2022 NCAA Tournament

So many snarky one-liners going through my head but I will refrain because it is not fair to the people actually associated with Utica hockey (players, coaches, parents, alumni, professors) to make them due to one Internet creep.

Hats off to UNE. I thought they played a great team game, very responsible defensively, and they have a tremendous goaltender. The unity on that team was evident.

UNE moving on to Lake Placid. CCC to have another representative in Lake Placid as it did four years ago in Salve Regina. CCC is a top D3 conference in Men’s Ice Hockey. They had 4 teams this year that could’ve competed with anyone. Congrats Nor’easters. Represent the CCC with Pride.

2-0. Final.

Perennial.

What a game by UNE...not an easy place to go pull out a road win...never mind when it's the NCAA quarterfinal. Kudos to the Nor'easters...and congrats on their first trip to the "Phrozen Four". That's a heartbreaker for Utica.

Wasn't paying close attention on the craziness late in the second (heard the play by play but wasn't looking at the screen). I think Ray was saying it was a reversal...but it seemed like it was a straight "no goal" call from the officials. Anyone see what happened there...did it go in?

Before I head out for a Juicy Lucy before heading over to the Augsburg arena, it is justifiable to ask how a "perennial national contender" can't win or score a goal on home ice against a team that according to some shouldn't even be in the tournament. Good thing for AQs.

Go Nubbies!

I was watching the ref and I saw an emphatic No goal call sign the whole time.

It was an immediate wave off by the refs. Ray called it a goal, so that's why you may have thought it was a reversal.

I, too, thought it was in. Upon re-watching it many times, you can't tell for one main reason -- the puck was in the air, and from the angle of the camera, there was no way of knowing it broke the plane. You simply can't tell when the puck is in the air in that situation than if it was on the ice. it may appear to be over the line (which it did), but in the air, it doesn't mean it did cross the line.

The ref was right there on the line and immediatley waved it off. The only way to truly tell was to see an overhead camera shot. Which of course a streaming service won't have. Video reviews only occur starting in the semifinal round.

[SUB]IMO The 3 Reasons UNE is moving on:

1. UNE Soph Goalie Billy Girard IV. The Boca Raton, FL native came up big when his team needed him.

2. UNE defensive organization limited Utica's dangerous chances. Utica had some good looks but their shooting was either off the mark or Girard made the Save.

3. Having 2 Weeks Off combined with coming from a weaker Conference. This is where 2 weeks off is maybe too much as besides 2 very competitive Games with Wilkes, Utica was beating teams 12-1, 11-1 etc etc in conference. This is not the greatest prep for the NCAA's. Of course they can do nothing about that but I think it made a small difference.[/SUB]

I will say Utica is a fun team to watch as they definitely "go for it" and the good news is they have a ton of players coming back. I like #36 Zapata and #37 Moncovich's Game as they are two fun players to watch play. Congrats to UNE and good luck moving forward but I feel bad for Utica's Seniors as they work so hard for this moment and the atmosphere at the Game looked fantastic.

Totally agree with this assessment.

Application to NEHC in 3,2,1…?

Does the Adirondack Center have Goal Judges? I ask because Heenan sure was chirping a lot in the direction of where a Goal Judge would be as he was walking-off the ice at the end of the period! If there are indeed Goal Judges, and he/she didn’t light the lamp, more evidence that it wasn’t in.

Interesting how nobody, and I mean *nobody* went-over to shake the hands of the officials after the game.

Cheers!!!

I believe there are goal judges for NCAA tournament games but I could be mistaken.

That's right. The official right on the net waved it off immediately. So was the play whistled dead before the puck crossed the goal line, or was it called off because of a player in the crease?

The puck was certainly over the line, sitting on the ice. I had a very clear view of it.

I was hoping someone close to the net would be on these boards. Even after watching it again and again, I kept thinking it sure looks in.

The ref also blew the whistle. Heck, the puck was still loose. So I wonder exactly what the call was.

From what I was able to see, the ref was in the motion of blowing his whistle, as the goalie was attempting to cover the puck. Therefore the play is dead before the puck was put into the net.

Adrian did not blow the air horn for Hobart’s first goal.

Thought it was a NCAA tournament rule now to either blow it for both teams or not blow it at all?

Geneseo and Babson are scoreless after one. Geneseo leads shots 13-4 and has had the better chances. But they are not completely dominating. No penalties.
