2016 MLB Season - Curses, foiled again?

No one's saying he didn't do a good job of course.

I'm sure he's helped by his younger guys being on early contracts and not being FA eligible. Which would explain the overall payroll. But the did drop 180 mil on 1 player. So, he isn't some pauper.

180 million on the right player will pay dividends. Paying 217 million for "sizzle" will kill you.

Yeah, I'm not thinking he gets to keep Bryant at the $650,000/year or whatever they're paying him now.

We'll see a few stories like this in the coming days

Many not in-tune with just how long 108 years is in the sports world, can refer to the ineffable joy of Cubs fans finally released Thursday morning after being bottled up for generations. One story epitomizes what exactly this win means for Chicago fans, even those who aren’t even still walking this Earth.

Wayne Williams got in his car Wednesday and drove back home from North Carolina to Indiana to keep a decades-old promise to his late father.

“The gate was open,” he says as he drives in. He’s not at the ballpark. He’s watching it with his dad. “Got a W flag. Not supposed to fly until after the actual win,” Williams said, going over his supplies. His dad, also named Wayne Williams, was waiting for him.

“I talked it out with my boys forever. I let them know that I told my dad – we had a pact. When the Cubs – not if, when – the Cubs got into the World Series, we would make sure we listen to the games together,” Williams said. Look, dad, here’s your son, keeping his part of the bargain.

Williams set up camp in the military section of Greenwood Forest Lawn Cemetery after an all-day drive from North Carolina.

Bartender last night said that it wasn't $100 cover charge for bars in Chi-town anymore for last night's game. It was $250.

Last weekend (I was in Chi) I heard of bars charging 250 to get in and another 500 for a table.

I was staying only a couple miles north of Wrigley, and it seemed pretty normal, though, so it might have been just exaggeration. .

Just look across the lake to Detroit to see that money can't automatically win titles. Got to a couple Series, had some fun runs, but quite a few duds, too. "The greatest offense since the 27 Yankees " finished last.

If only he drafted stiffs like other teams do...

The Cubs have two players making over $20M (Lester and Heywood) and five others in double digits. He built through the farm and took other team's castoffs (a 20-25 5.48 ERA Jake Arrieta for instance).

I'm also betting the Cubs can keep paying Bryant whatever they like since he's still on his rookie deal and won't be free agent eligible until 2022.

Is this a new thing, or is it baseball only or what? A friend and I went to The Fours (a block from the Garden) during game six of the Stanley Cup Finals and didn't pay a dime.

It was the Cubs. In a World Series.

That's all you need to know.

Think of Toronto being in the Stanley Cup...that MIGHT come close to being a comparison.

Remember: stainless steel did not exist the last time the Cubs won the title.

If the Vikings ever again make it to a SB my head might splode.
