2017 NCAA tournament selection thread

Re: 2017 NCAA tournament selection thread

How is having the top two seeds in a region meeting in the quarterfinals balanced? It simply isn't. If a scenario existed where Norwich was playing the 2nd Eastern team in the quarterfinals, in this case Trinity, you'd find that the current bracket as it exists is a much more palatable option.

I was referring to East/West Balance and nothing else.

Re: 2017 NCAA tournament selection thread

My only beef, and it's minor, is that they're only operating it as separate east/west brackets until the semis. If you're going to do that in the first and quarter rounds, do it in the semis too. Guarantee an Eastern and Western representative in the Championship game.

Do a couple eastern teams deserve a bye? Meh, maybe? That's a tough bracket to build. Norwich practically has a bye, unless they S the bed, the other games could be good. Who the heck knows about endicott?

Despite all my posturing and pseudo-whining, the thing I don't like is the 500 mile rule. Division 1 is awash in in money and they can't afford to donate enough money to the division that has the most athletes and teams to allow national tournaments to be seeded in the same way at the DIII level as it is at the DI level. Probably the revenue from from one day's worth of basketball games would fund all of the DIII championships for a year.

Re: 2017 NCAA tournament selection thread

You should go over to the other site and read the bracketology explained. You'll like that even less than anything I've had to say...

I understand the logic. A lot of what I am saying is more in fun than anything else.

The one thing that I honestly don't like is the way that the 500 mile rule prevents logical bracketing. If, indeed, Norwich, UWSP, SNC, and Trinity are the top four teams in the tournament, give each of them a bye to the quarters. Seed the 8 teams below them in order 5-12. Have 12 play 5 with the winner to go to Trinity. Have 11 play 6 with the winner to go to UWSP. Have 10 play 7 with the winner to go to SNC and have 9 play 8 with the winner to go to Norwich. This would probably entail one or two flights to make it happen, but it's not like the NCAA is running out of money (DIII is strapped for cash, but there's no reason the NCAA can't give more than 3% of its revenue to DIII)

Why are we still whining about the 500 mile rule after 15 years like it's something that can be changed by members of the board? It's a NCAA rule across all of Division III sports. Deal with it.

Gone for a 6 year isolation from this place and nothing has changed. I for one am going to enjoy some post season hockey no matter who goes where.

So after an entire day of "debate" you finally get to this after Webb pointed out the absurdity of giving Norwich a bye? Norwich is playing the lowest seeded team in the tournament and then has a week off. I fail to see where there is a legitimate complaint.

If you go way back the reason the 500 mile rule exists is because before it did schools who had to fly would pay their own way to fly in a championship as a tradeoff for increased tournament access. Rule was created so schools wouldn't be stuck with the bill for a flight to play one game. Paying for a flight for some schools could be burdensome. This is the trade-off and not a bad one at that. If you don't like it, take it up with the Division III Management Council. I'm sure they'd be happy to educate you further. Unless of course you have no interest in understanding how most of this works.

A week off??? What are you looking at?

Dude what's your deal? People have said multiple times we aren't griping about Norwich playing effing Salem State. It's the process that sucks. Imagine a D3 bracket where everyone was a tough opponent with no 'freebies' (I don't view anyone as an automatic win but apparently this board does)...it would be a flawed system to neglect a bye to the top seeded team. Back up the 500 mile rule all you want..and believe it or not..we understand it!! I know that may be hard to comprehend but we are purely saying we don't agree with it. Does that change it...no...but last I checked forums were a place to throw different ideas around and trolls like you just smash everyone that has a different opinion than yourself.

Go troll somewhere else nubs.

Who's trolling? I'm just amused by your hypocrisy. When the top western teams cannibalized each other to send one team out east no one east of Lake Erie was in here complaining about how unfair it was. It all depends on whose ox is getting gored.

I totally agree there. And of course other fans aren't going to be as vocal about it but I have always felt someone gets fleeced every year in this system. By no means am I saying this is the first time it happened or that it is even the worst.

Re: 2017 NCAA tournament selection thread

The thing is, people get fleeced in any system where the seeding is subjective - which is every NCAA tournament as far as I'm aware. Whether we're talking about the billion-dollar business of DI football or cash-strapped DIII hockey, someone always feels like they're getting hosed.

I was watching Mike & Mike this morning when they talked about how Monmouth got screwed in their conference basketball tournament. As the #1 seed they had to play a true road game at tournament host #4 seed Sienna simply because Sienna sells more tickets. And Monmouth lost. That puts into perspective the minor complaints we have about seeding and the system, which while perhaps irksome are rational and logical. I believe that generally speaking most people involved in DIII athletics have the best interests of the student-athletes, the schools, and their respective sports in mind. We should be thankful we don't have to deal with the blatant corruption and hypocrisy that is DI.

Re: 2017 NCAA tournament selection thread

Actually it was. Norwich follows a path of playing 8 East and 4 East to get to Utica, just like any tournament format would set up that is seeded. Nowhere in NCAA handbook does it say a 1 seed gets a bye. This year's tournament bracket is one of best ever as far as matching people against the corresponding seed in the early rounds. The committee did a great job.

Nowhere does it say "seed each region separately" either.
