I wonder how much weight you could put into Russia and Finland playing all their other games on Olympic sheet where the USA, Canada, Denmark, Sweden faced Russia or Finland after switching from hybrid to Olympic. If this game ends the way it does, every winner in the medal round will have been the team that played on the same surface in their previous game (also happen to be higher seed or host nation).

Was thinking the same thing. It's a real problem with these tournaments. Affected the US a few times at the World Championships too.

Wasn't the reason the USA lost last year. Toronto and Montreal have the same size rink. Didn't Malmo have the same sized rink in both of them?

It's an issue beyond rink size actually (though the rink size issue in Helsinki magnifies this). You have one team who has played 5 games in the same arena, using the same boards, same glass, same locker room etc. versus a team who's playing in a new arena with new boards, new glass, new locker room etc. It's not reason the US lost but it is a factor and definitely merits discussion.

Remember when maybe a shroeder would be an under aged kid, now we have entire lines being year+ younger
You can't tell me we don't have any 96 D better than some of the 97's who just stand there and watch the Russians hack away
I hope USA wins and can't stomach the russians(love watching their skill and composure) but it has to be s team loaded with 96's and maybe a 97 or 2, maybe

How many underagers were on the US because Russia had 7 (6 '97s and 1 '98)?

I think the USA did fine. A 2-1 loss to Russia in the Semis after beating Canada in the prelims? Most people would have taken that in a heartbeat before the tournament started.

Was it Werenski who allowed the Russian to basically walk right around him for the game winning goal? Tough outcome to have your best defenseman look so pedestrian in such a crucial moment.

He's not the first to make that mistake.

2013 World Championships was the worst. US beats Russia 8-3 in the quarters after playing 8 games in Helsinki and had two days to travel to Stockholm to play the Swiss, who played every game in Stockholm, in the semis (was even worse for Finland who had to play Sweden).

After watching him play the last two seasons, that action is far, far, far from surprising. We see that all the time here in Michigan. Great scorer, terrible defensman.

reading comprehension is your friend. He's talking about these kinds of tournaments, specifically focusing on the 2016 WJC and World Championships (as he states in the 2nd sentence). The whole rink situation is difficult, being such a compressed schedule, sticking to familiarity can be huge. I assume that is also why it was setup the way it was with each #1 and #2 seed getting to stay in their rink, but since both of today's games were in one arena, you couldn't give #1 Sweden the same advantage...

That goal was in the goalie not him, he pushed him wide
A mite would have saved that
The bad d goal was they tying goal where 25 stood there for ten seconds and key them hack away until it went in
Either sticks up or all on their butt
That was the key mistake

He drove him wide but then allowed him to come under and get to the slot. A good D would have pushed him wide and kept him there...and kept his speed and spacing to ensure that the Russian forward was not able to get around him and to the front of the net. Yes, the goalie should have hugged the post better, but even still, better defensive play and then Russian forward is checked hard into the boards long before he gets around Werenski and to the slot.

First off it was a Russian Dman not forward. Hug the post better? That was a brutal goal to let in and 9 times out of 10 it is a non issue and dead play
Soft brutal goal
That one is on the goalie
The tying goal was a sh$$ show in front of the net and not his fault

Great group of players and kids, they did their best+
Just don't ruin chance to win by being obsessed with a farce, waste of money program
Russia goes to win, USA to win but while promoting natl kids for draft
It's a conflict for them to be involved picking the team
Let the staff pick their players, as Herb said, "that just isn't happening"

Some of the players at the camps over others were laughable

You tell me Tuch coukdnt have helped?

Considering Tuch is struggling this season, I don't think he would have helped.
There are "deserving" kids left off every year and it's easy to second guess when they don't win.

Just watched the highlights.

You have an interesting interpretation.

As a very former D man, I would not call standing still and poking his stick in the Ruskie's general direction as "pushing him wide". As we've seen before, a lot, he put no real effort into preventing a player a nice clean chance at the net. Regardless of the goalie- the chance should never have had happen. It's not as if the player came out of nowhere- he skated in from the blueline. Geez- Zack picked him up just below the face off dot, and SHOULD have easily pushed him into the boards. Easy. Plenty of time and space to do something so simple.

Instead, well, couple of strides, poke of a stick, and that was all the effort he did.

For a player of such high regard, this kind of play is getting really old. We see this WAY, WAY to often.

6'4" 220 lb first rd NHL draft pick with 13 points so far, 8 in his last 8, +12 and playing D1 past two seasons, very solid last year, could have helped
Nothing to do with hindsight. Said it from day one

But hey, like our town u-6 soccer coach says, "it's not about winning"!!
