2017 NCAA tournament selection thread

Re: 2017 NCAA tournament selection thread

I was going to ask if that would still be true with Utica losing and Trinity having a win and a loss.

I forgot about Trinity winning yesterday. Trinity would have it by a nose. That makes it a little tougher for Utica, doesn't it? Utica 18-9-0. Trin-Trin would be 17-7-3

Utica 0.6667
Trin-Trin 0.6852

That's close.

basically a half game difference !

Re: 2017 NCAA tournament selection thread

Are two of those wins against D-II teams? The D-3 record is currently 15-6-3. So a loss would make it 15-7-3 for 0.660?????

Doesn't matter now, but one of the wins was against Post. The other was that game that I forgot about with their win against Bill yesterday.

Re: 2017 NCAA tournament selection thread

My Take - your mileage may vary

So we now have Pool A

Endicott
Salem State
Augsburg
St. Norbert
Norwich
Trinity
Plattsburgh

Pool B- Stevens Point or Hobart

Pool C

Hobart or Stevens Point
Oswego
Adrian
Hamilton

My guess at the Seeds

East
1. Norwich
2. Endicott
3. Hobart
4. Oswego
5. Trinity
6. Hamilton
7. Plattsburgh
8. Salem

West

1. SNC
2. UWSP
3. Adrian
4. Augsburg

Quarterfinal Hosts

Norwich, Endicott, Hobart, SNC

Oswego at Adrian ---> Hobart
Augsburg at UWSP ---> SNC
Salem at Trinity ---> Endicott
Plattsburgh at Hamilton --> Norwich

Semi final Groupings
Norwich triad vs. Hobart Triad
SNC triad vs. Endicot Triad

Wild guesses, because Hamilton/Trinity/Plattsburgh could be shuffled.

Don't be surprised to see all four western teams get byes into the quarterfinals. Might not happen but could very well happen.

Assuming Hamilton wins today, is there any history that you know of to suspect that the committee might favor Utica over Trinity in an effort to boost (early) FF ticket sales?

Yes.

Remember the year Elmira was preselected as a neutral site host in their downtown arena?

That year Elmira got an at-large bid when everyone thought they had no chance. It was very, very surprising. Very.

Elmira did end up making it to the semifinal round, but still...

That's what I was driving at.. As in: to what extent -if any- prospective attendance might skew the selections.

Past results don't guarantee anything, and Utica is completely moot at this point, but thanks for the interesting historical reference.

I think that is possible, but unlikely. Mostly because Norwich will be the national #1 seed, and the pairing that I show meet the avoid all flights rule, while maintaining bracket integrity.

#1 Avoid Flights (check)
#2 Maintain bracket integrity (check)

4 byes to the West
#1 Avoid Flights (check)
#2 Maintain bracket integrity (not so much)

With comparisons that would have been as close as they would have been between a losing Trinity and Utica, that could have tilted the decision. I kind of think Utica would have gotten in anyway, but we will never know. Now, if Utica somehow still gets in, then I would call shenanigans.

Considering Elmira was 11-1 in last 12 games entering NCAAs and won ECACW Tournament it wasn't all that surprising.

You may be confused with 2007 when national committee flipped Superior and Stout when Superior was hosting and Superior didn't get in while Stout probably would have. That was way worse than 2006.

No. I specifically was referring to the Elmira year. No confsion on my part at all.

However, you do point out another example.

Re: 2017 NCAA tournament selection thread

I miss the days prior to the Monday selection show when you would wait up sometimes to all hours of Sunday night to get the results from the smoke filled room. It was a lot of fun and the banter would continue all evening and into the night on the forum. It was a great time.

The old AOL group chat room and d3west's cover it live were pretty great too.
