2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Well, this adds a little intrigue...

FINAL: Czech Republic 3, Japan 2, Shootout - CZE wins shootout 3-2 in 7 rounds

Klara Hymlarova scored all three Czech shootout goals (reminder - international rules allow repeat shooters after the first three) to give them the win over Japan and improve their chances of advancing to the quarterfinals.

Japanese captain Chiho Osawa gave her team an opening 1-0 lead with a power play goal, but the Czechs tied it in the second when Alena Polenska scored and then took the lead in the third on a goal by Aneta Tejralova. But Mika Hori tied the game for Japan with 10:03 remaining in regulation. Shots on goal through overtime were 32-28 in favor of the Czech Republic.

Less intrigue. Sweden has advanced. If Switzerland wins in regulation they move on, if not the Czechs move on. The Czechs must REALLY be kicking themselves about that goal allowed to Sweden with 8 seconds remaining.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

If you don't want intrigue, you just need to look at today's USA game.

FINAL: USA 8, Russia 0 - After 3 goals in the first, the Americans erupted for 5 more in the third period. Hilary Knight and Monique Lamoureux each lit the lamp twice and Kendall Coyne added a goal and two assists. Megan Keller, Shiann Darkangelo, and Anne Pankowski also scored. Nicole Hensley made 16 saves for the shutout. Shots were 39-16.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

And Switzerland is up 1-0 on Sweden in the 2nd period. Live stats here.

FINAL: Sweden 2, Switzerland 1, shootout - SWE wins shootout 1-0 in 3 rounds

The Czech Republic advances to the quarterfinals and will face the loser of tonight's Canada-Finland game. Sweden wins Group B and will play Russia in tomorrow's other quarterfinal game. Switzerland drops into the best-of-3 relegation series against Japan.

After Evelina Raselli's first-period goal for the Swiss, Sweden tied it with a power-play marker from Lisa Johansson late in the second period. With the score tied but knowing they needed a regulation win to advance, the Swiss pulled goaltender Florence Schelling with 1:11 remaining, but they could not find the gamewinner. The contest went to an overtime and a shootout, and Anna Borgqvist netted the only goal as the second Swedish shooter.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Canada 5 - Finland 1 after two.

Some nice goals...Finland's right in front all alone off the face off on a PP wit Poulin uncharacteristically in the box.

Watchorn ran into Agosta near the end of the period. Looks serious...Agosta had to be carried to the dressing room.

TSN stacking the talent deck with Carla McLeod (related to Maurice "The Rocket" Richard) sitting in with Tessa Bonhomme between the first and second periods...wonder if she's still coaching Japan and hence her presence in Kamloops?

And they're already running commercials for the World Junior Championship Tournament in December!!

6-1 final. More importantly, Agosta came back to play in the Third.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Canada 6 - Finland 1 Final.

Good news is Agosta was on the ice to start the third period.

Johnston, Wakefield and Jenner are racking up the points...impressive web site with lots of stats and charts...

And the Canadian "Entry" list has Potomak playing for UMD...we'll take her! It listed Kelly Terry as well. Hard to imagine them not making the team, Terry's the women's hockey version of Aaron Pryor.

You want fair - how about a 37 year old forward still hanging on!

she is the best third line player ever and played very strong against USA in he first game
it was very funny to see her protege, iya gavrilova, of russia, scoring the first goal against canada

so glad the canada coach broke up johnston and poulin this tournament
these two have zero chemistry together...this is like a gorilla and fly type pairing...johnston is so much better off playing with jenner...so good move
Agosta has yet to score her first goal...and she is canada's best

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

team canada women's plays are so telegraphed
no wonder the usa coach knows where to poke holes in their game

need better coaching

You support Wick being on the team and then criticize the coaching. The US is a better team and they give their young NCAA stars a chance to play. That's the difference. There are no players that are hanging on. It will not happen. Canada is now well anchored as the #2 as a result of this philosophy.

But when it comes to the Olympic Gold Medal game, they find a way to win.

`

You heard it here first, Team USA will win this year as they have the best coaching. NHL playing experience versus dismissed NCAA coach ????? Go figure.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Relegation series, Game 1 (best of 3)...

Switzerland 3, Japan 1 - Yurie Adachi scored for Japan just 1:49 into the game, but the Swiss responded with the next 3 goals, including going 2-for-6 on the power play. Anja Stiefel tied the game with a PP marker at 6:59 of the 1st, Christine Huni put the Swiss ahead before the first intermission, and Lara Stalder added an power-play insurance goal in the 2nd. Shots were 27-15 Switzerland. Japan went 0-for-5 on their power play.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

Quarterfinal - Russia 4, Sweden 1

Olga Sosina contributed on all four Russian goals, scoring two herself and assisting on the other two. Johanna Olofsson scored the lone Swedish goal on the power play, but that was their only power-play tally on 6 opportunities.

Nadezhda Morozova made 26 saves in net for Russia as they were outshot 27-26.

Russia advances to Sunday's first semifinal against the U.S. Game time is 3 pm PT / 6 pm ET / 5 pm CT.

Re: 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship
