head shot, used his elbow and he left his feet.

It's been a long time since BC had legit team for the national title. 2012 is already 12 years ago and getting old. We're all getting old and old timers like me want to see a title if possible before I crook.

The post 2016 season exodus of underclassmen leaving early had a multi-year spillover effect and set BC back for a significant period of time. That played a big part in the downturn.

Ryan Leonard was once of course considered almost a lock to go to UMass. Ouch, that has to sting for them seeing him own their ass this weekend.

It would take a colossal collapse for BC to not get the overall #1 seed.

Seems crazy that this is how it's looking given that there is still a chunk of games left. Maybe my only concern would be that BC has made it through the toughest part of the schedule. The remaining schedule is "easy". I just hope the team doesn't fall into that trap and keeps the pedal to the metal.

Also, while being #1 overall is great, BC has been lined up with an 8/9 of Qunnipiac/Minnesota for a while now. I would prefer avoiding that if at all possible! I know you play who you play but those are two experienced teams. I'd rather be lined up with basically any other pairing than that.

We'll have to see what things look like when playoffstatus updates their numbers with this result but this should lock BC into a top 2 PWR spot now. We may have just put UMass's NCAA hopes 6 feet into the ground and this team should take great pride in that.

Co-sign. Sure, I like seeing Hockey East get a lot of teams in but if BC delivered a knockout blow to their tournament chances I'm ok with it! Carvel has helped play into the fandom by bitching about the officiating after the game I guess. Tough look for a program that's supposed to be tougher than that. They now appear to be super soft and just want to blame the refs. Maybe don't hook a forechecker near his neck while you're protecting a one goal lead in the 3rd period. Such an easy call but all they want to do is cry because they simply cannot beat BC.

UMass crowd, hockey frontrunners with heads shaped like basketballs.

Tough weekend for them losing to LaSalle. BC hoops on the other hand is as highly ranked in the advanced computer rankings in some time now. They're not great but it's nice to not be a complete dumpster fire of a program at this point in time.

the 15 minute video breakdowns on twitter were high comedy.

Still quite a way to go to determine who is at 8/9 but remember you would only have to play one of those two if you get by #16. The other 3 top seeds would supposedly have to play the 5,6 or 7 seeds so playing an 8 or 9 would be preferable.

Completely agree regarding UMass fans being total clowns (apologies to the few real fans)

I’d also much prefer Q-Minnesota to be the 7-10 matchup in BU’s regional

I was sitting beside a fan the other night when they beat the U. He was a 95 grad and seems to think the program was set back when Flynn refuse to accept this trio of local kids. The problem of low academic scores was questioned of the three and they ended up not coming to BC. Schoonie Penn in protest transferred out to PSU. Gary Williams went on to Maryland and won an NCAA.

I admire the fact you remember this story or if someone told you it they got a few details wrong (not that is matters). This was under Jim O'Brien/Chet Gladchuk (who is somehow still an AD at Navy). The President at the time? Leahy took over July 31, 1996. I am too young to remember exactly what happened. I can't recall if this was Leahy making a stand or if it was a carry over from Monan. From wiki:

However, O'Brien began running into problems getting his recruits past the admissions office after star recruit Chris Herren was kicked out of school in 1994 for drug and discipline problems; he eventually transferred to Fresno State.[citation needed]

During 1995–96, at least three prospective recruits were denied admission despite easily meeting NCAA standards. When two Boston-area recruits were turned down in November 1996, O'Brien nearly resigned.[3]

He ultimately left for Ohio State after the 1996–97 season and took nearly all of his players with him, including star freshman point guard Scoonie Penn.[citation needed]

O'Brien subsequently sued Boston College for slander and breach of contract, suggesting racial bias may have played a role in why one of his recruits was denied admission.[4]

**Al Skinner then took over the program in maybe the worst shape it's ever been and did a tremendous job. Love Al.

JOB and Scoonie went on to the Final Four a few years later. Very bad time for BC athletics, in the news for the wrong reason. There were some racial overtones to the blow up. Not sure what happened to the lawsuit.

Jim O’Brien never should have been hired at BC. He did a terrible job at St. Bonnie’s and was about to be fired. Bill Flynn hired him over the objections of the search committee who wanted Jim Calhoun from Northeastern. After two disastrous seasons it was Chet Gladchuk who actually saved JOB. The issue with the 3 recruits was that JOB offered them scholarships without giving their transcripts to admissions. It was all JOB’s fault for not following standard procedures that every coach followed.

Chet reorganized the entire athletic department and expanded Alumni Stadium. He had the plans already in place for the indoor football field and the baseball complex. Enter Bill Leahy who told Chet that no further athletic facilities would be built with university funds. He forced Chet out and replaced him with GDF. Chet hired, Tom O’Brien, Al Skinner, Jerry York, Cathy Ingelse and Peter Hughes. GDF forced all of these coaches out except JY.

Go Eagles!

OK some things to report according to updated PlayoffStatus numbers.
- BC is now the first team that has locked up an NCAA bid with a 100% chance even if they lose out.
- 86% likelihood they are the #1 overall seed and 97% likelihood of top 2. BU has the greatest chance of catching BC as they are 10% likely to take the top spot. Both will likely be placed in Providence as the closest regional. North Dakota's disastrous weekend at CC has made this slightly more interesting in that if ND was #2 BC would not have to worry much about being placed in Providence but BU jumping them changes that dynamic somewhat.

BC has not done squat in 12 years in the postseason so I'll believe it when I see it.

ps - the tears coming UMass Amherst today are amazing.

Why would the top 2 overall seeds be placed in Providence?

GDF tried to fire JY over a secretary that York wanted to retain. But someone told GDF it's not a good idea. GDF was another sh**sh** by himself and another reason BC athletics went down hill in other varsity sports. A coach won a lawsuit over BC and BC had to settle for her unjust dismissal. My sister who worked for the coach never forgave him and would never shake his hand at meetings formal or informal. Jags was let go because he interviewed for a Jets job and was told if you do, you're gone. The day Leahy retires BC will hopefully have a president interested in BC athletics and give more support.
