Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Can't beat these goalies straight on. It's going to need a one timer off a cross ice pass or a wicked deflection.

Or a juicy rebound.

Could we see BOTH Medal games with no goals until a shootout. ? Who would have thunk that after yesterdays goal fests.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Monique Lamoureux in the sin bin for the second straight time. Canada starts OT on a power play for 1:53. So it will be 4-on-3 to start.

Shots are 25-23 Canada.

20-minute golden goal overtime.

HATE the idea of a world championship being decided by a shootout.
(unless the U.S. wins it, of course)

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

If Poulin slap passes back across, the other forward has a wide open net.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Carpenter on a rebound. USA 1 CAN 0

from Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson and Megan Bozek.

Rigsby with the 32-save shutout; Maschmeyer with 33 saves.

Stat of the night is probably that Canada was 0-for-6 on the power play, including 0-for-2 in overtime.

Especially so given that they were 4 on 3's. The Canadians certainly had plenty of chances. Perhaps others will disagree, but I thought the last two penalty calls were pretty weak. It looked like Spooner (deftly) grabbed Stecklein's stick, and it seemed like J. Lam took a bit of a dive to get that call at the end also. Both players made it look good, at least good enough to get the call.

On the game winner, Jocelyn made a great athletic deflection on Bozek's shot from the point, which Maschmeyer somehow stopped, but couldn't cover. Alex Carpenter was right there, in the right spot at the right time, to put the loose puck home from the crease.

A tremendously exciting and well played hockey game that just happened to go the USA's way.

Yeah, given two outstanding teams, two outstanding goaltending performances and an outstanding game which is the norm between these two teams I would say the story of the game was Canada's anemic power play and not even so much that they didn't score on one of them but that they often lacked flow and they struggled to even get more than one shot on net from a set up. It seemed to improve in overtime but then there were fewer skaters/more ice then too.

A bit surprised and glad that Canada didn't lose their legs in the 3rd and in OT after that barn burner last night against Finland. The Kamloops Fire Department is still monitoring the rubble.

I thought the US did a great job in front of keeping Canada from getting possession puck/control in close thereby limiting any chance of a goal against.

Was hoping whoever scored that it was going to be a nice play and a clean shot but, c'est la vie.

Apparently standing room only!

Curious, did the US viewers get the Canadian TSN feed with Rod Black and Cheryl Pounder doing the play by play and colour commentating and Tessa Bonhomme anchoring the broadcast with between period appearances by Carla McLeod or was it an all US cast performing those functions?

And who was the first US player to get her medal...she didn't dress for the game?

This game should add to the women's game's capital...tremendous game!

Yeah, I was wondering about those two calls as well. It did look like JLam had just quietly left the 3 meter board and in the replay it looked like Spooner was making no effort to extricate Stecklien's stick from under her arm, so, I agree.

And the winning goal, after the bounce, hit the post and ended up behind Maschmeyer in the crease awaiting Carpenter's assistance.

Yes we did. I was a bit worried at first since they seemed to be homers but thought they got better. Certainly better than the colour commentator at the NCAA final who couldn't see past her BC bias to see the game

Agreed, too bad they put it on in the middle of the night, on a Monday, against some stupid basketball game in the US. Nice job by the IIHF to bury a classic great game.

I agree about the game time vs NCAA BB but a Classic Game? It was 0-0, sort of like a soccer match. Not really great for marketing.

Did you watch it? It may not have had goals but that didn't take away from the skill, passing and speed on display last night.

What a hockey game.

Agree with Prez and BlackBeard. Fantastic game to watch. The skill and speed were tremendous. The fact that with all that firepower on the ice you ended up with a 1-0 game well into OT, speaks volumes on how far this game has come. The depth and systems have improved so much over the years. The goal tending was simply fantastic.... The US did a very good job limiting shooting lanes, rebounds and limited crease presence. Certainly keys to their victory and killing of all those penalties. Ironically it was a player kind of left alone near the crease at the other end that led to the winning goal. It was a great deflection by the Lam Twin in front to get the puck by Maschmeyer, and Carpenter was there pretty much unmolested to find the loose puck and put it home.

Congrats to the US for yet another close win. Kudos to the Canuck team and players. They can be proud on how they played in front of a great home team crowd. They sure got their money's worth.

So, you didn't watch the game did you. It was nothing like a soccer match. It was like two great boxers exchanging punches, neither giving an inch, neither able to find a way to get past the defenses and score a knock down. Perhaps the best MLB WS game seven ever ended 1-0 in 10 innings and NOBODY said "well, that was just like soccer!"

Agree. Score could have been about 5-4 if not for the fact that the two stars were the two goalies.
