2016 Laura Hurd Discussion

Re: 2016 Laura Hurd Discussion

For the record: I'm not crying. Greeneway is a fantastic player whose accomplishments deserve accolades. She deserves an award for her career, I simply disagree with the decision regarding her status THIS year. I agree with Remy in that, if a Career Achievement award existed, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Besides, I know most of the players aren't terribly concerned about all of this right now. The awards they care about get handed out on Saturday, not Thursday. :)

You're both cryin' like babies and you're embarrassing yourselves and looking very petty to say the least.

I'll just say it again - maybe Plattsburgh is just by far the best team but doesn't have the best player in the country. Its much easier to score lots of goals against good and bad teams when you're playing with lots of other good players on the best team in the country (by far).

What I don't understand is why St. Anselm players are eligible for these awards. They are a D2 school - they observe different practice times (start dates, etc.) and are eligible for the NCAA Division 1 tourney - doesn't seem right to me.

.

Very true. Brianne McLaughlin makes the Olympic team that goes to Vancouver after playing on a Robert Morris squad that never even qualified for the NCAA's in the 4 years she was there. Speaking of goalies, and I'm playing devil's advocate here...the award is for PLAYER of the year, not top scorer of the year. Otherwise, how does the goalie from Plattsburgh win the award 2 years ago?

I'm pretty sure she was by far the best player of the year that year and a senior right? It doesn't go to goalies or defenseman often. Just like 98.9% of the time the NFL MVPis a quarterback.

It wasn't the first time, but okay? You're still a "player" if you're a goalie.......last I check a "cheerleader" or a food service worker isn't stopping pucks....

But you're right, all of the other past Hurd winners played on mediocore teams too. That Elmira team last season..I mean come on, with out Ryan...they wouldn't have had a chance...oh wait, they just made the NCAA Final Four again. Aveson the year before that, nope Plattsburgh wouldn't stand a chance. Fortier for Norwich...Yup still made the NCAA's the next year.

Is Plattsburgh the best "team", probably. They're the best team because they have the best players. You can't penalize a player because she's on a good team. They haven't any other Laura Hurd year (with the exception of maybe Wasserman back in 2003. Which, until this wonderful year, was the ONLY time a Player of the "Career" award went to a team NOT to make the NCAA Tournament.

Again, for the thick skulled here, if this was a "CAREER" award I'd have absolutely no issue giving it to her. But the fact that Greenway did not put up as many points in general, and did not put up as many points against the best competition (remember the certain poster who claimed Plattsburgh girls only put up points against slop and cupcakes).

She was hurt, so wasn't Meneghin and Sheeran who were both carted off. She didn't play as many games against ranked teams, false she played the same. Maybe if she played against more ranked teams she could have more points against ranked teams...false, see previous point. She scored a lot against ranked teams, of which came against the last ranked team St.Norbert. Plattsburgh did just fine with out them....with out Meneghin and Sheeran, they don't beat Elmira and probably a few other teams. They beat a 9 win Potsdam team with out them (big deal). She doesn't have anyone good around her...great players make those around them great too. She's always watched, a marked player when on the ice. Yea I'm sure they just let Sheeran and Meneghin skate around the ice at free will too... Did I miss any more of the excuses?

Hold on...let me call the Waaaahhhhhmbulance.

At the end of the regular season Sheeran had 43 points, Menghin had 45, Greenway had 46. As of her last game greenway had 47, Sheeran 45, Meneghin 47. Before they padded their stats against the NESCAC cupcakes. :D

Re: 2016 Laura Hurd Discussion

You're both cryin' like babies and you're embarrassing yourselves and looking very petty to say the least.

I can't speak for Remy, but in term of my own statements, I would like to make the following points:

1. You realize it's possible to disagree with a decision regarding an award recipient, right? That's called an "opinion". And everybody is entitled to have their own.

2. You realize it is possible to express an opinion without automatically "cryin' like a baby", right? Because that's all I did.

3. You realize that is possible to express difference of opinion regarding the recipient of an award without dismissing, disrespecting, or diminishing the accomplishment of the actual recipient that put them in consideration for the award, right? Because I'm pretty sure I went out of my way to acknowledge and show respect towards Greeneway's accomplishments. Seems like something that somebody who is, as you described me, "petty" would not do.

So let me just say this again, so nobody else gets confused: Congratulations to Michelle Greeneway, who was named the 2016 recipient of the Laura Hurd Award at the DIII Women's Ice Hockey Player of the Year. I may personally disagree with the decision regarding the award, but that does not change that she was chosen because of a number of accomplishments on the ice that do deserve recognition and appreciation. One only scores 100 goals in 4 years of play with a large amount of off-ice work to improve their game.

Do you think before you press send? Do we need to really talk about padding stats? Cupcakes? LoL Oh that's right, Greenway only managed a point against the NESCAC Cupcakes. Yes Greenway scored 46 points...most of which came against "cupcakes"....making my point that much easier thanks...

i don't think you are being bad. Your buddy on the other hand is tearing down the player that won....I know Plattsburgh fans aren't used to not having things go their way but give it a rest. I can honestly say that if Menaghin won I wouldn't be whining about it. The fact is that greenway, sheerhan, Menghin, Kinsel etc are all high quality players and I have little doubt Menwghin or Sheerhan will get their due.

And those points the Plattsburgh ladies had against the ECAC west teams weren't against cupcakes? Heck sheerhan had 11 of her points against Neumann and Chatham. Meneghin had 14
Greenway had 1 point in 1 game.

Dude you're dense in the head seriously. Go back...reread everything. Plattsburgh, who A plays the 2nd toughest schedule compared to Lake Forest (11) for starters. B. I've shown you the stats what the players did against who. If you can't comprehend that, then I truly feel sorry for you.

And no, I am not "tearing" down a player. If you, her, or any one of your little rosey princess puffer friends can't handle factual stats then you probably should go move to a secluded island so you don't get offended.

I've said it over and over just as Nate did. What Greenway did as a CAREER deserves to be acknowledged. She was a great asset to Lake Forest and Women's hockey. If you want to say she was the best "career" player of the year, that's 100% fine and probably accurate. Saying she was the best player when she did not have the stats, overall and or against the tougher competition (you know, your whole cupcake thing), is the only argument anyone is trying to make. It doesn't take away what she did, it was admirable. If her feelings are hurt, sorry but lol like I said, I have less of an issue of who it was given to then I do why. If we want to call it a career award, fine, but it's not a Player Of The Year. To that it's somewhat embarrassing (especially when Menaghin doesn't even get runner up lol)

And Sheeran and Menaghin both averaged nearly 1.5 and almost 3 points vs. Ranked teams. Greenway...not so much.

Your completely right. Jeez. I was so mistaken. Thank you for showing me the light. I wish Lake Forest had the opportunity to play Neumann and Chatham and William Smith and Potsdam and Oswego so that they could show how good they really are.

Greenway was also an outstanding student, don't forget that. Did any of you see her accomplishments in that? I think she was an academic all american. Considering this is DIII and not D1, I would think that academics would (and SHOULD) also weigh into the greatness of a player. For her to be as good as she is - top in goals, top in GAME WINNING GOALS (seems like a pretty important stat to me) - and still be great in the classroom at a very good academic school, really says something about her as a person, too. Anyone can be a good hockey player if that's all they focus on, but the fact that she has the academic accolades to go along with her hockey talent? That's impressive and very worth of Player of the Year!

Again, not to take away from Greeneway's achievements, but rather merely to play devil's advocate: Firstly, academics aren't a part of this. That's what the Elite 90 Award was for. Second, if Academics did factor in, Giovanna Senese should have won in a heartbeat, with thay 3.98 GPA while dual-majoring in Physics and Mathematics... And I have total respect for both players in that regard.

Re: 2016 Laura Hurd Discussion

The Elite 90 is only for players involved in the Final Four, not the regular season, playoffs or first round NCAA's.

Some interesting things about this award and the 17 X it has been handed out (renamed after Laura Hurd in 2007) are that for SURE, 3 X it has gone to the hockey player who also lead the nation in (g/a), 12 X for SURE it has NOT (to be fair, 2 of those years goalies won, and 1 year it was won by a D.) 2000 and 2015 I'm not positive about. Only once has a non-Sr. won it (2008..and she did not lead the nation in scoring that year).
