Not being snarky, but do people really see Holy Cross and St. Anselm as "non-D3" schools when it comes to hockey. Is there a reason, beyond the fact that the other sports at those schools are not D3 and the NCAA will not allow it, that they should not be allowed to officially compete at D3? I'm fairly familiar with both schools but wondered if there is an unfair advantage they have over true D3 schools.
Their financial aid and athletics departments won't have the department-wide oversight from the DIII compliance people? They also wouldn't be able to apply the same procedure of comparing ratios to declare a grant a "de facto athletic scholarship". That's my best guess.
Plus, what about multi-sport athletes? Some schools (Beaney-era Middlebury and Elmira come to mind) have crossover between hockey coaches and other sports. Imagine a prospective Student-Athlete recruited and offered a scholarship by the golf/tennis coach, who also happens to be the hockey coach, and then participates as a "walk-on" on the hockey team?
NB: I want these programs to be allowed to compete, I'm just playing devil's advocate here.
