2023 - 2024 SEASON : Boston College

The announcers were totally pro UMass and honestly that’s fine for ESPN plus. Bc does a good job with announcers for these games as gallantly is pretty even handed. Just once I wish they’d let rish and powers loose on the tv broad cast. Those two are fantastic. And can’t let it go without saying the Beanpot tv announcers are garbage. They are so obviously pro bu it’s painful.

The announcers are usually the home team announcers on ESPN +. That’s the case with BU and PC home games. The PC announcers were good tonight

Gallanty is absolutely terrific. The dude that did the BC-BU game on the first night from Conte is also really good; I feel like he's done a lot of Umass games and assumed he was the normal Umass guy but maybe not. Either way, the guys tonight were absolute bozos and I almost feel bad for them. And the one time a guy correctly pointed out that the crosscheck penalty was weak and not a crosscheck some former Umass player in the booth is like absolutely good call lol.

I haven't said this about any other announcing crew but you guys are spot on. The UMass guys tonight might be the worst to ever do it.

I believe Tyler Murray is the normal UMass guy but because he did the UNH-Maine game for the game of the week we were subjected to those imbeciles tonight.

I silence the ESPN video and listen to Rish and Powers. Sometimes you have to tweak to synchronize but it's worth it.

Just got home from the long drive back. Looking forward to Sunday's rematch in the home and home. Keep the pedal on the metal.

I don't have ESPN+, so I didn't watch. Regardless of how it played out, a 5-1 win with an empty netter on the road against UMass is an excellent result. Glad in particular to see that Leonard took a cheap shot and didn't retaliate and instead scored a PPG to stick it up their keister. That's a sign of maturity.

Expectations were and are high for this team, but at 22-5-1 they are meeting them to this point, Beanpot aside. Looking forward to Sunday.

Right, with the youngest team in college hockey... and the 2nd toughest schedule to date. It's kind of ridiculous.

Playoffstatus has them I believe 95% locked into a 1 seed and after last night a very high likelihood of a top two overall (80%) which should make them the easy choice for the Providence regional. Their RPI of .6216 is some serious stuff and they have a solid gap to the next set of teams.

Stay healthy.

Carvel impresses the heck out of me but boy what a stupid challenge on the play where the Umass player grab a BC defender's arm and pulled both of them down (the announcers said slew-foot lolololol) and then held onto the BC players stick under the arm for 10 seconds. We need to make coach's challenges more impactful and just make it a penalty if they lose a challenge. The timeout, while nice, is a very easy chip to throw on the table to try to find a 5-min major potentially, which is potentially a massive game-changer.

In the BC-BU game at Conte BU used their timeout in the first period as well. However, they asked for a challenge later in the game. After the review was taken, it was declared not a major. BU was then called for a 2 minute penalty for delay of game for asking for the review. So, I guess you still can call for a review even without the timeout left but if it does not go your way you will get the 2 minute penalty. It does not seem that it goes like football where you cannot challenge unless you have a timeout.

So the NCAA has adapted this rule:
93.7 Team Timeout Request/Coach's Challenge - A coach may challenge a ruling in accordance with Rule 93.4. If a coach's challenge is unsuccessful, that team's timeout will be charged the first time it occurs in a game. The second and subsequent times a play is challenged and not overturned, a bench minor penalty for delay of game shall be assessed. If the team has already utilized their timeout for any reason, a bench minor penalty will be assessed on the first challenge of the game

The difference between the NHL is the use of a timeout for the first challenge and the use of a 2 minute minor for all unsuccessful challenges beyond the second one. The NHL charges a double minor beyond the second one.

Strange game. Won another weird one.

Does UMass have the dumbest, worst fanbase in the league? Sure seems like it. LOL. Feel bad for Carvel, that fanbase doesn't deserve him.

We'll have to see what things look like when playoffstatus updates their numbers with this result but this should lock BC into a top 2 PWR spot now. We may have just put UMass's NCAA hopes 6 feet into the ground and this team should take great pride in that.

UMass crowd, hockey frontrunners with heads shaped like basketballs.

The first half of the game BC was bebopping and scatting all over the Umass zone. Then Fowler let in one I think he would want back and the tables turned. All of a sudden it is 4-3 Umass, the penalties did Umass in. Nice to see Armstrong get a tip in, came just at a time when we were back on our heels. Umass coaching staff was pissed off about the penalties in the third that gave BC a two man advantage. It was a clear hook on the first one and the second was a stupid penalty by Mercuri (his second of the game)for a leg whip on Fowler way behind the play. Mercuri is a good player but a bit out of control at times, first penalty was for unsportsmenlike conduct for jamming Fowler after the whistle. Carvel should be reaming out that kid instead of whinging to the ref.

OK some things to report according to updated PlayoffStatus numbers.
- BC is now the first team that has locked up an NCAA bid with a 100% chance even if they lose out.
- 86% likelihood they are the #1 overall seed and 97% likelihood of top 2. BU has the greatest chance of catching BC as they are 10% likely to take the top spot. Both will likely be placed in Providence as the closest regional. North Dakota's disastrous weekend at CC has made this slightly more interesting in that if ND was #2 BC would not have to worry much about being placed in Providence but BU jumping them changes that dynamic somewhat.

BC has not done squat in 12 years in the postseason so I'll believe it when I see it.

ps - the tears coming UMass Amherst today are amazing.

It would take a colossal collapse for BC to not get the overall #1 seed. That being said it appears that the winner of the CCHA tournament would be the likely 16 seed. Even a surprise winner in one of the other conferences would most likely be ahead of the CCHA champion and possibly even the Atlantic Hockey champion. Both Holy Cross and RIT are above all CCHA teams and one of them should be highly favored to win Atlantic Hockey. Providence is BC's likely destination. Wouldn't it be interesting to see BU, Quinnipiac, UMass and Holy Cross out in Springfield?

FF in 2014 and 2016 is better than squat in my book. Tough to win it all every time you get to the post season.

I think it is more BC couldn't keep up with the recruiting until recently.

You must admit the talent and depth this year is the difference. Yet if BC is not careful, they could be one and done in the NCAAs if they have a relapse like today when UMass scored 3 goals in 3 minutes.

UMass got a break on one of the penalties instead of a major they only got a 2 minute minor. The ref review according to BC radio team should have been a 5 minute major because it was a head shot, used his elbow and he left his feet.

It's been a long time since BC had legit team for the national title. 2012 is already 12 years ago and getting old. We're all getting old and old timers like me want to see a title if possible before I crook.
