2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

The Czech's have a very young team, they have 12 1995 or younger players. For comparison, the US has 1 and Canada 2.

Yeah, I should have added that at least for the first half of the game the play was pretty even and that the Czechs' could look like they belong in the same game as the Finns I thought was pretty impressive.

You couldn't help thinking that there could be a promising team here. Their offence just had no zip.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Speaking of the 2018 Winter Games, several teams have enough points in the world rankings to punch their tickets to PyeongChang.

Press release from the IIHF: Olympic participants known

Still find it bizarre that they determine this order so far in advance. IMHO should really be based on the rankings after the completion of the 2016-2017 season. You can still have your qualification rounds for the last spot or two in the fall of 2017.

Too me this game was a stark reminder that there are still clearly three echelons even in the top tier. US and Canada clearly one and two, as they both severly outplayed the Fins and Russians. Finland and Russia clearly ahead of the rest of the pack based on the results of the quarters. To me the Fins were much faster and much more skilled than the Czech team in the quarterfinal. Both the shot count and final score was a fair reflection of the play.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

What has happened to the Swiss and, especially, the Swedes?

The Swedes have really struggled at this tournament the last few years. They have not finished in the top four in quite a few years. In 2013 they narrowly escaped from relegation.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Blow out in the works...US 5 - Russia 0 after one.

Prugova chased after 4 goals.

Very nice individual effort by JLam for the 2nd US goal but it never should have gone in...terrible goaltending.

And two others were off the Russian defensemen...when things go wrong they can really go wrong.

O contest for the US. This game may not be doing them any favours.

5th Place Game - FINAL - Sweden 4, Czech Republic 2

The Czechs took a 2-0 lead in the first period on a pair of goals by Alena Polenska, and held that lead halfway through the third period. But Sweden came back with 3 tallies in a span of 2:05 by Erica Uden Johansson, Anna Borgqvist, and Lisa Johansson. Sabina Lambertz Kuller added a shorthanded empty-net goal for the final result.

Shots were 22-20 Sweden.

Finland 1 - Canada 1 after one.

Furious pace in the first...Canada swarmed all over Finland for the first 7 minutes but then the Fins converted a 2 on 1 on their second shot on goal to Labonte's 4 hole.

Canada tied it up later on a pp and Johnston went bar up late in the period.

This pace can't continue for two more periods.

Good sized crowd but a lot more empty seats than I would have imagined.

Finland 1 - Canada 2 after two on a pp goal by Agosta who finally scores her first goal of the tournament late in the period.

Agosta and Jenner each failing to convert on breakaways earlier in the period.

Frantic pace, tremendous game.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

FINAL: Canada 5, Finland 3

Only looking at the stats, it appears that it was a wild final 10 minutes. After Natalie Spooner scored her 2nd goal of the game, lighting the lamp shorthanded with 14:22 to play, Finland pulled goaltender Meeri Raisanen on 5 separate occasions, four times while they were also on the power play. It worked once with Michelle Karvinen cutting the lead to 3-2, but the third and fourth attempts didn't go so well as Blayre Turnbull hit the empty net to make it 4-2 and Spooner completed her hat trick to extend the lead to 5-2. Saila Saari clawed one back for Finland late.

Spooner had a 4-point night, getting an assist on the 2nd Canadian goal. Marie-Philip Poulin had 3 assists.

It was a an entertaining game to watch. After both Agosta and Jenner failed to score on their breakaways, Spooner scored a beauty going in full speed moving from forehand to backhand and lifting it over the pad into the net.

Scary moment for the Fins when there was a close to knee on knee collision between Karvinen and Wakefield. Karvinen came back to score on the PP a little while later.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

An absolute barn burner!!

Tremendous game by Finland and Raisanen in particular.

Down 3-1 Finland pulled Raisanen with 8:38 left in the game to go on a 6 on 4 on the power play but to no avail.

Canada got another penalty shortly afterward and again Finland went on a 6 on 4 with an empty net...with the move paying off this time...3-2 Canada.

Then Jenner skated too close to Raisanen in an attempt to go around her, their skates made contact and both of them went flying with Jenner continuing to the box. It looked like the wheels might be coming off for Canada...(another 6 on 4). But right off a face off deep in Canada's end Turnbull fired it from the top of the face off circle into the empty net. 4-2 Canada.

With a couple minutes left Finland pulled Raisanen for he extra attacker but Spooner got the puck in the neutral zone and bagged a wrist shot from there to make it 5-2 Canada.

Then with seconds left in the game and Finland's not letting up Labonte got fooled on a bit of a strange one that got in under her pad shot from the far side of the face off circle.

In what was pretty much a penalty free game until about half way through the third things started to change rapidly...dumb, unnecessary penalty by Wakefield late in the game away from the play to potentially open the door for the Fins to let them back in the game...and the miscue by Jenner.

On the two unsuccessful breakaways earlier in the game I thought to myself "too bad that wasn't Spooner on those breakaways" then she got one while Canada was short handed in the third and bagged it. I don't think I've watched any female player as successful on breakaways as Spooner. She's off the charts.

Full marks and then some to the Fins...tremendous effort right to the final buzzer. Love their coach for the 6 on 4's and his decision to continue with it even after Canada scored on the third one. It was the right decision with only two or three minutes left in the game.

As the wheels looked to be loosening up for Canada I thought that I wouldn't mind if Finland were to win if they were to play the same way against the US tomorrow...it would have been a great game.

The Fins were top 3 tonight...Wow! Just a little less firepower but not enough to put them out of contention.

An absolute barn burner!!

And another stellar job of anchoring the broadcast by Tessa Bonhomme.

OSU was well represented in more than one way tonight.

(Forgot to mention Saulnier was on fire for the first half of the game...I think she burnt herself out for the second half. And Hiirikoski was everywhere on the ice for Finland).
